The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Many children face neglect, with parents consumed by substance abuse, leaving them to fend for themselves. As Asha explains, "Bare basics like food, shelter, and clothing are not available. "She wanted to study but was being forced into child marriage," Asha shares. Magic Bus intervened, rallying the women in the village to stop the wedding. "We told them this girl is a child herself. The wedding was canceled, and the girl continued her education.According to Asha, children from villages have a burning desire to study and make a successful life for themselves but very rarely do these dreams come true. "There is a boy in our programme. Despite being alone, he studies, does all the housework, and looks after his younger siblings," Asha recounts. When his parents tried to take him and his siblings to work at a brick kiln, the boy resisted, saying, "I want to study and I want my young siblings to study as well."Why Education MattersEducation is the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Tarunya Foundation is a registered non-profit based in Tamil Nadu, dedicated to empowering rural youth to lead change in their own lives and communities. We work in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts, where many first-generation graduates face unemployment, lack of direction, and social barriers despite holding degrees.Our flagship Vriksham Youth Leadership Program (VYLP) is a one-year immersive journey for rural college students, combining career exploration, life skills, emotional resilience, and mentorship. Designed through direct consultations with youth, parents, employers, and community members, the program addresses both technical and non-technical aspects of life—helping youth step beyond “just following the crowd” to make informed choices, take on leadership roles, and contribute to community upliftment.We believe in a participatory, bottom-up approach where change is owned by the community.
