“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Shri Navchetan Andhjan Mandal was established on October 31, 1976 with an aim to provide help and support to the mentally retarded, visually impaired, hearing impaired and the orthopedically handicapped children in the field of education, medical care, vocational training, rehabilitation and employment generation.We educate the disabled children for their optimal development and provide professional and vocational training with the aim to enable them to earn a livelihood. We have started a separate primary school for boys and girls and a co-educational secondary school. In these schools, about 560 challenged as well as a few normal children study together. We also support students attending higher secondary school. I.T.C. and college. An industrial training institute was established in 2004 for teaching two trades viz. tailoring and computer operation. The organization has hostel facilities for 240 boys and 160 girls, three physiotherapy centres, library (Braille and normal) and a computerised Braille press. We have an old age home for the visually impaired and normal man and woman at Bhachau. All the above facilitates and services are provided free of cost to the disabled.We have received National and State awards for providing quality services to the "Divyang" persons.

Visit Date: 29th March 2024Visited by: Atreyi Bhanja, Associate, Give Grants Team During a field visit to Shri Navchetan Andhjan Mandal, our team assessed the current condition of the facility that has served as a home for blind elderly for over four decades. The primary purpose of our visit was to evaluate the structural integrity of the home and to understand the living conditions of the residents. It is clear from our observations that while the home has been well managed and the residents are cared for, the physical structure of the building has deteriorated significantly over the years. Several areas of the home, including the ceiling and walls, show severe signs of wear and pose a safety risk to its inhabitants. With the funds obtained from the campaign, the final stages of construction of the new home are almost complete. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that the new facility is not only functional but also welcoming. The staff quarters have already been completed and handed over, with staff and their families currently residing there. This step indicates significant progress towards the overall completion and operational readiness of the home. During interactions, the residents expressed a strong sense of community and gratitude for the support they receive. However, they also shared their concerns about the building's condition. Their anticipation for the move to the new facility is high, as they look forward to a safer and more comfortable living environment. With each passing day, as the world around him grew darker, so too did his prospects. Rendered jobless and struggling with a growing sense of isolation, the weight of his circumstances began to take a toll not just on him but on his family life as well. After decades of providing a loving home, the building that houses these 63 souls is crumbling, threatening to displace them once more.
