“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. IRAO – Livelihood Generation Program for Women headed families

In India, there are approximately 20 million* children who do not receive adequate parental care support as they are orphaned or are at a risk of losing their family. This is estimated to rise to 24.35 million by the year 2021.The total number of orphans stands at 1.27 million, which would be 1.49 million by the year 2021.These children either become street children or are at a risk or facing abuse as they have no family or the caregivers are not equipped to provide a safe family environment. SOS Children’s Villages of India is reaching a small portion of this population (approx. 24,000) and has a long way to go…with your support. SOS plans to expand its reach from 24,000 to 60,000 by 2020. SOS Children's Villages of India is providing support to these families and children by giving them access to digital education and dry ration kits.The marginalized communities are struggling continuously to meet their basic needs, which further jeopardize children's safety and protection. These challenges if remain unanswered will lead the children/youth and families in an intricate cycle of problems and poverty. SOS India is committed to respond to the emergent needs of these marginalized groups consisting poorest of the poor, schedule castes, schedule tribes, migrants and other socially backward groups.SOS Children’s Village of India has been working with communities at grass root level since a decade, which has now reached out to over 18,500 children across 32 locations pan-India
