The vast majority of women and girls belonging to Gond and Madiya tribes, residing in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, use rags, leaves or mud instead of sanitary napkins. There is a lack of affordable menstrual products in tribal areas of Gadchiroli. Spending the menstruating days in a separate hut, gaokor, keeps women from participating in everyday household and socioeconomic activities, resulting in a loss of economic activity. These inhabitable kurmaghar or gaokor lack amenities required for fulfilling basic human needs. In order to succeed in banishing this practice in future, it is mandatory to offer economic empowerment to the women in addition to providing health awareness about proper hygienic methods to manage their menstrual health and hygiene. 
 Sensitization and awareness about Menstrual Health Management·         Set up a reusable cloth pad making enterprise involving tribal young girls.·         Train 500 young girls to make reusable cloth pads·         Train at least 50 young girl in account and stock keeping·         Identify and train at least 50 Sakhi or Peer educators to in a village·         Undertake 1 awareness campaign per month about the importance of using reusable cloth pads and its maintenance·         Provide free supply of reusable cloth pads for a period of 1 year in Gaokor (Kurmaghar)·         Develop old cloth drop-in and sorting centre at the SHG centre 
 The project intends to provide livelihood to tribal women by training them on making reusable cloth pads. This economic activity will also help in sensitizing the target women population about hygienic practices to manage menstrual health and create a demand for safe products. Thus the dual objective project will engage girls and women in earning income and empowering them with better menstrual health management (MHM) practices. The envisaged project intends to build an enterprise model on a pilot basis in the tribal areas where young girls would be fostered to make reusable cloth pads. The project will be implemented in 20 villages with a majority of the population belonging to the Tribal community. The pilot project aims to generate awareness and demand for the low cost sanitary napkins as an effective alternative to manage menstruation. Since, without availing effective alternatives for, girls and women will not be motivated to adopt new behavioral practices. Hence, the project will make sure production, promotion and use of the reusable cloth pad is done by the target beneficiaries themselves

Menstrual Hygiene Awareness in tribal women by strengthening livelihoods

Introduction: Menstruation is a normal, natural process that occurs in all healthy adolescent and adult women who haven't reached menopause. Even though it is a natural process, menstruation continues to be shrouded in misconceptions and perceived as a matter of extreme embarrassment in India. Menstrual practices are clouded by taboos and social restrictions for women as well as the girls. The menstrual health management problem rises in proportion because of lack of awareness about the usage of sanitary napkins. The high price of sanitary napkins makes it a low priority for women managing low income or poor households.An initiative by Sparsh &amp; the Area of Focus: Our efforts on bringing menstrual health &amp; hygiene awareness is focussed on the tribal areas of Gadchiroli District. Located in the North-Eastern side of Maharashtra sharing state borders with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The total population of the district is 10, 72,942 (50.45% male and 49.54% female population) with a literacy rate of 66.03%. (Census 2011, 2011) Out of the total population, 38.17% are considered as Tribal population belonging to either Gond, Madia, Pardhan or Kolam tribes. The vast majority of women and girls belonging to Gond and Madiya tribes, residing in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, use rags, leaves or mud instead of sanitary napkins. This is incoherence to the statistics provided by National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) conducted during 2015-16 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which states that over 42.2% of women in India continue to use old fabrics, rags, dried leaves, sand, wood shavings and even ash during their period. The social taboo escalates in the tribal district of Gadchiroli as menstruating women are banished in a temporary hut outside village, known as gaokor, as they are considered impure. Gaokors, considered as public property, are not maintained and lack basic amenities like drinking water, proper toilets and bathroom. Given the location of the huts, it is not uncommon for wild animals to make an appearance, and there have been reports of women dying from snakebites while staying in gaokor. Women and adolescent girls live in it during their menstrual cycle and rely on family to bring them food and other items.Need for the project: There is a lack of affordable menstrual products in tribal areas of Gadchiroli. However, awareness campaigns about the importance and advantages of using reusable cloth pads will be targeted at all sections of the society in order to slowly eradicate the practice of gaokor. The specific objectives of the project are as follows:<ul><li>Set up a reusable cloth pad making enterprise involving tribal SHGs</li><li>Train 10 women per village to make reusable cloth pads</li><li>Train at least 1 women SHG head members in the account and stock keeping</li><li>Identify and train at least 2 Sakhi or Peer educators to in a village</li><li>Undertake 1 awareness campaign per month about the importance of using reusable cloth pads and its maintenance</li><li>Provide a free supply of reusable cloth pads for a period of 1 year in gaokor</li><li>Develop old cloth drop-in and sorting centre at the SHG centre</li></ul> After intensive training and awareness campaigns, SPARSH aims that the tribal women will be capable of producing high-quality reusable pads. Some of the specific outcomes of the project include:<ul><li>Establishing women run reusable cloth pad making enterprise</li><li>Training at least 10 women per village to make reusable cloth pads</li><li>3 women, SHG head members managing the accounts and stock keeping of the enterprise</li><li>2 women working as Sakhi or Peer educators to in each village</li><li>Organizing 12 awareness campaigns about the importance of using reusable cloth pads</li><li>and its maintenance</li><li>Initiating setting up of an old cloth drop-in and sorting centre at the SHG centre</li></ul>The impact of these initiatives will be on at least 400-800 adolescent girls/women in 1 year, which we plan to expand in the forthcoming years.

