I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. India is currently facing one of the worst educational crises in the world. Today, not every child enrolls in school and less than 10% graduate from school and enter college. Most of those who are in school do not get an excellent education – one that truly maximizes their potential and gives them the opportunities to do what they want to do and be who they want to be.Teach For India is a non-profit organization that believes in an excellent education for all children and is striving to end the problem of educational inequity in our country. In the short-term, through our Fellowship program, we provide an opportunity for India’s brightest and most promising individuals to serve as full-time teachers to children from low-income communities in some of the nation’s most under-resourced schools. Their classroom becomes a platform for leadership learning and they strive to ensure that every child maximizes his or her potential. Fellows provide their students with opportunities to grow in academics and develop values and mind-sets. This growth is measured through regular internal and external assessments.Through this experience of teaching in classrooms and working with key education stakeholders like students, principals, and parents - our Fellows get exposed to the grassroot realities of India’s education system and begin to cultivate the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to identify their role in building a larger movement for equity in education.We received 1200 applications when we first started operations with the 2009-11 Fellowship program. This number has grown to over 15,000 for the 2016-18 cohort with a selectivity rate between 6-8.5%. Today, we have 1250 Fellows impacting over 45000 Children Across 7 Cities - Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai &amp; Bangalore. There is an almost 50:50 ratio split between those who join from an academic background vs. those who come with professional work experience.In the long-term, we build and support a powerful force of Alumni, who informed by their experiences and insights, work towards affecting systemic changes to realize educational opportunity for all. Our Alumni work in diverse roles within the education sector - as teachers, teacher-trainers, school principals, curriculum designers and education policy researchers as well as in the ecosystem surrounding and supporting the education sector - as journalists, lawyers, health experts, entrepreneurs and corporate leaders.Currently, we have 2500 Alumni, approximately 57% of our which remain within the education sector. They all collectively continue to work towards Teach For India’s vision that one day, all children will attain an excellent education!

India is facing a crisis in Education. 55% of ten-year-olds in the country cannot read a basic text; the pandemic has only exacerbated this.Over the last two years, most Indian students faced full and partial school closures. With every month of school closure leading to two months of learning loss, Indian students have lost up to 1.5 years of learning.As schools open, there is an urgent need for Students to reverse the learning loss they have suffered from and reach the levels of their current grades, i.e., a grade six student needs to catch up on over two years of learning to understand the syllabus of a grade six classroom. Reversing this learning loss is a priority - yet still not enough to bridge the huge learning gap and secure the future of India's children. We need to get our children back to grade-level learning after two years of interrupted education. 
 At Teach For India, we believe leadership for education is the solution to this crisis. We are building a movement of leaders who will eliminate educational inequity in India. Started in 2009, the Fellowship is an opportunity for India's brightest and most promising people, from the nation's best universities and workplaces, to serve as full-time teachers to children from low-income communities in some of the nation's most under-resourced schools for two years. Through two years of teaching and working with key education stakeholders, our Fellows are exposed to the grassroots realities of India's education system. Through their work, Fellows cultivate the knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed to attain leadership positions in and beyond education, working collectively to build a vibrant movement for educational equity across India. 
 We at Teach For India are working towards an ambitious vision - 'One day, all children will attain an excellent education.' Our recent efforts have led to significant impact, which we want to sustain over this academic year:Improved access to learning - During the pandemic, 94% of students had access to devices, and teaching hours have doubled since last year, even when school closures were unpredictable and erratic.Learning continued even in the Pandemic: ~70% of Students have grown or maintained their English Grade Reading levels through the pandemic. 65% of secondary school Students have increased absolute Math scores in the past six months. This means Teach For India Students have stagnated the increase in learning losses and largely managed to stay at the same pre-pandemic levels.A scaling Alumni Movement - 71% of our Fellow Alumni stay in the Education and Development sector. Our 4000+ Alumni impact 33 million children in India.Now more than ever, we need our Fellows in our classrooms to deliver the vision of excellent education we have set out for and make sure all our students can understand and learn at the grade levels they should be.
