I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Barua who is lovingly called ‘Sir’ and ‘Deuta’ (father in Assamese) by the residents of Seneh. With your help, 80-year-old Group Captain Barua can fulfill his mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless women from dying on the streets, alone. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. The SPID Society is running 4 centres for children 24/7 in Delhi.1) SPID-SMS Center2) SPID-Kishori home3) SPID Boys' homes4) SPID After Care HomePresently, around 110 underprivileged children are living full-time at our children's homes. Most of these are the children of women in prostitution. Previously these children were living with their mothers inside the brothels. Most of these vulnerable women are victims of human trafficking. They are brought to GB Road from all over India, through a powerful nexus of pimps and traffickers, and forced to work in prostitution. Forcing these women to then have a child is one way of ensuring better emotional control over them. Once women have entered prostitution, they face a strong social stigma and it's very hard for them to leave.The NGO is facing a big shortage of raw food materials to feed these children and toiletries for their daily utilization of 100+ children. Additionally, we are also desperately in need of a van cum ambulance for supplying food for children from one centre to other and for medical emergency purposes, especially at night. 
 SPID-SMS is the only centre for children operating 24/7 on GB Road, providing healthcare, nutrition and education as well as protecting children from sexual exploitation and abuse. The Centre opens its arms to every single child living in the brothels. The mothers visit their children in the Centre regularly and can receive emotional support and counselling there. SMS is one of the programs of The Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID).After the children enter the SPID-SMS centre, there is considerable improvement in their physical and mental development. Regular health checks, psycho-social support and an improved nutrition programme have been shown to benefit their overall health and emotional welfare.The children are enrolled in nearby formal schools and receive remedial classes in the afternoons in the centre to support their progress. In 2016, SPID-SMS opened its first After-Care Home for young women aged 18+.We are trying to nurture more children and enrol them in formal schools. This ensures they have a safe space to live away from the red-light area whilst they undertake further education to establish their careers and become self-sufficient young adults.There are numerous success stories, with former children from the centre now working as nurses, teachers, social workers, paramedical staff, bank employees and in other professions.The SPID-SMS Center is very grateful for the support received so far from the government, individuals and other donors.However, more support is crucial to ensure the continuity of the care provided and to secure a better future for the children in the Centre, as well as the young women in the After-Care Home.You can support them in many ways such as<ul><li>Volunteering (by donating your time as a computer, English, or art teacher, or with other skills…),</li><li>Kind (such as cleaning and hygiene products, food, children's clothing, shoes, books and school supplies…) or by giving a</li><li>Financial donation.</li></ul>
