INTRODUCTIONTree-planting is the process of transplanting tree seedlings, generally for forestry, land reclamation, or landscaping purpose. It differs from the transplantation of larger trees in agriculture, and from the lower cost but slower and less reliable distribution of tree seeds. Trees contribute to their environment over long periods of time by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe.Indiscriminate cutting of trees leading to deforestation has drastically reduced green coverage of the Earth. The deforestation has resulted into many environmental hazards like Global Warming, Reduced Rainfall, Erosion of Soil, Scarcity of Water due to evaporation, water table in soil going deep etc. It is need of the hour to plant more trees to restore the environmental balance, bring down the global temperature, reduce / minimize soil erosion, provide habitat to animal and birds, reduce carbon dioxide levels and increase oxygen level in atmosphere. In short, restore the balance of eco-system to support and sustain life of plants, animal kingdom and mankind.In silviculture the activity is known as reforestation, or afforestation, depending on whether the area being planted has or has not recently been forested. It involves planting seedlings over an area of land where the forest has been harvested or damaged by fire, disease or human activity. Tree planting is carried out in many different parts of the world, and strategies may differ widely across nations and regions and among individual reforestation companies. Tree planting is grounded in forest science, and if performed properly can result in the successful regeneration of a deforested area. Reforestation is the commercial logging industry's answer to the large-scale destruction of old growth forests, but a planted forest rarely replicates the biodiversity and complexity of a natural forest.Tree Plantation drives combat many environmental issues like deforestation, erosion of soil, desertification in semi-arid areas, global warming and hence enhancing the beauty and balance of the environment. Trees absorb harmful gases and emit oxygen resulting in increase in oxygen supply. On an average, a single tree emits 260 pounds of oxygen annually. Similarly, a fully-grown tree is sufficient for 18 human beings in one acre of land in one year stressing the importance of tree plantation for mankind. The trained volunteers then plant saplings, trees in groups in available land.  NEED ASSESSMENT: ➢ The large-scale destruction of natural areas due to mining operations, a restoration strategy is needed as a part of the overall mining management plan. In restoration, emphasis is given first to build soil organic matter, nutrients and vegetation cover to accelerate natural recovery process. Tree plantations can be used as a tool for mine spoil restoration as they have ability to restore soil fertility and ameliorate micro climatic conditions. We discuss here various approaches of ecosystem restoration on mine spoil, criteria for the selection of plantation species and future research needs in this regard.➢ Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. And the list of benefits that forests provide only gets longer.➢ Planting trees help to reduce ozone levels in urban cities. Even the biodiversity gets enriched in turn.➢ Trees control the climate by moderating the effects of Sun, wind and rain. While they moderate summer temperature by providing shade, in winters,they act as windbreaks for homes.➢ Trees reduce soil erosion, because they bind the soil through their roots, which would otherwise have been washed away in rainstorms and flood. Trees also help in improving the fertility of soil. Rich soil transfers nutrients to food, which contributes to human health.➢ The greenery of trees adds color to the landscape and enhances the beauty of environment.➢ Trees are great absorbent of noise.➢ Planting of trees facilitates better management of flood water. Trees also moderate flood hazards.➢ The demand for clean drinking water can be met by planting new trees. The plantation of mixed species will balance the nutrients absorbed from the soil, thus preventing the soil from turning infertile. The leaves falling from the trees will improve the humus content of the soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
