Elderly Care

There are plenty of people who need support in the form of food, shelter and opportunities. <ul><li>These people could be elders who are no longer able to take care of themselves and there is no one willing to take care of them.</li><li>These people could be orphans who have crossed the age limit of 18 years but still are in need of support of food and shelter for a couple of years till they complete their education and get job or start earning. </li><li>These people could be Ekal Mahilas (Single Women - widow, divorcee, single mothers, unmarried women, etc. who don't have any family members and / or have small children) who need support of shelter and food for short duration till they regain their confidence and become able to take care of themselves.</li></ul>And there are institutions who provide this support. But the number of these needy people is large and the number of these institutions and their capacities is inadequate. And therefore, there is always need of homes for the needy and the destitute.

 At present our Aastha Home for the Needy is providing shelter to 4 residents. And the total number of beneficiaries is 7. However, we are confident that we have made positive meaningful change in the lives of this small number of people. For example, we will tell the story of Sunita Tai.When Sunita Tai came to live with us, with her 3 years old son, she was a very different woman - timid and unsure. Her brother and mother had come with her and were leaving her with us because they wanted a better life for her and were not able to keep her with them. When they left, she cried a lot. But within a few days, we encouraged her to start working in our Bhojanalaya (restaurant) which we run to support our home for the needy. Soon, she started enjoying the work, the friendly and healthy atmosphere of our home, and gradually became confident. And when we gave her her first salary - 3000 ₹ she was very happy. She cried again, but this time it was because she was very happy. It was perhaps the first time when she had this much money and when she alone could decide what to do with this money. She bought some sweets and clothes for her son and saved most of this money. Sunita tai went back to her village after a couple of months because we didn’t have the necessary infrastructure, but when she went back she was a confident woman, who had decided to rent a small room, to work, to earn and to take care of her son, and herself and to live a happy life. Livelihood

Swachha is a social service organization (NGO) working on issues related to cleanliness and health of the environment, sanitation, community health, child and women development and sustainable livelihoods. Through its various activities, Swachha has been trying to initiate/stimulate discussions, raise awareness, encourage people to participate in the ongoing programs related to these issues, and to find practical solutions to the problems related to these issues.Swachha also encourages and supports other individuals, social and professional organizations, and government functionaries working on similar issues.Swachha was formed on 15/08/2016 by a few friends who shared a common view that we, the people, are also responsible and hence must play our part in solving various issues faced by society. And though initially, the activities of Swachha centred around sanitation only, soon the need was felt to work on other issues also and thus Swachha started various other activities. At present the projects on which Swachha is working include - public toilets, nursing care camps, toy library, improving learning outcomes in ZP primary schools, and a helpline.And while designing and implementing all its activities, Swachha has tried to make them relevant, useful, and sustainable.
