For over three decades, the HELP organization has been at the forefront of combating human trafficking in all its forms, including forced labor, sex trafficking, the worst forms of child labor, child marriage, and other exploitative practices. HELP addresses human trafficking through the following methodologies:1.     Survivor-Informed and Community-Led Programming- HELP collaborates with survivors, local leaders, and community groups to deliver trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and sustainable protective and preventive services. Sridevi, at the age of 10 joined our home with the support of HELP volunteers. She was born to a family living in Chilakaluripet. She has five older siblings who were tragically all involved in dance and sex work. Her family members were trying to coax her into the industry when she came to us.

When Sridevi joined HELP she was a dropout of 3rd standard. Following our training and encouragement, she appeared for her 7th standard examination and made it through. She also learnt to sing as well as participating in other cultural activities, and various campaigns and programmes organised by us.

At the age of 20, Srideva was married to her nearest relation, a supervisor in a spinning mill, who promised to also look after her mother. Her reasoning to proceed with the marriage was to distract her sisters from insisting she join them in the dance and sex industry. It worked! Today, she survives independently utilising the good skills she learnt through vocational training.

The devastating flash flood in Budameru Rivulet on Saturday night (August 31) paralysed life in more than half of Vijayawada Town (Andhra Pradesh- India) and over 2.7 lakh people were stranded in the marooned houses. Death toll mounts to 64, expected to rise further. As several people remain missing, authorities have advised families to check for bodies at the mortuary in the Vijayawada Government General Hospital. Even after four days, normalcy is yet to be restored. Budameru is a major drain has been flooding the city every rainy season earning the sobriquet ‘Sorrow of Vijayawada’. The discharge capacity of this major drain is 11,000 cusecs of water. To control the floods, it joins Krishna River upstream of the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada City through Budameru Diversion Canal (BDC). However, the discharge capacity of BDC is very low and its modernisation was never done. To release water into Krishna River from Budameru, the water levels of the Krishna River should be less than 12 feet, otherwise, the flood water will be pushed back with the same intensity as of the river water. Since September 1, under the impact of the low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal, there were heavy rains in the upper reaches of the NTR and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh During 24 hours on 1st Sep 2024, there has been a record rainfall upstream of Prakasam Barrage leading to heavy inflows into various streams joining Budameru as well as the Krishna River that in turn fall up on the many slums in Vijayawada city which has been immersed almost all the households in to flood waters. Lakhs of people have remained helpless losing all the household material including basic amenities like drinking water and food. With each passing day, deaths caused by the floods and rains  have been rising for 3 days. Flood victims in Vijayawada have witnessed floating bodies in several areas over the past four days. As per government statistics on Wednesday, the total toll stands at 54. As several people remain missing, authorities have advised families to check for bodies at the mortuary in the Vijayawada Government General Hospital.  It is expected to surge once the floodwater recedes completely. Subsequently, scores of people arrived at the GGH on Wednesday. However, identifying the deceased has become a daunting task as the bodies have been soaked in floodwaters for four days. As per HELP’s study the people from the vulnerable community have taken loans with high interest (15-18%) per month where they do not had any plan of repayment and which in turn increase the risk of debt bondage. To overcome from this situation sustainable alternative livelihood generation is need of the hour. It is challenge for these communities to avail the knowledge &amp; information of accessing the facilities. A barrier of access between the community and the Government centers is quite prevalent and not available in the location. According to the State AIDS Control Society's 2020 figures, Andhra Pradesh has 130,000 victims of human trafficking and sex workers, with 209,000 people depending on them. In Vijayawada and its surrounding areas alone, there are 16,000 sex workers, and 36,000 people rely on them. Currently, these sex workers and victims of human trafficking residing in and around Vijayawada are suffering from hunger and distress due to the floods. Society for Help Entire Lower &amp; rural people - HELP  (https://helpap.org/) is working for the socio-economic empowerment of Sex workers and Survivors of human trafficking consists of more than 500 rescued survivors of human trafficking and victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Sex Workers) in the three district of Andhra Pradesh including Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna (Vijayawada slums and adjacent villages where more than 300 Sex workers and Survivors of human trafficking are living). There are nearly 350 families of Sex workers and Survivors of human trafficking have been rigorously affected by the flashfloods in and around VIJAYAWADA city. Our Sex workers and Survivors of human trafficking affected by Vijayawada floods had to grapple for food and water to sustain themselves as they battled the wrath of rain for continuous three days. Even as government relief operations continued to reach the victims, the loss of lives and properties in combat with the wrath of water left a deep mark on the victims. However, humanity keeps afloat the flood-ravaged colonies of Vijayawada but not meeting the needs. HELP Response:   As of now, HELP and survivors collective VIMUKTHI teams are able to reach out 168 rescued survivors of human trafficking and victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Sex Workers) for last 10 days and supplied food packets, drinking water, milk and nutritious biscuits to their children in Vijayawada city and surrounding villages. As a next step, HELP is promptly planned to reaching out to all the affected families of Sex workers and Survivors of human trafficking in and around Vijayawada to survive and rebuild their lives by providing relief services. There are approximately 10 million commercial sex workers (CSWs) in India among whom over one million are minors. Most of them are trafficked but others are forced into the industry because they face poverty, unemployment, and few other options. Almost all the children of CSWs end up becoming a part of this trade. 
 Our programme provides children of CSWs a residential and secure, educational environment. Red-light areas are so dangerous that we guide, counsel, and educate children in a much healthier atmosphere. This gives them a chance to experience school without facing social disparity and embarrassment.Aside from education, this programme caters to the children’s medical needs, clothing, food and shelter, as well as providing these services free of cost.

