“A blind child is often seen as a curse or a burden to the family, leading to abandonment. I’ve picked up children from roadsides myself. I too lost my sight as a child, but today I’m a senior officer thanks to the National Association for the Blind, Delhi (NAB). What would I have done without their help?” asks Veena Mehta Verma, a beneficiary turned advocate for NAB and its mission to protect and care for blind children like herself.The state of young blind girls abandoned by their families and without education is even worse. “Blind girls have no future without education. Shri Navchetan Andhjan Mandal was established on October 31, 1976 with an aim to provide help and support to the mentally retarded, visually impaired, hearing impaired and the orthopedically handicapped children in the field of education, medical care, vocational training, rehabilitation and employment generation.We educate the disabled children for their optimal development and provide professional and vocational training with the aim to enable them to earn a livelihood. We have started a separate primary school for boys and girls and a co-educational secondary school. In these schools, about 560 challenged as well as a few normal children study together. We also support students attending higher secondary school. I.T.C. and college. An industrial training institute was established in 2004 for teaching two trades viz. tailoring and computer operation. The organization has hostel facilities for 240 boys and 160 girls, three physiotherapy centres, library (Braille and normal) and a computerised Braille press. We have an old age home for the visually impaired and normal man and woman at Bhachau. All the above facilitates and services are provided free of cost to the disabled.We have received National and State awards for providing quality services to the "Divyang" persons.

Visit Date: 29th March 2024Visited by: Atreyi Bhanja, Associate, Give Grants Team During a field visit to Shri Navchetan Andhjan Mandal, our team assessed the current condition of the facility that has served as a home for blind elderly for over four decades. The primary purpose of our visit was to evaluate the structural integrity of the home and to understand the living conditions of the residents. It is clear from our observations that while the home has been well managed and the residents are cared for, the physical structure of the building has deteriorated significantly over the years. Several areas of the home, including the ceiling and walls, show severe signs of wear and pose a safety risk to its inhabitants. With the funds obtained from the campaign, the final stages of construction of the new home are almost complete. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that the new facility is not only functional but also welcoming. The staff quarters have already been completed and handed over, with staff and their families currently residing there. This step indicates significant progress towards the overall completion and operational readiness of the home. During interactions, the residents expressed a strong sense of community and gratitude for the support they receive. However, they also shared their concerns about the building's condition. Their anticipation for the move to the new facility is high, as they look forward to a safer and more comfortable living environment. Born into a world that gradually dimmed to darkness, Chandrakant's life is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those who lose their sight and the societal neglect that often follows. Chandrakant, once a vibrant individual contributing to the fabric of society through his work in the textile industry, saw his life unravel as his vision began to fade. With each passing day, as the world around him grew darker, so too did his prospects. Rendered jobless and struggling with a growing sense of isolation, the weight of his circumstances began to take a toll not just on him but on his family life as well. The man who had once provided for his loved ones found himself in a dire situation, grappling with despair and a future that seemed bleak. In this hour of darkness, Chandrakant made a decision that would alter the course of his life—he sought refuge in the Old Age Home Bhachau. Away from the home and family that could no longer support him, Chandrakant discovered a new family among the elders of the home. Here, in this sanctuary for the visually impaired and elderly, he found more than just shelter; he found a community that understood his struggles, shared his pains, and offered him the warmth and acceptance he yearned for. However, the sanctuary that has stood as a pillar of support for its residents is now in peril. After decades of providing a loving home, the building that houses these 63 souls is crumbling, threatening to displace them once more. This home, which has been a source of joy, companionship, and hope for Chandrakant and many others, now needs our help to ensure its doors remain open. Join us in this noble cause.
