“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. In addition to staples like rice, wheat, oil and vegetables, they also hand out protein and micronutrient enriched supplements for chronically undernourished children and pregnant women. The colourful cloth masks made by our women artisans of Bagh, Jhabua, Patangarh, Kotpad and Basvanbigha in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar are being distributed to those who need them most.We need to keep the relief supply chain moving, not only in Jharkhand but in states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orrisa and Telangana, where our Foundation’s artisan-clusters are playing a transformative role. Heart, Head and Healing is a pioneering initiative by the Asian Heritage Foundation, launched during the apocalyptic 2004 Tsunami Disaster to provide urgent relief to the survivors and latter to ameliorate the plight of flood-ravaged communities across Kashmir in 2014. The unprecedented threat to daily wage workers brought on by this pandemic has demanded a revival of this initiative that has been extended to artisan communities across India.The artisanal communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are struggling to survive. Their livelihoods have been completely destroyed, and the rural economy that supports them has plunged into a coma. For these artisan communities, nothing matters more than reclaiming their home-based workspaces.Help us minimize the risks these brave COVID Hunger Warriors have to face. 
 Setting up Community Kitchens operated by JIYO Mahila Mandals in Gumla and Hazaribagh in Jharkhand to provide fresh and nutritious meals to 4000 families daily. Distributing Rations and Sanitary Products to artisan communities across India and construction and brick kiln laborers and families of landless agricultural workers, who are out of the Public Distribution System orbit. Distributing Micronutrient Supplements for chronically undernourished infants and children. We are making special dry food packets using locally sourced micronutrients in Gumla and Hazaribagh, where access to critical nutritives are limited. This fortified micronutrient supplement is made of ragi, soyabean, jaggery, split chickpea and edible oil. Producing Cloth Masks : Entrepreneurial groups of women, part of our crafts clusters in Bagh, Jhabua and Patangarh in Madhya Pradesh, Kotpad in Odisha and Basvanbigha in Bihar and Gumla and Hazaribagh in Jharkhand are producing cloth masks for distribution to the extremely vulnerable clusters in their blocks and ASHA workers in their communities. 
 We are immensely proud of our Covid Hunger Warriors who have been plugging the blind spots in the government's relief work by traveling long distances, mostly by foot, to reach out to the most vulnerable children, women, the old and the disabled.So far, we have provided rations to over 750 families of artisans in Kathputli Colony, New Delhi and over 40 Manganiyar families in suburban Jaisalmer. Currently, we are mobilizing community kitchens and ration distribution systems at rural artisan cluster groups in Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha which will help these communities meet their basic survival needs and improve their access to crafts-based value chains.Our goal is to feed these families in artisan communities across the country. There are approximately 4000 families in need of urgent support. Join us, as we continue to track the risks to the clusters through our nutrition and morbidity monitoring systems.

COVID Hunger Warriors - Heart Head Healing

Several vulnerable communities in the Tribal Belt of India share a linguistic heritage that is fast disappearing. From Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands to even Assam, the languishing dialects of Sadri, Nagpuri, Sadani are widely spoken. These indigenous mother tongues have rarely been taught in formal education environments. The result is the adulteration of ancient dialects. Furthermore, the geographical variation of domicile speakers has increased along with the loss of cohesive language transmission. While these dialects are spoken in pockets throughout the country, a lack of formal learning has created a vacuum in the way Sadri-speaking communities interact with each other. At present, Sadri- speaking scholars may have completely different vocabularies than a Sadri community singer. Fast disappearing repositories of spoken cultures mean a loss of livelihoods for performers whose numbers have never been mapped. To this end, the Asian Heritage Foundation’s HHH (Heart Head Healing) Campaign has been supporting indigenous artists left without work with innovative discourse and relief measures. The creative community in these areas thrive on rural patronage, which has been grossly affected by the pandemic. 
 The Foundation will:<ul><li>Facilitate and support skill and talent mapping in the sector</li><li>Conduct Gunijan training Workshops to enable local programming and Master Classes for schools and colleges</li><li>Provide appropriate hardware and software to inform and equip local artisans</li><li>Commission original content through poets and folk historians for knowledge preservation</li><li>Create a forum for sharing creative content at a local level</li><li>Structure Pedagogy for School and College classrooms through interdisciplinary and informed curricula with performing artists</li><li>Create awareness on Jharkhand’s creative community through print and social media</li></ul> 
 The proposed series of workshops on strategies to preserve linguistic heritage of Sadri, Nagpuri and Sadani dialects will achieve the following objectives:<ul><li>The workshops will support language development and music training sessions to bring together previously siloed speakers of Sadri, Nagpuri and Sadani. The workshops will become a forum for discussion on the different dialects that have developed and how a cohesive vocabulary may be formed.</li><li>Schools will benefit from songs, storytelling, drama, people’s history and new literature in their mother tongue, which is unavailable in present school curricula.</li><li>Revitalizing these dialects will result in livelihood generation for the various communities of singers, poets and artists in the area.</li></ul>
