Prostitution is illegal in India. However; hundreds of women and children are trafficked each year and are forced into prostitution.Snehalaya's rehabilitation centre is working for the children of female sex workers including HIV infected children, rescued victims and orphanage children since last 25 years. Most of the women engaged in sex work arrived in its red light districts at a very young age. This malicious cycle takes a devastating toll on their children who often sleep under their mother's bed and wander the streets with no hope for the future. 
 Snehalaya rehabilitation centre supports basic needs of these children, enabling them to recover from the hardships they have endured. Providing them with immediate medical care, food, shelter. Also; takes responsibility for the living cost of clothing, education and recreation. Ultimately character building of our inmates is the main objective of rehabilitation centre. Special love and care by Snehalaya’s worker to these kids has created parental bonding in Snehalaya. 
 More than 1,300 children have moved ahead from rehabilitation centre to begin new lives with new jobs in various professions, businesses as a mature & responsible citizen. Many girls have started new married lives after their weddings conducted in Snehalaya. Some have chosen to devote themselves in the service for Snehalaya. The major impact due to the project existence now there is no minor prostitution in Ahmednagar city.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers that one out of five women has been physically or sexually assaulted by a man in her life and, in 2017, Reuters ranked India the fourth most dangerous place to be a woman. Gender-based violence such as domestic violence, sex and forced-labour trafficking, dowry deaths, rape, workplace harassment and child marriage continues to increase, irrespective of the education that’s been given on these topics. Every third adolescent girl aged 15-19 years is married and every second married adolescent girl has given birth to a child. Despite harsher penalties, crimes against women and girls in the country are continuing to rise with a 31% increase in the number of reported rape cases over the past 10 years with the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India recording 88 rape cases every day in 2019.  COVID-19 has added to the issues with a dramatic rise in the cases of violence against women and girls. On top of this, online harassment such as stalking, misuse of personal pictures, and inappropriate messages has also gone up making social media and other online platforms an unsafe place for the female population.   
 Snehalaya has been working consistently to end this systematic violence against women and in turn empower the women of India since 1989. We work towards ensuring a life free from inequality, cruelty and discrimination. We believe that every woman deserves a life with dignity and freedom and hence we stand with these women and help them create a life they truly deserve. After all, these women are only a few steps away from living a life full of smiles and happiness, all they need is a little love and support. Our 23 projects not only focus on creating better lives through the provision of shelter, healthcare, education and support, we also prioritize overcoming the obstacles faced by sex workers and their children, people living with HIV/AIDS and victims of sexual and other gender-based violence. We shine a light on theissues that are least debated or talked about in society. We also bring change in the thoughts of the mass population through programs and campaigns. Ourmotto is to rescue and rehabilitate those in need and since 1989, we have supported over 200,000 women and children, ensuring their safety, selfdevelopment, self-belief and empowerment. 
 We believe an educated woman can make a difference and our campaigns with Malala Fund have promoted girls’ education engaging with 30,000 people to become change-makers. She nursed the baby with extraordinary motherly love for this deprived infected child at death's doors, assuring her future as a normal child, without any discrimination. Pinky's physical, mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs are taken care of free-of-cost. She is in very good health now, very cheerful and loves to meet visitors. Pinki has flowered and bloomed from infancy to childhood.She speaks boldly with all visitors. Snehasha has also taken the responsibility for her education. A little support and love is all that kids like Pinki need to grow up into confident and self-reliant adults. About The Program The children of Sneha Asha are HIV positive orphans and some are semi-orphans mostly with mothers who are sex-workers. While a majority of the children are from Maharashtra, Sneha Asha's doors are always open to needy children from all over the country. The children are well looked after and provided free food, clothing, shelter, medications, toiletries education, and extra-curricular activities facilities to ensure that they grow up in a normal environment. Despite the remarkable progress which our country has seen, education in India still remains problematic. With free and compulsory education only granted between the ages of six and 14, a large number of girls drop out of school to support their families or because they live in government care homes which only support them up to 10th Standard. We believe in equal access to education. When women are educated, the whole community benefits. In India, only 47% of girls start secondary education and only 2% of girls successfully complete secondary school. Within the areas we work, uneducated women and girls are targets for sex traffickers and ruthless money lenders. We work with local women and girls to raise awareness about their rights and provide them assistance to maximise their educational attainment. 
 With your help, we are planning to continue giving a lift to the girls' aspirations through our educational facilities, supporting those who are experiencing barriers to their full entitlement of schooling, and advocating for improved equality in education locally and nationally. We're offering practical support to help more girls continue their education through to 12th Standard and college. Our IT Center also provides digital literacy classes. We have also joined forces with Malala Fund to target those most at risk of child marriage and labour, trafficking and sexual exploitation. Our year long campaign aims to give girls the education to empower them to influence the education agenda nationally and internationally. 
 We help educate 1,000 girls each year, fully financing at least 25 young people through college to give them financial independence, choice, and security which will ultimately help in breaking the cycle of poverty. In our district, where HIV is prevalent, girls' education also improves family health - educated mothers are 50% percent more likely to immunize their child and administer medication properly, meaning 50% more children surviving beyond age 5.

