“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. <h1>December AP (Nellore) &amp; TN (Chengalpattu)</h1>Reporting Period: 14th to 20th December 2023 (First Seven Days) Activities Carried out during the Reporting Period:  1.  Beneficiary Selection: The EFICOR team has deputed five staff in both locations (3 in Chengalpettu and 2 in Nellore) to carry out to expedite the emergency response as per the proposed plan. The team identified 1500 HHs in Chengalpettu and 500 families in Nellore who belong to the neediest and most vulnerable who were directly affected by the cyclone impact to provide unconditional cash of Rs.2000 each and basin hygiene materials to protect from waterborne diseases. During the beneficiary selection, the excluded community members such as people with disability, low-income families, widows, old age, and women-headed families were given priority. 2.Government Linkages: The relief team made a good rapport with the local govt. before starting the relief intervention and obtaining the letter of support from the Block Administration (Tehsildar), Thiruporur block of Chengalpettu, and ITDA Nellore &amp; Line department to work in Kovur block of Nellore districts respectively. The initial beneficiaries’ lists were collected from the assistant village officer for further scrutiny and verification to finalize the lists of our targeted HHs. 3 Gender &amp; Protection Training: The Relief team identified 42 local volunteers (35 in Chengalpettu and 7 in Nellore) and trained them on Gender and protection using the guidelines of NIDM (National Institute of Disaster Management) and capacitated digital data collection using Kobo collect. There are 20 gender and protection training programs conducted in the operational villages covering 1300 men and women (980 in Chengalpettu and 320 in Nellore). a) Volunteers trained on Kobo Entry and Organizing Relief Campsb)The Volunteers adhered the policy on Sexual Harassment &amp; Vulnerable Safeguarding &amp; Protection Policy.c) Staff/ volunteers code of conduct etc. 4.Distribution of Hygiene Kits: 2000 Hygiene kits containing toothpaste, toothbrushes, bathing soap, washing soap, and Sanitary Napkins were distributed to the affected families belonging to SC/ST and vulnerable sections of the community in Nellore and Chengalpettu districts. The relief team also maintained the distribution register apart from the digital entry as part of the evidence of documents. 5.KOBO Collect: As of 21st December, the team has completed the Kobo entry of the entire 2000 House Holds in both relief locations by the active engagement of 42 volunteers under the guidance of five EFICOR staff.6.Adherence to CHS: EFICOR being a CHS-certified organization was careful to always maintain strict adherence to CHS standards and the 9 commitments to ensure that the beneficiaries are treated with dignity and inconvenience is minimal. A complaint handling mechanism was in place and the beneficiaries were well informed about it.7.Challenges: a)Reaching out to the neediest was a challenge as there was political influence and demand from other sectors of the community since everyone was affected by the disasters. b)Continuous rain interrupted the intervention, and it was a great challenge to complete the task within the stipulated time frame, however the teams' tireless effort and dedication made it possible to execute the intervention successfully. c)Falling Sunday &amp; Saturday within the seven days delayed the payment transfer to the vendors of hygiene kits, however, the team won the confidence showing the credibility of the organization and experience, and the supplier could deliver the materials without crediting the money into his account. d) Few ST families do not have a Bank account which may have to go for a hard cash provision by collecting evidence of documents and witness certification etc. e)Due to external influence and misleading of non-beneficiaries the ST community fears sharing the account details in fear of misuse of data, however, the staff still trying to convince that the data will be protected with utmost care and held responsible for the entire process.  “Thank you for your donation. Your generosity will make a real difference in the lives of others.”

Losing a loved one is a difficult situation for anyone. However, the impact is worse for mothers who lose their husbands to HIV-related diseases. Often they themselves are also infected, and the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease often force them to flee their homes and restart their lives elsewhere. Under these circumstances, these women lose the sole breadwinners of their families, have no social support system, and have no source of income to sustain themselves and their children. In many cases, out of desperation, many women resort to commercial sex work in order to meet their needs. Since the 90s, the impact of HIV and AIDS has been devastating. In that difficult time, many organisations and agencies chose to address the needs of people living with HIV and AIDS. However, in recent years with competing challenges, the issue of HIV and AIDS and the people infected and affected by it has been greatly sidelined, as HIV and AIDS issue is no longer the issue that people would want to address or support. However, the need is still huge - there is a great need to enable those infected and affected with HIV and AIDS to secure sustainable livelihood and be accepted in society. 
 We are raising funds to cover the needs of 10 women-headed households who have been infected and affected by HIV.  The key means through which the organisation helps these women to<ul><li>Counsel and give psychosocial support</li><li>Enrol women infected and affected in support groups. In the support groups, the women receive care and support from others in the same situation</li><li>Link with caregivers, home visits etc</li><li>Link with the government for treatment and other welfare provisions</li><li>Link with like-minded organisations working in these areas to meet the needs of these women and their families</li><li>Build skills and receive livelihood support which will enable the women to have a sustainable source of income</li><li>Receive nutrition and educational assistance for their children</li></ul> 
 As the programme focus on engaging community members in viable livelihoods by enabling them to access proper, timely and needed resources, capital and market so that they can use the income/profit to further build up their livelihoods and support their families and community. All these will be done in consultation with the members through a proper feasibility study. The study will clearly state and enable the members and the team to understand and plan for proper sustainable livelihoods by ensuring an effective engagement of members.Community members will be provided with knowledge and equipped with skills to access government livelihood provisions and other welfare schemes. They would continue to access welfare schemes such as ration cards, widow pension, children's education for orphans and semi-orphans, and job facility under some of the government projects etc.Most members in the support Groups are women. Therefore, all the capacity building initiatives such as leadership, group management, bookkeeping, accounting, local resource mobilisation etc. will benefit them. This will boost their confidence in decision making within their family and in the group or community. This will enable them to approach and talk about their issues with stakeholders such as government officials, and various like-minded organisations. Their participation can influence people and policies and raise support for their needs and the needs of others. Nutrition and educational support to children will ensure that they enjoy good health and continue their studies without any difficulty and this ultimately takes the burden away from the mother.
