Extremely high maternal and newborn mortality is observed in the Adivasi-dominated Thuamul Rampur block of Kalahandi district in Odisha, India. Some of the contributing factors include:·         Lack of awareness on the importance of antenatal(before-birth) care·         Lack of availability and accessibility of good quality antenatal care services·         Lack of transportation facilities and infrastructure·         Low levels of literacy·         Gross poverty- 97% live below poverty line.·         Dysfunctional and unorganized community based institutions and schemes.

Reducing Maternal and Infant mortality through community empowerment, initiatives and participation.

Swasthya Swaraj is working in 76 villages of Thuamul Rampur block of Kalahandi district of Odisha. These villages are predominantly tribal populated. The important health indicators of any region include those of the most vulnerable groups, particularly women and children. The infant mortality rate is 107 per 1000 births and 62% of this high mortality is because of high newborn mortality. Early marriage, illiteracy, absence of health education and antenatal care facilities are important causes for this. Malaria is the number one killer in the region. 42% school children tested positive for malaria in mass screening. 50% of the underfive children are underweight and 60% of children are stunted. Prevalence of TB is also high in this area. Lacks of infrastructures - roads, public transport facilities and communication, have been major hindrances in allowing development to take place in this block. The geographical terrain is thickly forested and hilly, restricting reach to the interior areas. 
 1) Run 24/7 health clinics in remote villages (Kaniguma and Kerpai)2) Organise outreach health camps for pregnant women and children in far villages 3) Training of at least one woman per village as the village health worker and training of traditional birth attendants 4) Community health awareness activities with the help of community mobilisation and meetings 5) Training of educated tribal girls (minimum class 12) as community health practitioners under diploma in community health practice in local setting, in collaboration with Centurion university, Bhubaneswar 6) Health promotion as an initiative to improve education, health and nutrition in 15 government primary schools in 2 gram panchayats 7) Wholistic empowerment programme for tribal adolescent girls (TULSI programme) 8) Setting up community based nutrition centres (Gaon Poshan Gharo) for management of severe acute malnutrition in children in 10 locations. 
 Improved health seeking behavior is evident by the number of persons attending the out-patient department at the health centers. The numbers have increased from 120-150 per month in 2014 to 1200-1500 per month in 2017. Detection of malaria in its early stages has increased by 60%. The organizations’ health centers are the only two in the block equipped to manage medical emergencies such as severe malaria. The health centres have saved many lives. How were your school days? Some of us often wish we could go back to those days. Why is that? Was it because we had a carefree life back then?Most of us can relate to the following scenario. You are 8 years old and your teacher has planned a fun activity for the class today. For the next day, you have made plans with your friends to play kabaddi during the game’s hour. During lunch break, the students share their tiffin and enjoy a healthy meal. As the school day comes to an end, the children count the seconds until the last bell rings. The bell goes off, bags are flung over the shoulders and the little people bolt out of their classroom, running towards the school buses. The premises are filled with laughter.Now, imagine yourself in the following scenario. You are 8 years old. Although there is a school building in your village, you are unsure if you will have classes today. The only sound heard from the school premises is silence. The nearest functional school is hard to reach for you due to the lack of transportation facilities.The stark contrast in these two scenarios is precisely the problem our programme is addressing on the ground. A stable primary education becomes a foundation on which an individual is able to develop their skills. As per the Right to Education Act,2009, education is a fundamental right of every child. However, not all children in our programme areas are able to complete their primary education. 
 	Swasthya Swaraj is focused on improving the educational, health and nutritional outcomes of children in 14 government primary schools in Kalahandi, Odisha. This is done with the cooperation of the district education and health department. The means of our process is as follows; -<ul><li>Our Shiksha Sathis – they are the key enablers of our programme, instrumental in the grassroot level implementation. The shiksha sathis are literate youth from the local communities, who are trained as educators by our organisation. They encourage the students to come to school and support them throughout the year, using creative teaching materials that make the process of learning a joy for the students.</li><li>Incorporation of activity-based teaching in classrooms, making the process of learning more enjoyable and stimulating.</li><li>Regular engagements with the communities, school management committees and the education department to promote uninterrupted teaching and learning in the schools.</li><li>Regular training of the shiksha sathis on updated teaching processes and materials.</li><li>Development of nutritional gardens on the school premises. The children are taught to tend to the garden and it acts as a teaching medium.</li><li>Regular health check-ups to monitor the health and development status of the children.</li></ul>Enable children to become agents of change in their communities.
