If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. David Takes on Goliath (Well, pretty much…)                   14 Dec 2020‘Agni Siragu’ (= Wings of Fire) is an evocatively named signature contest of Rotary Club of Chennai Amethyst that was born this year in pandemic times.<img src="//:0" />The topic was ‘Educating a girl child to achieve her dreams’ and the contest was to make short films in two categories: ‘Short Story’ and ‘Public Service Announcement’. Each participating club was allowed two entries in both categories.Wondering how to join this very inspiring contest, I hit upon the idea of asking Uma of Suyam (Siragu Montessori School) to come up with some ideas. She went far beyond, and enlisted students and alumni to come up with two films each in both categories. The films themselves were shot on mobile on ‘zero budget’ but were straight from the heart so highly impactful.I submitted the films without much hope of making the finals as I was sure that many clubs would do a much better, higher technical quality films.It was therefore an amazing moment when Current President of Amethyst Rotarian Aeishna called me to inform that all four films were shortlisted for screening in the finals yesterday.  This school was established in 2003 to give FREE EDUCATION to the most underprivileged Children. It started with 34 kids and now student strength has gone above 500. The children primarily come from begging community, street children, bonded laborers, from single parent families and disadvantaged communities. The school accommodates 125 residential children. Books, Transport, Uniform, Food , everything is given free so that the children get education, who are the first generation learners.Attention is given not only to the children, but also to their families and their community so that the growth is holisticOur Mission:To provide the best possible education to the poor and needyDevelop &amp; deploy innovative and effective educational tools tailor made for downtrodden communitiesEndeavor to provide free education from primary till University levelTo continuously look at ways &amp; means to develop downtrodden communities 
 School has grown steadily over the years and are catering to 500+ children, who otherwise would have been begging on the streets , or been in some brick kiln as bonded laborer, or roaming in the street aimlessly drawn to criminal activities , or been subject to child marriages or sexual abuse. Now, through Suyam , they are getting quality education and can dream big.Three batches have already passed 12th standard and are into various institutions pursuing higher studies and 250 families have been rehabilitated from begging and into normal livelihood, plying autos and as vendors.
