“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Spandan School for Mentally Challenged, Karelibaug run and managed by The Banyan City Jaycees Education Trust since 1975 is the oldest and by far the largest institute working for the growth and development of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in Vadodara. It is a centre providing all necessary services for the growth and development of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (IIDs) under one roof. Here Therapy, Education and Training are provided with a single-point focus on making the students reach their highest possible potential. Currently, Spandan has more than 200 students and almost 45 staff members including Teachers, Trainers, Therapists, Support staff, etc and also provides services like Counseling and Transportation for its students. The students are encouraged to participate in all competitions within Baroda and outside and special focus is given to Sports involvement for Special Olympics &amp; Khel Mahakumbh.

We call ourselves evolved and modern, but individuals with intellectual disabilities are still not treated as equal. They often find themselves in isolation and are not part of mainstream society. While empathy is seen towards them amongst modern, educated members of society, individuals with a disability still face exclusion from jobs and social life. Individuals from lower socio-economic groups are also seen as a burden on their families due to the inability to secure a livelihood. 
 As a part of making these individuals an able part of society, the Spandan School for Mentally Challenged was incorporated in 1975. What started as a small institution with 5 children has now grown, in 48 years, into an integrated facility covering the needs of approximately 200 individuals with Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Autism, Intellectual disability and many more. We aim to provide an education system combined with various therapies such as Speech &amp; Communication, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Sensory integration therapy to all individuals that are enrolled within the institution from time to time. Spandan also strives to make adult individuals groomed and self-reliant to be able to find jobs and earn a livelihood in local industrial settings. Our collective aim is to grow and maintain the institution, and to continue to make a difference in the life of every child and adult with an intellectual disability.  
 With our endeavour, we wish to see every member of Spandan find inclusion in community life. We want every intellectually disabled member to be openly welcomed and included in all aspects of our society. We want these individuals to receive support (in terms of education, therapy, finding jobs, etc) and whatever else that may be required to become part of mainstream society. We want to unburden the parents by being their active partners in the growth and development of their children. We want our adult children to be engaged in meaningful work in an inclusive setting.
