Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. This includes constant care and round-the-clock medical attention, nutritious food and maintaining a hygienic environment to keep the seniors in comfort and good health. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. The goal of 100 Lives is enabling independent life of dignity after a Spinal Cord Injury that imposes multiple, lifelong disabilities, and for which there is no cure. Even today less than 10% get access to Quality Rehabilitation, the only way forward. About 80%-plus of persons with spinal cord injury are poor. On a conservative basis, about 15,000 persons sustain spinal cord injury in India every year. A vast proportion of them do not even know how to deal with it. 100 Lives will enable rehabilitation and facilitate independent living for 100 persons with Spinal Cord Injury in 2018. 
 100 Lives will enable rehabilitation and independent living to 100 persons with Spinal Cord Injury in 2018.This will give them a second chance in life after a devastating injury.100 Lives is an initiative of The Ganga Foundation, an organisation focused on enabling inclusion of persons with spinal cord injury.The Ganga Foundation has extended 28,000-plus (and counting) acts of financial and non-financial support in its work since early 2010.The Ganga Foundation will partner with high quality rehabilitation centres to facilitate rehabilitation. Quality Peer Guidance will also be enabled to motivate, train and enhance quality of life. 
 As there is no treatment for Spinal Cord Injury anywhere in the world, rehabilitation is the only way to restore lives of persons with Spinal Cord Injury. The goal of rehabilitation is resumption of a functionally active life with as much independence as possible. This project will restore lives, create role models and stress importance of Quality Rehabilitation. It will enable persons with spinal cord injury be independent, become active in the community and get back to education / livelihood. It will reduce stress on the person injured and the family by making enabling the person lead a meaningful and dignified life.

More than 90 percent of the wheelchair users in India, estimated at 1.3 million, use ill-fitting wheelchairs that severely compromise quality of life and damage health. Every wheelchair user deserves a customized wheelchair in the same way we buy and use shirts, trousers and shoes that fit us well. 
 Kotak Wheelchair Marathon 2018 aspires to create awareness about the benefits of using quality wheelchairs, by raising resources to execute pilot projects for distributing quality wheelchairs in five places in India.The first two editions of this event, which is India’s only marathon organized by persons with disability for all runners, will empower 80 lives across India via good wheelchairs and rehabilitation support for persons paralyzed neck down.You can sponsor one or more runners to to make quality wheelchairs possible..If you wish to sponsor a quality wheelchair for one person with spinal cord injury, you can sponsor 30 runners (Rs 22,500). Since 2009, our work has touched 3500-plus lives in this space with an emphasis on rehabilitation support and livelihood. The Spinal Foundation, Chandigarh Spinal Rehab, Experience Sharing Program, Kotak Wheelchair Marathon and Peer Trainers are a few of our key initiatives.

A wheelchair should improve lifestyle and health. Yet about 95% wheelchair users in India use wheelchairs that affect lifestyle, damage health and cause more harm than good.Lack of awareness of what is a good wheelchair and why it is important, and lack of availability of good wheelchairs are the reasons for this problem in the disability space. Lack of awareness is deeper among medical, para-medical professionals and donors.Wheelchairs that dominate the landscape in India went out of use in the developed world about 50 years ago.India deserves better. Wheelchair users in India deserve maximum lifestyle and health. 
 The Right Wheelchair aspires to alter the distressing landscape of bad wheelchairs dominating the market in India. The Right Wheelchair will enhance lifestyle and health of persons with spinal cord injury by:<ol><li>Providing 200 world-class wheelchairs designed at IIT Madras and made by a start-up incubated at IIT Madras; a wheelchair with comparable features from abroad will cost at least five times the price. Each will cost about Rs 30,000.</li><li>Providing 300 wheelchairs of Motivation, a U.K based social organization founded 30 years ago by a person with spinal cord injury. Each will cost about Rs 12,000.</li></ol> 
 The Right Wheelchair will directly touch the lives of 500 persons with spinal cord injury and influence many more by showcasing how lifestyle changes.The Right Wheelchair is an initiative to empower persons with spinal cord injury with good wheelchairs that are customized for each person.The Right Wheelchair also aims to create awareness on why every wheelchair user must sit on a wheelchair that is customized for him / her.The Right Wheelchair initiative will present a replicable model that could lead to use of good wheelchairs and eradication of the bad wheelchairs.

The Right Wheelchair

Bedsores are enemy # 1 for persons with spinal cord injury worldwide, and one of the two major causes of their death.If a person with spinal cord injury sleeps on the floor, a thin mattress or a bad quality mattress, bedsore is the only certainty within a matter of days; this is the reality for several thousand across India, as poverty makes the bed a low-priority even when it becomes a necessity.Lack of complete or partial sensation below the level of a spinal cord injury creates the biggest risk for persons living with this devastating disability. A good bed, a good wheelchair cushion and must-do skin practices are the three pillars to live without bedsore. Even if one of the three is absent, the only certainty is bedsore sooner than later. Must-do skin practices and a wheelchair cushion are usually ensured for those lucky to get timely, quality rehabilitation; yet, this group, is just 10% of those who sustain a spinal cord injury. The bed becomes the missing piece.As a person with spinal cord injury may spend a longer time on bed, especially in the initial months, the lack of one quickly adds to life-threatening complications. 
 The Ganga Foundation is launching One Bed, Two Lives as a project to provide a good bed to 500 persons with spinal cord injury every year. A good bed, by helping minimise the incidence of bedsore and fostering independent living, will also enable a family member to lead a productive, meaningful life. This is why each bed touches at least two lives.The focus of One Bed, Two Lives is to showcase the essential need for a good bed for persons with spinal cord injury, and how a failure to invest in a good bed leads to bedsores that threaten lifestyle and life, and also cost many times more to heal than the cost of a bed.One Bed, Two Lives hopes to create a replicable, affordable model that can be adopted by other organisations, especially the government, across India.One Bed, Two Lives will also be accompanied by an aggressive education program on skin care, prevention and healing of bedsores and The Right Wheelchair.The education and awareness campaigns will not be just for persons with spinal cord injury and their families, but also for doctors, therapists, nurses, paramedics and community workers so as to develop the eco-system. 
 500 persons with spinal cord injury from economically challenged background across India will get a good bed and a cot. They need not lie down on a hard surface or makeshift beds.Each will be able to lie down with good posture and sleep peacefully without having to worry about the risk of damage to their skin in parts of the body where they have no sensation.By ensuring a bed, One Bed, Two Lives will help reduce the incidence of bedsores among the target audience of 500 persons.The cot will be an incentive to invest in the next bed, as the benefits would be clear within a year. If persons with spinal cord injury with a bed and a cot are able to live without bedsores, they will be more productive, lead active lives and be a valuable member of the community; bedsore means confinement to the home.Even if 50% of the target audience lives without major bedsore, it will mean a saving of at least Rs 3 crore in hospitalisation cost plus no loss in incomes for the individual and the family, apart from qualitative benefits of avoiding the constraints, including death, imposed by bedsores.