Help educate girls in rural India

It’s unknown exactly how many babies are abandoned each year in India, with some sources reporting up to 11 million children, but it is known that over 90% of them are girls. Babies are abandoned for many reasons: victims of rape or unmarried mothers fearing recrimination, inability to financially support a child, or simply not wanting another girl in the family. 
 Many babies are left at our centre, and our Childline team and volunteers also bring us babies found abandoned in public places. Sadly, sometimes they are found too late. Many of the infants who survive are very fragile and/or premature and require hospitalisation and intensive care. Fortunately, most survive and we start the process of searching for their family and if found, counsel them on the next steps.Our adoption process finds loving families for those who remain unwanted and we are with them at each step, ensuring a safe and smooth transition into their new homes. 
 Since we opened our doors in 2004, we have successfully rescued and saved the lives of nearly 600 babies, adopting them under a government approved and accredited process.

Sweety was well looked after in the Sneha Balgruha and provided free clothing, shelter, medications, toiletries education, extra-curricular activities facilitiesOn realizing her aptitude for sports, she was encouraged to participate in various competitive sports including martial arts tournaments. She currently studies in the 7th standard. She is a fierce girl and likes to blaze her own trail in uncharted waters. According to WHO, 7.2% of the Indian population suffers from critical mental illness and 43% have experienced bouts of mental illness. Despite this, there is alarming ignorance around mental wellbeing. Most mental health patients are neglected or ignored, not receiving proper treatment and are often disowned by their families and stigmatised by society.With limited specialized healthcare support, it is estimated there are currently 200 million people awaiting treatment, which is expensive and out of reach to many of them, especially those from lower economic backgrounds. Due the COVID 19 pandemic, the few organizations who do work with mentally-ill patients are full to capacity and having to turn patients away with many now being found living on the streets.The number of social workers and organisations working to address these mental health issues are scarce. There is a need of 35,000 psychiatric social workers against the existing 900 working in the field. Similarly there is a need of 30,000 nurses required against 1,500 available to work for these patients. 
 Snehalaya provides shelter and treatment to all, especially those that others turn away. We provide psychological support and counselling through 27 projects for women and child empowerment, including victims of violence, sexual abuse and trafficking and their children, people living with HIV/AIDS and slum dwellers, Almost all of our beneficiaries have experienced a major trauma that needs to be addressed through counselling otherwise it will have a lasting effect on their lives leading to relationship issues, exploitation, crime, prostitution and more. In 2020, in response to demand increased by the COVID pandemic, we launched a new project specifically to identify and help those left to roam the streets, with a view to reuniting them with their families or providing them with support to live independently. 
 Since 1989, we have worked with around 3 lakh women, children and vulnerable men to improve their lives through counseling and other support. Since December 2020, we have rescued 48 women and men suffering with mental health issues and removed them from living on the streets, of these 35 have been successfully treated, rehabilitated and returned to their families. In many cases their families have been searching for them, some for many years and seeing them reunited with our patients who are welcomed back to their lives is amazing. We aim to shelter and rehabilitatearound 100+ patients annually in our dedicated mental health facility and continue to support another 15,000 traumatised and vulnerable people through our other projects.

