I didn't understand what had happened. The acid had gone into both my eyes. I was rushed to the hospital. By then I had already sight in one of my eyes and could barely see anything from the other. When they splashed water on me each drop felt like a thousand needles,” recalls Shaheen as she narrates events from the fateful day.“Little did I know that the attack was just the beginning of my struggles. Our family did not have enough resources to carry the burden of my treatment. I would go and ask people for funds but would be turned down. I would cry on my way back but would wipe my tears and soldier on. The fight still continues even after a decade. One evening in September 2018, Nethra’s alcoholic husband doused her in kerosene, set her on fire, locked the door from outside, and walked away. Hearing her wails, neighbours came to Nethra’s rescue and took her to a government hospital. Despite third-degree burns, Nethra survived after months in the hospital. But she became almost immobile. She could hardly move her hands or head as her chin was almost fused to the neck. She survived on liquid and semi-solid food as she couldn’t chew or close her mouth. “My face was so severely disfigured that my mother hid all the mirrors at home so that I would not see myself,” recalls Nethra. As the low-income family couldn’t afford proper after-care or reconstructive surgeries, Nethra was getting suicidal when Agni Raksha, a Bangalore-based NGO came to her rescue. After multiple surgeries at the NGO’s ‘Safe Haven,’ its critical care unit, Nethra is back on her feet. She is trained in tailoring and now works odd jobs and takes care of her two children.Like Nethra, most burn victims who come to Agni Raksha belong to low-income families and almost 95% of them are women. While some are victims of severe forms of domestic violence by husbands, others try to commit suicide by immolating themselves because of constant harassment. But due to the pandemic and lack of funds, Agni Raksha run by Dr Prema Dhanraj, a burn victim herself, had to shut its free critical surgeries unit. It has been a huge blow to burn victims from low-income families. We have the building, beds and other facilities, but we don’t have funds to pay doctors and support staff or buy critical care equipment and medicines. I feel very bad for victims who require emergency treatment, reconstructive surgery and post-operative care. On most days she goes hungry and sometimes a small vada pav is all that she can afford to eat in the entire day. As per records, 33% of women experience domestic abuse which not only affects their mental and physical health, it also adversely affects the health and mental state of their children.Over the last 3 years, we have seen a steady 10% increase in the number of women who face domestic abuse and come to us for relief and help. Not only has it increased but also intensified. Physical, mental, economic, emotional and sexual violence, preference of male child/birth of a girl-child, sex-selective abortions, female infanticide, destitution of wives and girls, child marriages, bigamy, extramarital affairs, are just the tip of the iceberg.We have also seen a steady increase in the number of men who are registering cases with us for resolving their domestic issues. 
 The Family Counseling Center counsels and aids women from all walks of life, irrespective of their religion, caste, class, sect, creed etc. We use multiple approaches to address the issue of domestic violence.<ol><li>We work with the youth to spread the message of gender equality and sensitivity through awareness campaigns, plays, and premarital workshops.</li><li>We work with the women in the community spreading awareness about their rights, laws focused on women, the domestic violence act, their rights and responsibilities and much more.</li><li>We have started the Community Counselors Training Program last year. This on-going 1-year training program is for select women leaders who are trained as counselors. Today we have over 30 women trained and ready to step-in to stop violence in their community.</li></ol>We have recently held a safety audit for girls living in and around Chembur to identify unsafe areas in their locality and are working with the administration to resolve the problems identified. 
 Our family counseling centers have skilled and experienced counselors who counsel and guide the aggrieved person. Our counseling process includes:1. Individual and Joint Counseling2. Home visits as and when needed3. A complete action plan to stop violence1. We have a success rate of over 58% where we have enabled the victim/survivor to meet their expectations in a relationship. 2. We have reached over 500,000 people with our message of gender equality through our play, "mulgi zali ho", "girl is born", "beti aayi hai". The play has been performed nationally and internationally. 3. We have reached 5000+ youth with over premarital workshop spreading the message of gender sensitivity and gender equality4. Our list of community counselors is now steadily increasing - we have 30+ community counselors today who step in as the first point of contact for the victim/survivor.