The pandemic has further exacerbated the vulnerability of children of sex workers, and exposed them to sexual exploitation and trafficking due to lack of work and wages. Society For Help Entire Lower And Rural People is working in three districts of Andhra Pradesh to support young girls by providing them with access to education, skill and vocational training and peer counseling to make them independent. ₹2,000 is the cost of providing vocational / livelihood training for one child for a 3 month period.Commercial Sex Workers are one of the most vulnerable group severely affected by the COVID 19 pandemic outbreak. For several sex workers sex work is the sole means of their survivaland returning back to home is never be an option due to lack of income.But it became invariable for them to return back due to ceaseless lockdowns, curfews and other restrictions enforced by the state that abruptly affected their income. This impact the girls and young women among sex workers families to expose various forms of violence.The key findings from an assessment by HELP organisation reveals that, aggravation of financial difficulties as the foremost challenge for sex workers posed by COVID as 100% respondents reported a reduction in their monthly earnings from 33% - 100% fall, whereas 88% reported having no alternative source of income and 61% never heard of alternate livelihood opportunities.Children of sex workers fall prey to sexual exploitation and even early/child marriages.However, for most adolescent girls from sex workers families, lack of viable skills or education, and limited awareness of the opportunities outside the prostitution localities were primary barriers to pursuing other opportunities/alternative livelihoods. They are in need of a helping hand. 
 The project is proposed to address the issue through education support, orientation on life skills and also imparting training in market demand-oriented livelihoods/employment opportunities to girls and young women among three districts of Andhra Pradesh. The vulnerable girls and young women (children of sex workers) from the prostitution localities will be identified by the community volunteers. They will be trained as ToT on child rights and child protection including the ill effects of child marriages, child sexual abuse and exploitation and trafficking. They will be provided with peer counselling by the trained from ToT on importance of education and skill trainings.The mothers of adolescent girls and young women who suffering without income due to down fall in business in the wake of COVID 19 outbreak will be supported for alternative livelihoods for betterment of their socio-economic standards. The improved financial condition of families of sex workers will automatically provide a sense of courage and confidence among the sex workers and their children to cope up with the challenges of different forms of violence against their including child sexual abuse &amp; exploitation, child marriage and trafficking. The adolescent girls interested in education will be supported with books, bags, school fee and other relevant material.  
 The children of sex workers who are adolescent girls and young women are empowered with enough knowledge on child rights, issues and challenges that harm their blossom childhood. They walk towards local schools ensuring their remarkable retention rate in education. The life skill education provides them enough knowledge in communication skills, decision making, problem solving, critical thinking and a sense of good and bad along with interpersonal relations and so on.The training courses imparted become handy to the young women to acquire decent job opportunities/self-employment where they could stand on their own without dependency. Formation and strengthening of community-based child clubs will sustain the results of these interventions. Thereby, the enhanced scope of various forms of violence including child sexual abuse, exploitation, child marriage and trafficking of adolescent girls and young women will get addressed. They are empowered to say “NO” to harmful social practices that affect their childhood. The project intervention on socio-economic empowerment of sex workers will results in their financial security, social protection, crisis response at individual level, and institutional development at community levels. The awareness created among sex workers on existing support services, benefits from government welfare schemes improve accessibility of social entitlements.
