For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Her husband manages their small piece of land and works in a coconut mandi in Tiptur to make ends end meet. “My husband used to work in coconut mandi in Tiptur and came home quite late. As our land holding is small, I had to find a way to bring in more income into the house” says Kalpana.She was making and selling ragi papads without much success. She participated in a ragi value-addition training conducted by TIDE where she learnt about value added products such as ragi malt and nipattu. She also understood other important aspects like quality, compliance for food grade, packaging, and marketing. She used this knowledge to reduce her production costs and improve her profit margin. In her words “We were taught why packaging our products is important and were also shown different materials that can be used and were told where we can buy them from. We were introduced to equipment like sealing machines and electronic scales.”She got the FSSAI licensing for her production unit and displays this registration number on all her product packaging. This, along with neat packaging and labelling, helped her get repeat orders. Today Kalpana manufactures several ragi based products like papad, malt, hurihittu, savouries like chakli and nipattu. “Ragi is a simple grain traditionally consumed in rural areas but these food items like papad, ragi malt and savouries have a good demand in urban areas and if we can tap into that this can be a profitable business” says Kalpana.Her business has grown and she now employs 3 women from her village to help her. Her husband manages the procurement of raw ingredients, marketing and delivery of finished products.Consistent quality and perseverance are keys to Kalpana’s success. She says she strives to maintain the quality of her products and never delays orders. Through such efforts she has managed to gain regular orders from retail and wholesale businesses across Tiptur town.She recalls how her entrepreneurship journey with TIDE provided her knowledge, skills, and linkages like opportunity to participate in various exhibitions and events in Bengaluru and other cities.While she is grateful for the support, she stresses on how important it is for the women to put in effort and most importantly not give up midway. There are approximately 7 crore rural households living below the poverty line in India. With COVID, women are bearing the brunt of the economic and social fallout of COVID-19 and youth have lost employment opportunities and returned home. In TIDE's experience, many women and youth from these households are entrepreneurial, have strong survival instincts and a deep desire to come out from their cycle of poverty. However, the infrastructure and institutional mechanisms required for creating, nurturing, and sustaining micro-enterprises in rural areas are not fully in place. Livelihood opportunities need to be expanded and diversified. Additionally, aspiring entrepreneurs face social and cultural barriers which need to be addressed. 
 TIDE’s work in technology based micro-entrepreneurship for rural communities  has proven to be a successful model in this area. TIDE's Women's Technology Park (WTP) , a 2-acre residential training centre, is a hub for these activities.Over 2,500 women have been trained in livelihood skills by TIDE, covering various technologies and set up farm based and non-farm-based enterprises. TIDE has also encouraged rural entrepreneurs to set up digital Kiosks to provide common digital services and help youth to explore various entrepreneur opportunities. Apart from technical skills, TIDE is also helping entrepreneurs by training in marketing, labelling, packaging, building SOPs and business plans.TIDE is also providing infrastructure, licensing, and software support to carry out entrepreneur activities. Help rural women earn incomes through home-based food businesses

The Model School Program aims to empower children and prepare them for rapidly changing environment and the complexities that come with it.Menstrual hygiene is a matter of human rights – but we find that the children we engage with lack access to both information and products to meet this basic need.Almost 19% of girls are unaware of menstruation cycles. This translates to almost one in five girls, most of whom also have little to no access to safe, affordable feminine hygiene.We want to make a systemic change by providing awareness, accessible menstrual products, and a means for responsible disposal of menstrual waste.Good menstrual hygiene and responsible disposal will enable these young girls to reach their full potential and become environmentally conscious .With your donations one girl can be equipped with sanitary napkins for an entire year and prevent negative impact on their education, health, safety, and human development. 
 To effectively manage their menstruation TIDE wants to ensure that children have access to affordable and appropriate menstrual hygiene materials, information on good practices, and a supportive environment where they can manage menstruation without the embarrassment or stigma. TIDE has already installed incinerators in these schools for safe and hygienic disposal of sanitary napkins. This will ensure that the waste gets converted into ash and other non-hazardous residue. 
 TIDE is looking to raise enough money to cover the cost of a year’s supply of good quality sanitary napkins for the girls of GKHTPS school and Bilishivale school - 120 girls in total. These schools cater to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, ethnic minorities etc and face financial constraints to purchase it themselves.In addition, we want include a children’s manual on menstrual awareness and hygiene that includes illustrations and storylines that convey all they need to know about menstruation and lift the taboo that surrounds menstruation through education.TIDE has already installed incinerators in the restroom facilities of these schools. They are designed to be user friendly, safe and effective in disposing of the menstrual waste.The schools lack the resources to create awareness on menstrual hygiene among its staff and students alike. TIDE will be inviting experts to conduct sessions for each school to sensitize them about menstruation, breaking gender stereotypes and norms.The menstruation kits will provide the girls with the resources they need to attend school regularly and maintain normalcy in their lives.

Making rural women self-reliant through entrepreneurship

TIDE is poised for growth with its proven expertise in technology and sustainability. Our focus areas of Sustainable communities and Livelihoods are getting good traction, from CSR, carbon credit funders, etc. Recently we have worked on a strategic business plan and are looking at building a strong leadership to deliver on them. TIDE is looking for an Executive Director replacement after our incumbent Executive Director had to relocate to Singapore. We can attract good candidates, but the salary expectation is 24LPA + while TIDE’s budget is capped at 18LPA leaving us with about 6-8 L gap in funding.To build on essential roles like communication, TIDE wants to support and train its dedicated staff. We have identified an agency to do capacity building in communication across the organization. Unfortunately, project funders do not support these activities and it would help TIDE to be funded on this to strengthen their funding pitch. The salary and a communication workshop need a budget of 7L.  
 With the funding we receive we will be able to meet the demands of suitable candidates capable of running the organization and ensuring its steady growth and progress.With the funding received we will be conducting a few workshops covering communications and strategic project management. 
 With this position filled, along with a strong strategic and operational team, TIDE should be able to demonstrate greater impact. The incoming candidate for Executive Direcotr would be able to grow the organization and support the salaries. We can up our game on communication, crucial for fundraising and showcasing impact. It would also strengthen our funding pitches moving forward. This will add to the fundraising capacity and the expectation is that increased funds will cover this cost in the future.
