For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Penn Nalam, a unit of Sri Dhanvantri Trust, is a &quot;women for women&quot; cancer prevention and early detection center. The prime objective is to save lives of women suffering from cancer. We go to different places- villages, schools, colleges, companies and offices to spread awareness about cancer and to provide them door-step screening and blood test packages.We are able to identify the common problems such as anaemia, thyroid, high sugar and cholesterol levels, and hyper tension among women. Many are suffering from heart problems. So, we have designed an additional blood test package and ECG test for women who come for a cancer screening test. 
 We have started doing blood tests and ECG for people with poor economic conditions. We have clubbed the blood test package as enlisted below:1. Sugar2. Hemoglobin3. Cholesterol4. Thyroid 5. ECG and Blood pressureWe conduct all these tests for just Rs.600. 
 We are estimating that among every 100 women, there will be 20-25 anemic cases, 15-20 cases of hypertension. 5-10 cases of diabetes and 5-10 women will be having cholesterol problems. 5-7 cases of ECG abnormality will be identified. The above new cases will be identified and guided properly to take proper diet and medication. This will surely help them to lead a healthy life and avoid unexpected health problems like heart attacks and other medical emergencies.

Penn Nalam Well Women Checkup Programme

The Challenges faced by the women and her family diagnosed with breast cancers are many.In addition to having to deal with trauma of diagnosis and treatment related issues, the economic impact is enormous. Currently the majority of women rely on private sector for treatment and most of them are not insured or under insured.Lack of funds is a serious issue while we are investing our resources towards the research and development. Being an NGO/NPO it is a big concern. They come in trickle and the same is not matching with our project time lines, even though the cause and the objectives are very clear, to serve the society, especially the women in need. 
 The establishment of CBCRF will be the prime focus of the funds raised through this project. All approvals have been obtained; CMDA approval also obtained. The contractors have been shortlisted and the construction would begin soon. 
 A new model of Breast Cancer care will be developed to provide a comprehensive, holistic and cost effective breast care. It will also provide training for medical and paramedical personnel in breast cancer care and encourage research in the ethnic diversities in breast cancer biology and outcomes.

We go to different places- villages, schools, colleges, companies and offices, to spread awareness about cancer and to provide them with door-step screening. Penn Nalam devotes nearly 30% of its clinical time for Cancer Awareness Programme, with our main aim to prevent, control and detect cancer at an early stage of the disease. A vast majority of women in our part of the world do not present themselves for medical care early enough due to various reasons, such as illiteracy, lack of awareness and financial constraints.Because of the absence of a proper breast cancer screening program, the majority of breast cancers are diagnosed at a very advanced stage. Consequent to this, the mortality due to breast cancer is very high. To intensify our initiative to reach out to the very doorstep of the deserving, we have implemented mobile screening programs to do mammographic and cervical cancer screening in and around Chennai and Tamil Nadu. 
 The project aims to offer Pap smear screening for cervical cancer to all married women. Breast thermography screening for breast cancer will be offered to all women. X-Ray Mammographic screening for breast cancer will be offered to women between ages 40 to 70 years. Blood tests – Majority of women from lower economic strata of society have anaemia and low sugar complaints. They are often not aware of these health problems. Hence, Penn Nalam has decided to conduct sugar and haemoglobin tests for all women who are participating in the screening camp. 
 Screening for breast and cervical cancer will detect disease at an early stage. Early detection has the following advantages.• Early detection can cure breast cancer and regular Pap Smears can prevent cervical cancer.• Organ preservation may be possible with early detection.• Serious, expensive cytotoxic treatments like chemotherapy will not be required.• Health care costs are less with early detection, as treatment intensity is less.The majority of the lower economic family women have anaemia problems and sugar complaints. The identified women will be properly guided to take proper diet and medication.
