For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. It is time we make a difference to the marginalized section of the society (90% of the beneficiaries at AMC are from families belonging to the economic weaker section and low-income groups). This is an opportunity to address a serious problem in society as there is a rise in the number of people suffering from various mental health disorders in India, which is of grave concern. AMC has children who require food and nutrition care to ensure they are physically and mentally active. We are right now struggling to keep a balance of the requirements within the income available and we are now eating out of the corpus since the prices have all gone up in the last decade. The crying need to support the differently abled children and help them find a life for themselves is increasing day by day. Our earnest request is to help us find the resources needed to make this happen. We will fail in our endeavour if people and corporates do not support us. Because of financial constraint, we are also not able to increase the reach out to more children. 
 Founded in 1960 by Dr D. L.N. Murthy Rao, AMC is the oldest institution working for 5 decades to address the special needs of the intellectually challenged individuals and their families throughout their life cycle. Today AMC supports about 180 children, adolescents, adults and their families. AMC’s aim is to educate, train and rehabilitate intellectually challenged persons and empower their families. The Association runs Akruti, a special school for mentally challenged children between 4 and 16. Besides classroom instruction, the school's activities include yoga, painting, craft and art. Pragati is a multi-category vocational center for mentally challenged adolescents and adults training in weaving, candle making, pottery and carpentry. The effort here is to fully utilise the capacities of the intellectually challenged individuals to be economically productive. Sanskriti is a sheltered workshop which offers gainful employment to mentally challenged adults who have acquired vocational skills at Pragati. Recognising the difficulty for the intellectually disabled persons to enter the mainstream job market, AMC is providing a protected and supportive work environment to help them discover a life that is self -governing.Other activities like music therapy, special education, teacher training are also offered. 
 The number of years that this Institution has been running for is itself speaking for the impact. Corporates like Bosch have supported us through their CSR. AMC is a member of Federation for the Welfare of the Mentally Retarded (India), The National Trust and Pariwar. With the continued co-operation from the Central and State Government, Social Welfare Board and the general public, AMC’s children and trainees participate in various national and international level competitions and have won AMC in 2009 The Best Institution by His Excellency, the Governor of Karnataka, and by Rotary for its excellent service to the society. It is a one-of-a-kind institution providing lifelong support for the intellectually challenged and working with the principal goal to improve the quality of life of intellectually challenged persons and their families.

Meal for children and nutrition for their growth

It is approximated that 2% of the Indian Population is suffering from various types of mental illness making it a pressing issue to be addressed. NGO’s like AMC have an important role to play in caring for these individuals. AMC lends various kinds of services to the intellectually challenged children &amp; adults. In order to make it a holistic approach towards caring for these individuals, AMC makes an humble attempt to handhold the families of these individuals and empower them. Through AMC Special School the special needs such as learning disabilities, communication disorders, emotional and behavioural disorders, physical disabilities and developmental disabilities are addressed. This helps in the child’s overall development. Each classroom is comprised of students with varying needs. These students need a curriculum tailored to his/her individual development needs. The special school enables this through its specially designed class room sessions. 
 The education of intellectually challenged children has to be in a way that takes into consideration the particular needs of the child and understanding the limitations. AMC Special School addresses this need through its specially designed classroom sessions. Children are aided in their development through workshops in creative fields like dance, music, painting and crafts, sports and physical training. They are provided support through physiotherapy, speech therapy and periodic evaluation to monitor the development of each child. There is constant upgrading of the teaching techniques, assessment methods and tools to monitor progress. AMC gives these children a conducive environment, to ensure that despite the challenges they are facing in their lives, these children get to experience happy space at AMC. AMC ensures that these children participate in various Sports and Cultural events across Bangalore and outside providing an excellent platform for them to interact with others. Yoga therapy provides relief to the children with behavioral problems and asana help them with their digestive process as well as mobility functions. Children are served milk, ragi porridge with vitamin supplements in the morning and healthy nutritious meal for lunch. Children are also given two sets of uniforms and two pairs of shoes. 
 The support will enable disbursement of Special Education to Special children belonging to the lower- economic background. The project will improve each student’s educational experience and ensure successful learning, advocating independence among these children in carrying out daily routine such as dressing, personal hygiene, safety, handling money &amp; day to day decision making, etc., thereby unburdening the parents/caregivers. It also teaches behavior that is appropriate and acceptable by the society which goes a long way in boosting the self-confidence of the child &amp; help facilitate a better integration into the society.

Support a child for life skill development

The Vocational Training Centre of AMC is serving the purpose of occupational therapy and rehabilitation of adults with intellectual development disorder (IDD). This center is serving the most crucial needs of the families and the society to include them in the main stream of economic activity. With limitations related to comprehension, vocabulary, ability to read and write, they are to be trained in simple manual activities.  
 The multi category vocational training center at AMC has two sections- one in which is adults with IDD (women and men) are trained in variety of vocations like weaving, candle making, needle work, tailoring, paper products, etc. They get small amount as monthly stipend. About 50 persons are currently being trained. Those who have been trained at for a certain period of tome and are able to work with minimum supervision are put under Sheltered workshop programme, Here bulk production of few items by order is undertaken. They get monthly stipend as incentive. There have been bulk orders for envelopes, greeting cards, Diwali gift boxes, candles, diyas, paper bags, cloth pouches, wooden puzzles, clay pots etc. on regular basis.  
 Vocational training and job placement is one of the major issues in the rehabilitation of persons with IDD. Any gainful occupation by a person with disability leads to economic rehabilitation and empowerment. Individuals with IDD learn when trained systematically and perform repetitive tasks effectively, which are routine, without day-to-day variation. They perform well in situations that are non-threatening to them and are comfortable when the situation does not demand problem solving every day. They carry out tasks with sincerity. AMC’s Vocational Training Centre is filling this gap and making its humble contribution since 1973. This rehabilitation programme through vocational training has helped them in building confidence, developing self-esteem and overall feeling of empowerment.

Support an Adult for Vocational Training

An estimated 2% of world’s population have an IQ of 70 and less. They belong to all social groups. Those that are suffering with IDD have delayed development and difficulties in coping with the social demands appropriate to their age. Some of them suffer from severe IDD requiring constant care and support. 
 The Day Care Centre at AMC takes care of 10 individuals with severe intellectual disability disorder. They are looked after by the trained staff and engaged through various activities related to occupational therapy. 
 The burden of the families are shared and a safety place is provided for their children to be looked after.