Gadchiroli District is one of the worst affected regions in eastern Maharashtra having highest number of Covid cases among its neighbouring areas in the past few months. With crumbling health infrastructure and too many families to support, the local administration is not able to reach every needy in the area. Many families have lost their sole bread earners to Covid and are struggling for their survival; Covid affected patients who are home quarantined are not able to get basic nutritious food, medical supplies and necessary care. Our ASHA and ANGANWADI Health workers, fondly called as Corona Warriors are also working 24/7 to ensure maximum help is given, but their efforts are under-recognised and under-paid. SPARSH is now initiating a fundraiser to help mobilise funds for a variety of causes that will aim to improve and aid all the Covid affected people in the region. 
 <ol><li>Financial help for Covid Affected Families: Many families have lost their loved ones/sole bread earners to Covid and are left with no financial assistance; SPARSH is initiating a drive to help such families in the region for their sustainability;</li><li>Arrange Medical Supplies/Ambulance Services: Since the local administration/hospitals are overloaded, we plan to provide help with monitoring/assisting the home quarantines patients in the region</li><li>Distribute Ration/Medical Supplies to Covid Patients/Affected families: Maximum outreach to the rural families who have lost their livelihoods/loved ones due to Covid;</li><li>Generate Livelihood for the Tribals Generate livelihood for the Rural/Tribal Population: To help the rural/tribal daily wage worker families to sustain their living inspite of the pandemic;</li></ol> 
 <ol><li>Reach more than 1000 Covid affected families to provide them necessary financial help/Medical assistance/Distribution of ration kits;</li><li>Distribute atleast 500 or more ration kits in the tribal/rural region of Gadchiroli</li><li>Supply medical essentials like medicines, Oxymeters, thermal scanners to the ASHA workers to help them monitor and assist home-quarantined Covid patients</li><li>Generate livelihood for Covid affected families who have lost their bread earners</li><li>Provide financial remuneration to our frontline health care workers</li></ol>

Covid Relief Support

Gadchiroli district had the highest death rate in Maharashtra in the Covid-19 second wave in April-May 2021. Around 350 families who have lost loved ones in the second wave. Agriculture was the only major source of income in this area, so thisproject was launched to assist those affected. The project selected 60 poor and needy families who didn't have any effective means to support life and who were willing to participate in skill training for sustainable livelihood. .The project is aimed at providing a permanent livelihood to 60 families who lost their livelihood and will not have to rely on others for their daily needs. 
 TRAINING PLAN FOR S USTAINABILITYPoor and needy women from marginalised groups, particularly those from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, were chosen for this trainingt hrough in-person interviews. Selection factors were Covid-affected families and groups living below the poverty line. They were trained to make 'masks' and 'reusable cloth sanitary pads', considering the corona period and the needs of the community. The women who successfully completed the 10 days of training with three days of mechanical instruction were called by out-of-town coaches, who presented them "Certificates of Success" from the dignitaries. After completion of training the shilai Kendra were established at the respective villages. SPARSH provided stools, chairs, cupboard, shilai tool kits and other essential material. Women will be able to improve their financial situation by using these resources and the skills they have learned during the programme. 
 Discussions with the district superintendent ofpolice are already underway, and via his office,Sparsh will make steps to obtain cloth masks for all police officers and house guards operating in the Gadchiroli area as well as cloth sanitary pads for female police officers. Additionally, discussions with the District Collector, Vice Chancellor of Gondwana University, and Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad are under progress. .Through them, attempts will be made to make cloth masks and sanitary pads through the district's 462 Gram Panchayat offices. This action aims to give skilled women affected by the Covid disaster a sustainable source of income.
