For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. Swami Vivekanand Vidya Pratishthan (SVVP) is a non-profit organization established in the year 2005. It is dedicated towards working with the helpless cancer patients in Ahmednagar district through Aarambh Palliative Cancer Care Centre based at Ahmednagar. The project Aarambh is mainly working on the prevention, care and treatment of cancer. We are providing the following facilities to the cancer patients. 1. Create Awareness: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and often creates fear which comes out of ignorance and misconceptions. We strongly believe that cancer is curable, if detected early. Towards this goal, Aarambh conducts cancer awareness and exhibition programs to educate people about the key risk factors of cancer and the importance of early detection. We participate and conduct marathons, anti-tobacco programs in schools, colleges, seminars and discussions on the causes, symptoms and consequences of cancer. 2. Counselling and referral centre:India is the country where there is large number of tobacco consumers and it leads to oral cancer. The number of women having breast and ovarian cancer is also huge. Every disease shows specific symptoms at the first level. Same is the case with Cancer. Hence, we have started the counselling centre to provide individual and group counselling to the suspected patients. The pre-test and post-test counselling of the patient is very important and live changing. Aarambh networks with the organizations working for cancer patients. 3. Medical camps for cancer detection: Aarambh believes that cancer is curable, when detected at an early stage. Hence, early diagnosis of cancer has been the core objective of our cancer detection camps. They provide a complete screening of the symptomatic person in the following sequence. 1. Complete ENT examination including indirect Lasyngoscopy by the ENT surgeon 2. Complete physical checkup along with prostate examination by a surveon for men. 3. Gynaecological examination including breast checkup and pap smear by a gynaecologist for women. 4. Assistance for Treatment:We found that many patients from rural parts of Ahmednagar and from slums in the cities couldn’t afford the cost of operatives, radiation therapy, chemo-therapy, etc. Some of them can’t even consult doctors because of their heavy fees. Aarambh appeals to the donor to provide financial assistance to the poor patients admitted in various hospitals. We request the donors to pay the fees, medicinal and operational charges for the patients in concern to the hospital directly. 5. Support Group for Cancer patients: Our support groups for cancer patients help the patients in mustering up the courage needed to fight this deadly ailment. There are 5 of our support groups in the nearby towns and villages. We conduct several activities and urge the patients to take part in them. They forget the sorrows in their life for few hours and become hopeful about their future.Future Plan:Palliative Care Center:We have found many orphan patients as well as those patients who do not have any support from their families. These patients are living very miserable life. Aarambh has decided to establish such palliative center for 50 patients, where these types of patients will spend their remaining life with joy and happiness. We will provide all sorts of facilities for their further treatment and mental peace.

There are more than 100 types of cancers; almost any part of the body can be affected.The five most frequent cancers (ranking defined by total number of cases) in India in men and women are breast, cervical, oral cavity, lung and colorectal. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in India (after cardiovascular disease). Use of tobacco products (e.g. smoking cigarettes) is the most easily preventable cause of death worldwide. More women in India die from cervical cancer than in any other country. Breast cancer is the most common for of cancer in women in India and accounts for about a quarter of all cancers in women in Indian cities.The average age for breast cancer in India is almost a decade lower than that in the West. Cancers of major public health relevance such as breast, cervical, oral and colorectal cancer can be cured if detected early and treated adequately. Cancers of the oral cavit,y as well as lung cancers because of tobacco usage can be prevented.It is found that •	One woman dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes in India. •	For every 2 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, one dies of it.•	As many as 2,500 persons die everyday due to tobacco-related diseases in India.•	Smoking accounts for 1 in 5 deaths among men and 1 in 20 deaths among women, accounting for an estimated 9,30,000 deaths in 2010 .Cancer Statistics in India •	Estimated number of people living with the disease: around 2.5 million•	Every year, new cancer patients registered: over 7 lakh•	Cancer-related deaths: 5,56,400Deaths in the age group between 30-69 years •	Total: 3,95,400 (71% of all cancer related deaths)•	Men: 2,00,100•	Women: 1,95,300Cancers of oral cavity and lungs in males and cervix and breast in females account for over 50% of all cancer deaths in India.  Impact 1) Because of cancer awareness activities, preventive actions will start.2) Through home visits and counselling, a sense of acceptance will rise in family members.3) Adhar gat (support group) - Through experience and information sharing, patients' mentality towards their own ailment will change, and they will accept the situation and try to live on happily. 4) Palliative care - Last stage patients will begin to accept things as they are, and try to live the rest of their days in peace.5) More cancer patients will be identified, treated, and cured.
