But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “During a visit to a nearby village, I found two abandoned babies left to die in a cowshed. Visibly fragile and covered in dirt, the condition of the little ones left me in shock. Moved by the sight, I inquired in the area and was told that these babies were left there by their own family after they were diagnosed with HIV. I immediately brought the babies back home. This was in 2001 and that marked the beginning of a two-decade-long struggle to save abandoned HIV+ children from dying on the streets,” says 70-year-old Mangal Shah, fondly addressed as tai by her 150 adopted grandchildren. Mangaltai founded Palawi with a mission to give abandoned HIV+ children a second chance at life and, more importantly, to right the wrongs that society had done to them. For over two decades, she has rescued hundreds of children off the streets and given them the love they were denied for no fault of theirs. She has given the children life-saving medical care and education while helping them lead normal lives.“It does not cost us money to give them the love they deserve, but the cost of medical care, food, shelter, and education is more than what I can shoulder on my own and I need urgent help,” pleads Mangaltai. But Pranay is now 22 years old, he is financially independent and leading a normal life with dignity. What would have happened if I gave up on him?” Mangaltai has faced severe discrimination all along her journey with Palawi, owing to her work and for standing up for the rights of HIV+ kids. She was driven out of schools when she tried to get admissions for her children. “The discrimination against our children was such that they were not even allowed to set foot in any of the schools in this area. We were left with no choice but to start a school of our own,” says Mangaltai.The healing power of loveAccording to Mangaltai, the love that children of Palawi receive is one of the strongest factors in their recovery and healthy childhood. “We are there for these kids throughout the day. These kids have low immunity and are prone to illness. Which is why we need to be extremely cautious. We need to have regular health check-ups to ensure they are safe and healthy. But all of this comes at a cost. It also provides palliative care and financial assistance to the patients who can’t afford expensive treatment of cancer.Aarambh works for making final days of patients in their last stage satisfactory and happy. •      The average Literacy rate of Ahmednagar is 70.05.•      The average Sex ratio of Ahmednagar is 939 per 1000 males.•      In Ahmednagar the 20.09% of total population lives in Urban Area and about 79.91% population lives in Rural Area.•       Rural Area population is about 3,630,542. The average male literacy of rural area is 85.49% whereas the average female literacy is 67.85%.    Ahmednagar rural area is comparatively low in terms of the literacy ratio and the facility of medical help and that does lead to the rural area people to have improper and misleading knowledge about cancer.    The above data shows how Ahmednagar District is still working hard to raise its socio-economic background and how people are still not capable enough to take costly treatment in the case of cancer like diseases. There is no palliative care center in Ahmednagar to provide facilities of palliative care. APCCC is the only one to do so since three years. No proper human resources are also available in the city. Aarambh not only helps in guiding or providing help of money, but also from 1st stage till the last stage how a person should take his or her palliative care and be positive till the last day of their life. Mental health of the patient, his family, acquaintances is at the same time deeply affected causing them a lot of disturbance in day to day activity. APCCC provides counseling to patients as well as their families.  A.   To enlarge the network of APCCC – as soon as people hear about cancer the first thing that crosses their mind is that they are going to die. Aarambh wants to reach maximum hospitals and people so that the myth that has been carried since years could be demolished. APCCC wants to help maximum cancer patients and would aim to expand its reach.B.   Spreading awareness and sense of palliative care – people only know cancer means death because they are blind folded with zero or wrong information about cancer. Spreading proper awareness about cancer through social media, print media, and street plays etc. is Aarambh’s motive. People don’t know what palliative care is or are hardly aware about its importance. APCCC will not only provide palliative care but also spread the word that why and how it should be taken. This will open the door to other people to detect cancer as early as possible because they will be aware about its symptoms and related knowledge.C.   Imbibing positivity – Because of the proper guidance and clear idea about the disease people might fear less than before. Positivity would be more among people when they hear about cancer from cancer survivors itself.D.  Permanent counseling center and cancer helpline – Cancer affects the mind first and then the body. Aarambh wishes to put up permanent counseling center for the patients, their families and other closed ones. It will set up helpline to the people in the society who are tested positive with cancer or are doubtful about its symptoms, treatment or any necessary help.E.   APCCC support group – APCCC wishes to facilitate other groups in other cities of Maharashtra and support them in building a strong group that provides palliative care and guidance to cancer patients. Aarambh will initiate the programs and help these groups in their initial stage to start with guiding patients. It will act as a support group to other groups working in the field of cancer.

There are more than 100 types of cancers; almost any part of the body can be affected.The five most frequent cancers (ranking defined by total number of cases) in India in men and women are breast, cervical, oral cavity, lung and colorectal. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in India (after cardiovascular disease). Use of tobacco products (e.g. smoking cigarettes) is the most easily preventable cause of death worldwide. More women in India die from cervical cancer than in any other country. Breast cancer is the most common for of cancer in women in India and accounts for about a quarter of all cancers in women in Indian cities.The average age for breast cancer in India is almost a decade lower than that in the West. Cancers of major public health relevance such as breast, cervical, oral and colorectal cancer can be cured if detected early and treated adequately.  Future PlanPalliative Care Center: We have found many orphan patients as well as those patients who do not have any support from their families. These patients are living very miserable lives. Aarambh has decided to establish palliative centres for 50 such patients, where they will spend their remaining lives with joy and happiness. We will provide all sorts of facilities for their further treatment and mental peace. 
 Impact 1) Because of cancer awareness activities, preventive actions will start.2) Through home visits and counselling, a sense of acceptance will rise in family members.3) Adhar gat (support group) - Through experience and information sharing, patients' mentality towards their own ailment will change, and they will accept the situation and try to live on happily. 4) Palliative care - Last stage patients will begin to accept things as they are, and try to live the rest of their days in peace.5) More cancer patients will be identified, treated, and cured.
