Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. Moreover, a good number of children rescued by Girish are diagnosed HIV positive. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. For 20 Years, Sri Arunodayam has been providing a safe and caring environment for abandoned mentally challenged children in Chennai, India.These Children have been abandoned in hospitals and in crowded public places such as railway and bus stations. At times, even in dustbins!At our home they are welcomed, nurtured, fed, clothed, rehabilitated and loved.We try to give these children what they lost - a home and a family!They are 108 children at our home.

Child abandonment has always been an issue in our country, even in pre-COVID days. That’s why Sri Arunodayam came into existence in 2002 to help alleviate this despicable societal practice through its rescue and rehabilitation services, while advocating for and defending the rights of abandoned children with ID who are unable to defend themselves. And now with the devastating effects of COVID-19 on families, the rate of abandonment will likely rise. Estimates say that children with disabilities are at a greater risk of being subjected to some form of violence. 50% of those with a hearing impairment and 60% of those with an intellectual impairment are sexually abused. 90% may not survive past the age of 20.Despite the data, there are very few homes for abandoned children with ID across our country. Most homes function as “Day Care” centers funded by parents. Each month, Sri Arunodayam receives around 10-15 requests for shelter but is unable to accommodate new entrants as its current homes have reached full capacity. Pained to turn vulnerable children away, Sri Arunodayam commenced the construction of a new ‘residential cum rehabilitation’ home in August 2019 to accommodate 100 more abandoned children than it does today.  
 Although Sri Arunodayam had focused mainly on rescue in the initial years, today we have transformed into ‘residential-cum-rehabilitation’ homes offering comprehensive services and therapies for the holistic development of children with developmental delay and intellectual disability. Sri Arunodayam assumes life-long responsibility for abandoned children with ID, providing them with a safe/permanent shelter, nutritious food, medical care, and rehabilitation therapies so that they can lead purposeful lives and be integrated back into society at their own pace.Thus, the construction of Sri Arunodayam’s new ‘residential cum rehabilitation’ home commenced in August 2019 and will include a fully equipped medical center, physiotherapy and special education class rooms, a vocational training center, and other living requisites such as dormitories, restrooms, a centralized kitchen/pantry and dining hall, hydrotherapy areas and a recreation garden space. The home will be able to accommodate 100+ abandoned children with ID who will be in the care of dedicated professional caregivers, special educators, speech therapists, physiotherapists, vocational trainers and medical care specialists.As an NGO, Sri Arunodayam relies solely on Government funding and the generosity of corporate and individual donors to keep the organization running, especially as services provided to the beneficiaries are absolutely free.

Despite the fact that Sri Arunodayam is the only government certified reception unit for children living with mental retardation and intellectual disability in the area, private and government hospitals near us do not readily assist in times of emergency. That’s why Sri Arunodayam had to set up a fully equipped medical unit on its very own premises (with the help of corporate donors), so that precious lives aren’t lost because of lack of facilities. In addition, a donor generously sponsored an ambulance that provides 24/7 transportation services for critically ill children in need of serious medical interventions. It is a known fact that the life expectancy of children with mental retardation is much shorter than that of normal children. Our children tend to fall ill easily due to the nature of their disability. Almost all of them need to be on medication and require constant medical supervision. So, we keep a dedicated doctor and a nurse at the center who monitor the children’s health daily. 
 For over 16 years, Sri Arunodayam has been providing a safe and caring environment for abandoned intellectually challenged children in Chennai, India. These children are abandoned in hospitals, crowded public places such as railway and bus stations, and at times, even in dustbins. Child Welfare Committees, the Police and India's ChildLine services bring them to Sri Arunodayam where they are nurtured, restored to health and rehabilitated. We try to give them what they have lost – a home and a family! Sri Arunodayam is one among very few homes that harbour abandoned intellectually challenged children. Most homes act as day care centers which are funded by parents. We, on the other hand, assume total responsibility and provide life-long care with nutritious food, accommodation, medical aid, special education, physiotherapy and vocational training to help them sustain a trade. Sri Arunodayam has set up a medical unit on its premises for 24/7 healthcare monitoring of the children. The physiotherapy unit is another health discipline very critical for the functional rehabilitation of such children.  Specific medical therapies are provided and supervised for over 110 children, and follow ups are carried out by the medical staff. Each child’s medical file is periodically reviewed based on the nurses', caregivers’ and physiotherapists’ reports. More serious cases that require intense therapy are moved to the government hospital under our doctor’s supervision.
