I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. There are many children, especially those of itinerant workers, who cannot afford even the meagre school fees to continue their education. For some students, their parents simply do not see the need. These laborers are paid periodically based on the number of days worked, and it is common for paymasters to cheat them by paying less than what they actually deserve. For laborers who do not know how to count, it is quite easy to get scammed. 
 Tender Heart has opened an after-school program to help reach the needs of these children. Any child who shows up is given basic education in mathematics, reading, writing, and English language. This program is helpful to people of all ages, as the children are encouraged to help their fathers calculate the payments due to them. 
 The school began over 15 years ago on a piece of unoccupied land in rural India, adjacent to a village which did not have any schools. Initially, the school we set up was not welcomed by the residents of this area. Parents saw no value in having their children (especially their daughters) spending time in a classroom rather than working on family land. We stood firm in the face of threats and started teaching children. Now, the school is an important part of what is still a poor community.

Rural Children Education

School is not an option for all children due to the nomadic life of their parents. As a result, these children get involved in begging &amp; anti-social activities. They have no option to avail any education which leads them to beg for food. They also don't have opportunities for cleanliness and hygiene which are basic necessities. They are often malnourished and lack basic three healthy meals leading to illnesses and various ailments. Facing the harsh weather is a challenge without shoes and proper clothing which again leads to multiple health problems. We would like to hold vaccination camps for children just as we have been holding for adults for the COVID 19 vaccination. 
 Children are brought from the near-by slums and are provided with food, clothing, stationery, hygiene products - soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste etc &amp; are given education in a non-formal way through storytelling, games, fun activities by the volunteers from various universities national &amp; international.  Vaccination and COVID 19 protocol awareness camps will be held for the children. 
 <ol><li>Overall development of slum children in terms of personality &amp; basic knowledge.</li><li>Reduced involvement in other anti-social activities.</li><li>Nutritional deficiencies are taken care of.</li><li>The slum children get encouraged to enter into the nearby government schools as they develop interest in education.</li><li>Basic health and hygiene are secured.</li><li>COVID 19 vaccination camps will protect the children from the deadly virus. Awareness camps will help them to maintain safety protocols and also create awareness in their surrounding areas. </li></ol>

We, at Tender Heart, are guided by the principle that empowerment is not a standalone movement. The process of empowerment is interdependent and reciprocal. It derives its strength from the society itself. So, when we empower the women it results in empowering the differently abled individuals. Similarly empowering differently abled persons automatically empowers women too.This project as one of the unique programs is creating a substantial impact on the lives of differently abled &amp; rural underprivileged women. Problem: Differently abled individuals face many difficulties finding employment due to lack of proper guidance, support, education and skill development. The condition in rural India is even worse due to lack of awareness &amp; social taboo. On the other hand, underprivileged rural women including school dropout girls, destitute women face lot of atrocities and daily struggles of livelihood. A substantial proportion of rural women are trapped within the four walls of patriarchy, poverty, illiteracy and inequality. There is a dire need to empower the differently abled and rural women to counter this menance and empower them financially. 
 Tender Heart NGO is striving to make the differently abled individuals and underprivileged rural women work in an inclusive environment enhancing each other’s skills and thus producing varied products i.e., the handloom fabric being woven by these differently abled is given a shape into a variety of products such as home décor &amp; furnishings, clothing &amp; apparel etc.