Tackling mental health in India

There are over two million People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLHA) in India, and Maharashtra has the second highest number of people afflicted by the disease, with an estimated one-fifth (18% or 4.20 lakh) of the people living with HIV/AIDS in India living in the High Prevalence State. Maharashtra was also estimated to have the highest number of new HIV infections in 2019 (8.54 thousand).PLHA require a range of specialised HIV services including care, treatment and support. Out hospital and outreach work play a crucial role in identifying and enabling PLHAs to access ART as well as providing monitoring, follow-up, counseling support to those who are initiated on ART, positive prevention, drug adherence, nutrition counseling etc. This helps prevent the progression of the infection and consequent weakening of the immune system which also makes them vulnerable to opportunistic infections (OIs) such as TB. 
 Snehalaya runs the only hospital specializing in the care of patients affected by HIV in India, and we offer treatment and dignity to those that others turn away.​Specialised medical treatment is expensive and discrimination against the treatment of PLHA is prevalent, which is why our medical facilities are vital in providing life-saving medical treatment. Our 30-bed hospital provides free or subsidised healthcare to over 25,000 PLHA and their families. Our hospital, which opened in May 2017, offers a surgical unit meaning we can provide life-saving surgery to those who face discrimination and refusal of treatment based on their HIV status in our local hospitals. Other facilities include an emergency room, pre- and post-natal care, respirators, a dental clinic and X-ray and laboratory testing facilities. We also conduct HIV testing through a mobile unit, reaching out to the furthest corners of our district. It also forms part of our regular sexual health testing among our 4,000+ sex worker and MSM communities which has seen a drastic reduction in new cases. 
 As well as treating in and our patients at our hospital, we are working with the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) to raise awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS. We also conduct regular outreach work, distribute free condoms and conduct testing to identify new cases of PLHA. For those who test positive we offer emotional and practical support from shelter and healthcare to a unique marriage match making program to find life partners. We also help in the monitoring and administration of ART and during the COVID lockdowns we delivered ART medication to over 300 people unable to collect it from our district AIDS unit. Our adoption center also helps babies orphaned and diagnosed with HIV. Using pre- and post-natal medication we are also able to successfully prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to baby. Our aim is to prevent all second generation HIV and also stop new cases, given the medical advances being made it is realistic to see a future where HIV/AIDS is history!

Considering the growing social divisions and hatreds of present times, our youth cyclists will follow in Gandhi’s footsteps, encouraging goodwill to bridge the hearts of people from all the regions and states they pass through and experiencing their different geographies, religions, traditions, languages, social customs and values. They will also learn about the great history, social progress and culture of Bangladesh while instilling values such as nationalism, democracy, secularism, non-violence, equality and humanity along the way. Messages from the freedom movements of India and Bangladesh will also be shared with the younger generations in both countries. This will be done through street plays, songs of social harmony, selected bhajans, distribution of literature and displays of cultural values.Snehalaya is committed to sharing best practice and our experiences of developing projects that empower women and children. Many of our former youth volunteers have been inspired and supported by us to create their own social initiatives. By talking with youths, students, rural women, farmers, slum dwellers, tribal communities including Dalit and nomads and other minorities, cyclists will enjoy a unique experience and gain real insights into the real, on-the-ground issues affecting people in tough circumstances. Our hope is they too will be inspired to be the change they wish to see. 
 The Sadbhavana Bicycle Yatra (Goodwill Bicycle Rally) aims to raise awareness about the contributions, thoughts and the ideas of nation-building both fathers of India and Bangladesh, Gandhi and Bangbandhu inspire, while also celebrating the 75th and 50th anniversaries of the Independence of the countries. The 2,070km bicycle ride will start in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra and end in Noakhali, Bangladesh, where in 1946, Gandhi spent four months on his mission to restore peace and communal harmony.Our Sadabhavana Bicycle Yatra will start on 2 October (The birthday of Mahatma Gandhi) from the historical Ahmednagar Fort in Maharashtra. Cyclists will stay in temples, mosques, gurdwaras and a range of social institutions during their expedition, which will provide a greater understanding of secular values. The plan is to reach Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka, Bangladesh in early December after which we will continue to Noakhali where rally will be formally ended on 16 December. 
 Cyclists will spread the work and models of Snehalaya's 26 projects to at least 15,000 like-minded people, communities and organisations on their 3,000km journey, reaching some of the most remote communities. The aim is to forge connections that inspire and support people to start their own projects to support and protect those most vulnerable to exploitation. Our cycle follows one of India's busiest trafficking routes and we will be raising awareness of the plights of those forced into labour, sex work and other forms of modern slavery to hep them identify and connect with agencies who can rescue those affected. two of our female sex worker peer educators will be joining us as we also visit red lights areas en route, including Sonagachi in Kalkota.

