And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. It's been a few months since you donated, and we are eager to share that since then, our #TogetherForRural initiative at Pathshala in Gular Dogi, Uttarakhand, has only strengthened.  Primary and secondary schools in the region have been reopening in a phased manner owing to COVID. Hence, our operations and pilots have also been tested, keeping in mind the current reality.  Over the last few months, our community-driven Pathshala Learning Centre has remained a continuous source of meaningful learning for children and served as a platform for testing our programs and curriculum. We expanded our reach to Grades 4 and 5 and now have over 200 children actively engaging across our initiatives, a testament to the community's belief in our work. Here are a few ongoing developments- Career Development workshops for our secondary school children are also underway to ensure they have access to opportunities as their urban counterparts. In addition, children have been exploring careers in journalism and building skills through fellowships and learning labs. Launched a progression based initiative that leverages short-term courses to build confidence, exposure and English language skills in children, has helped children explore their potential and become role models of learning within their community. The curriculum starts for children as early as 4th Grade. Going forward, we will be utilizing our insights from these initiatives towards expanding our network of schools and communities we serve.  Thank you for making this possible!

Right from the level of policy to on-ground action, gaps in skills, leadership and mindset thwart the development of educators who can lead high-quality learning spaces. </blockquote>Systemic shortcomings disempowering educators today:<ul><li>Gap in policy creation, between service need (student-centeredness) and service delivery (holistic education)</li><li>Lack of an ecosystem for teachers to thrive in</li></ul>These have a direct impact on an educator’s ability and willingness to embody dimensions of high-quality learning inside classrooms.<ul><li>They have motivation (intrinsic and/or extrinsic) or a sense of purpose, often arising from administrative work pressures</li><li>Being an excellent teacher is not a priority</li><li>Teachers themselves have very few spaces to receive or experience holistic and high-quality learning as our educators are trained more on content delivery as compared to developing and integrating core 21st-century competencies. India is home to 6% of the world’s poor, with 130 million of her children relying on the government education system to escape poverty cycles and gain an opportunity to thrive in life. Yet, the 10.8 million government schools  fail to deliver quality learning as most remain under-budgeted and understaffed. This leaves the enablers of the system without the capacity, mindset, and learning tools to provide high-quality learning, denying India’s children the opportunity to use the power of education to overcome social inequity and impoverishment.

Support High-Quality Education in Government Schools

Nearly 113 million children in India study in government schools. But their challenge is not access to schools anymore. Their challenge is access to their fundamental right - which is their right to quality education. A recent study conducted by ASER shows that 2 out of 4 children studying in 5th grade in government schools cannot read from a Grade 2 English textbook. Similarly, about 45% of primary grade students struggle with simple mathematical operations like division and subtraction. The gap is not in their understanding, the gap is in the way they’re being taught. There is no focus on foundational learning, where concepts are missing from their knowledge and they are only being trained to be passive rote learners. 
 Now, imagine if these very children are able to get the foundational learning opportunities they actually deserve. Imagine if their teachers are able to lead their classrooms the way they envision it, without the constraints of innovative resources. Imagine if all schools are joyful learning spaces, no matter where they are. This is what we do at Simple Education Foundation. We work on making our imagination a reality one day, for all children, all teachers and all schools everywhere in India.And we do this by empowering those key stakeholders who are impacted the most by this gap in quality education - teachers, principals, parents and students themselves. Our whole school transformation program is called ‘Simple Schools’ and we work with government schools in low-income communities across the urban and rural landscape in North India. Our goal is to equip all our partner schools with diverse high-quality teaching and learning resources and opportunities and transform them into centers of learning excellence. Our program is immersive and in-depth as we focus on the growth of each stakeholder and the role they play in transforming their own school community. 
 Currently, we work with 4 government schools, impacting over 1000 children across 26 classrooms. In less than 3 years, we’ve seen our Simple Schools transform by ensuring 75% of our children are reading at grade level.Our mission of transforming the public school system in India needs your support. 10 years old Saloni's parents did not get a chance to go to school, but they dream of a better future for their daughter and believe that education is the only way to make that dream a reality. Saloni’s parents, much like millions of parents in India, send their child to a nearby government school, with this hope that their child is learning well and is getting an opportunity that was denied to them.But the truth is quite opposite to that; Saloni can barely identify basic Hindi alphabets and cannot solve simple Math problems like dividing 150 by 2, or read basic sentences like “I walk down the lane. It is a narrow lane.”, even after being in school for 6 years. Saloni is not alone, this is the harsh reality for nearly 113 million children in our country. The government schools are often ill-equipped, in terms of teacher development, curriculum, holistic development, community engagement, etc. to impact these students 
 At SEF, we believe that this problem needs a complete transformation of the government schools from within. And this solution needs to be owned and led by those who are directly impacted by the problem.In 2016, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) identified these problems and started a School Quality Enhancement Program, to transform public schools in New Delhi. SEF is a partner organization working along with SDMC to improve the conditions of public schools and advocate for changes that should become a part of the government policy, in order to create a sustainable change in the status of education in the state and the country.Through this Whole School Transformation Project, our team works with 4 key stakeholders to transform the teaching and learning practices inside government school. We focus on:<ul><li>Building Student Leadership</li><li>Strengthening Instructional Leadership &amp; Teacher Development</li><li>Building an invested community of parents</li><li>Streamlining administrative practices inside the schools</li></ul>This equips us to transform underperforming public schools into centers of excellence that will enable the government to fix gaps in our public education system and empower our children to better tomorrow. 
 Over the last 4 years, SEF has reached out to over 80,000 teachers and directly worked with 150 teachers and 700 students across 3 states in India.With the current SQEP partnership with the government In Delhi, we will involve 500 children and 13 teachers across 2 government schools.Our students were exposed to a diverse range of skills like music, public speaking, storytelling, sports, and even farming. Meanwhile, our government school teachers were supported with continuous leadership and professional development training workshops from our end. Within the first year of support, our parent community across our Simple Schools became more active and deeply invested in how they can be better guides and mentors for their children at home.We have also measured the following impact over the past year:Our students have mastered more than 50% of the grade level math content taught to them in the 2017-2018 academic year.Increased enrollment and 82% attendance in all our classroomsAll our teachers have shown an average increase of 1 level (5 level scale) on our Teacher Effectiveness Rubric.
