For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. It is unfortunate that the 3rd wave of coronavirus is now growing towards the peak moment by the end of February 2022. This 3rd wave is mostly affecting the children and youth mass. Odisha is the poorest state and more and more youth migrate to different cities like Surat, Mumbai, Chennai, etc. The government of Odisha has already taken steps to declare containment zones which are increasing day to day as quantified. The lockdown, because of joblessness, financial crisis, absence of resources, unaffordability of health facilities, etc. During the last two years, the schools have already closed and Government has started online classes. But it is a fact that the rural and tribal children are being deprived of getting this opportunity due to the lack of android mobiles, inaccessibility of the internet etc. And even most of the rural and tribal people who are daily wage earners are unable to feed their children, provide cloth, medicine and reading materials. Hence our organization plans to take the education, health and clothing risks of more than 4000 children of our region-Odisha state. We propose to make aware of the covid protocols, educate the children as well as their parents, Organize regular education classes by our volunteers with covid protocols, mobilize the vaccines for the children, provide clothes and educational materials up to the end of the Covid pandemic.
