For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Education:Children in the villages do not receive quality primary education and these villages don't have basic facilities for quality schools.The children have to travel long distances to the district headquarters for good schools. The drop-out rate in the villages are high. Child labour prevails in these villages as children are taken by their parents along with them to work for daily wages as they are from poor economic background. Apart from this, children who go for schools in the villages lack basic knowledge and also they don't get quality education. Frequent power cut also makes children interrupt their studies.Healthcare:Villagers lack basic facilities in healthcare. They don't have proper toilet facilities, hence they defecate in open areas. Women and girl children feel insecure as they face many difficulties. For medical facilities, villagers have to go to district headquarter for quality treatment. In the event of a medical emergency, their situation becomes very difficult. Due to their poor economic backgrounds, they are unable to spend more for medicines and for surgery (cataract). 
 Education:Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society provides quality free primary education to the children in the villages through Single Teacher Schools. A local educated youth is appointed and she enrolls children from the same village and takes classes on Tamil, English, Maths and Social Science. Classes are conducted from Monday to Saturday from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm. The performance of children is assessed through quarterly tests. Solar lamps are provided to help students study without any interruption. Monthly teachers' meeting ensures that teachers are updated about the monthly syllabus and are providing quality education. Educational aids, solar lamps and the syllabi are given to the schools. The field supervisor monitors the functioning of these schools and reports to the headquarter. Inspection teams from office monitors both school activities and field supervisor activities.Healthcare:Toilets and bathrooms are built in the villages for the poor and needy people, ensuring a cleaner environment. Monthly free medical camps and eye camps are conducted with support from corporates. Free medicines are given to villagers. In the eye camps, villagers are provided with free spectacles and are also provided free cataract surgery. 
 Children are able to read and write fluently. Illiteracy, child labour and drop-outs are eradicated. Children are provided with quality education and are made to realise the value of education to create a strong platform for their higher studies. As the school is being run in their own village, they show keen interest in learning as many of their hardships are nullified and they continue their education. They mingle with each other to develop companionship which gives them the feeling of oneness with no caste conflicts. Teachers have gained respect from the villagers as they have gained popularity amongst the villagers. The self-esteem of teachers has risen. As 95% of our teachers are women, this leads to women empowerment. Their life standards have changed and their approach towards the community is very positive. Their communication has improved, where they regularly communicate with Panchayat heads and with the villagers and thus their confidence level is high. Value based education in classes has created a huge change in the families of students, where many fathers have shed their drinking habits. Parents are very happy upon seeing their children respecting them and the elderly people. Cleanliness in the villages have been maintained which has created a healthy atmosphere in the villages. Students have started indulging in extracurricular activities.

Even after 74 years of independence, Education remains a distant dream for millions of children in India, those in rural and remote areas are deprived of Primary Education. Considering the magnitude of poverty and illiteracy, it is the responsibility to address these issues and improve the quality of life of the children in rural areas through education. In Tamil Nadu, though there are Government Schools in most villages, the drop outs ratio is also high. Villages and tiny hamlets in the remotest corners of Tamil Nadu have no access to proper roads. Hence, Education has to be taken to the doorsteps of the children. Such a step will improve the overall literacy rate and ensure that every child, irrespective of the background, will get good Education which alone will alter the destiny of the children, leading to self-sustenance and economic liberation. To ensure all village children are provided free quality primary education, Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society has established Single Teacher Schools in 1057 villages of Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Ranipet, Coimbatore, Vellore, Thiruvarur, Thiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapatinam districts in educating village children. 
 Identifying educated women from the village and training her as teacher. Children between the age group of 5 and 12 years are enrolled and classes from 1st to 5th std are conducted. The schools runs between 5.30pm to 8.30pm. The curriculum includes Tamil, English, Maths and Science which is based on State Board Syllabus. Classes are conducted from Monday to Saturday every week. Children are also taught value based education, discipline, hygiene and elementary yoga with the focus of character building. Every school is provided with Blackboard, Solar Lamp, Syllabus, Notebooks, Library books, Educational charts, Pencil, Chalk Magic Slate, Eraser, Medical Kit and Sports kit. Monthly teachers meeting is conducted in which teachers are trained and updated in the monthly syllabus. Annual training is also conducted as 3 day program. Special training is provided for teachers where guest speakers are invited and share their knowledge with teachers. 
 Village children are enrolled in the schools and given quality primary education. The children are able to Read, Write without any difficulties, all the children of Single Teacher Schools are given Quality Primary Education. As the school is run in their own village, they show keen interest in learning as many of their hardship is nullified and they continue their education without dropouts. They mingle with each other, develop companionship which gives them the feeling of oneness with no Caste conflict.  With the advent of Single Teacher Schools in the villages the village women are provided employment. They are self employed.   She commands respect among villagers by virtue of her conduct. Teachers (Women) Self-esteem has raised as our 95% of Teachers are women leading to Women Empowerment.
