I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Snehalaya is one of the largest residential caretakers in North-East India, for underprivileged children who have no one to care for them; either orphan or abandoned since 2001. Besides providing them with basic needs like food, shelter, clothes, medical care, the children are given education, recreation, counseling and opportunities for developing their hidden talents. The strategy is to build up the capacity of the children through education and skills training so that as young adults they will be able to stand on their own feet. Since its inception, more than 1000 children in need of care and protection have been beneficiaries of the various programs run by Snehalaya.

The major concern of Snehalaya is to take care of the needs of the children who are living there.