I am Madhu Babu Chunduri from Hyderabad, working in a private organization...My mother (Chunduri Mehar Kumari) got diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia), and she was admitted to KIMS (Krishna Institute of Medical Science, Hyderabad) on November 2nd 2022.As part of medication, she had undergone chemotherapy and numerous medical procedures, and suffered a lot from the trauma.After great efforts from the doctor, she was discharged from the hospital on December 5th 2022...For more than a month, she has been admitted to the hospital, and we have somehow managed the hospital expenditures.After discharge, the doctor explained the situation and the current stage of my mother's health, and in order to cure her health, he suggested my mother use Venetoclax 100mg Tablets on a regular basis.From the day of discharge, we are using the mentioned tablets (Daily 4 Tablets), and Per month 120 tablets, and these tablets cost Seventy-Three Thousand Per Month (73,000/Month)...So far, In the last Eleven Months, we have spent all our savings and managed to buy the tablets, and with these tablets, my mother's health is getting better day by day.But now my savings are out of control and I'm unable to handle the expenditures,and at the same time, I don't want my mother to suffer because of a lack of medicine.Till now,I took a lot of credit from my known network and other sources as well...and going forward, my situation is getting worse and all the paths seem to be closed. Handling the family and mother's health is becoming a very tough task for me on a financial basis.My father passed away when I was 6 months old, and from there, my mother struggled a lot to raise the family... Prostitution is illegal in India. However; hundreds of women and children are trafficked each year and are forced into prostitution.Snehalaya's rehabilitation centre is working for the children of female sex workers including HIV infected children, rescued victims and orphanage children since last 25 years. Most of the women engaged in sex work arrived in its red light districts at a very young age. This malicious cycle takes a devastating toll on their children who often sleep under their mother's bed and wander the streets with no hope for the future. Snehalaya rehabilitation centre supports basic needs of these children, enabling them to recover from the hardships they have endured. Providing them with immediate medical care, food, shelter. Also; takes responsibility for the living cost of clothing, education and recreation. Ultimately character building of our inmates is the main objective of rehabilitation centre. Special love and care by Snehalaya’s worker to these kids has created parental bonding in Snehalaya. More than 1,300 children have moved ahead from rehabilitation centre to begin new lives with new jobs in various professions, businesses as a mature &amp; responsible citizen. Many girls have started new married lives after their weddings conducted in Snehalaya. Some have chosen to devote themselves in the service for Snehalaya. The major impact due to the project existence now there is no minor prostitution in Ahmednagar city.

Snehalaya has been working in rural India for almost three decades to bring rescue, rights and rehabilitation to those adversely affected by the commercial sex industry, poverty and droughts. We started rescuing trafficked and forced women and children from red light areas in 1989 and have been fighting HIV/AIDS, reducing 2nd generation prostitution by 100% and ensuring there are no minors working in the sex industry in our district ever since.Our mission statement is that every woman and child should have the right to a life free from inequality, cruelty and discrimination. We support around 20,000 beneficiaries a year through 19 rehabilitation, health and AIDS prevention, education and awareness-raising projects. We shelter 250 children of sex workers, minors rescued from sex work and those orphaned by or living with HIV. We provide a safe and supportive family setting, with our own school and HIV hospital. We also work in slum areas, run an organic farm for people living with HIV, provide rescue and adoption to abandoned babies. We are nationally recognised as a key healthcare provider for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and also have an outstanding track record in education and sustainable social change.
