"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. Swachha is a social service organization (NGO) working on issues related to cleanliness and health of the environment, sanitation, community health, child and women development and sustainable livelihoods. But the number of these needy people is large and the number of these institutions and their capacities is inadequate. And therefore, there is always need of homes for the needy and the destitute.

However, we are confident that we have made positive meaningful change in the lives of this small number of people. For example, we will tell the story of Sunita Tai.When Sunita Tai came to live with us, with her 3 years old son, she was a very different woman - timid and unsure. Her brother and mother had come with her and were leaving her with us because they wanted a better life for her and were not able to keep her with them. When they left, she cried a lot. But within a few days, we encouraged her to start working in our Bhojanalaya (restaurant) which we run to support our home for the needy. Soon, she started enjoying the work, the friendly and healthy atmosphere of our home, and gradually became confident. And when we gave her her first salary - 3000 ₹ she was very happy. She cried again, but this time it was because she was very happy. It was perhaps the first time when she had this much money and when she alone could decide what to do with this money. She bought some sweets and clothes for her son and saved most of this money. Sunita tai went back to her village after a couple of months because we didn’t have the necessary infrastructure, but when she went back she was a confident woman, who had decided to rent a small room, to work, to earn and to take care of her son, and herself and to live a happy life.
