“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. HEAL was launched by The Foundation in 2008 in order to combat the social and self-discrimination that survivors of child sexual abuse face. Since 2017, HEAL has operated as an independent NGO, with a mission to build the capacity of adults to identify, prevent and respond to child sexual abuse, as well as extend accessible, trauma-informed psychotherapeutic services to survivors of child sexual abuse. While the restrictions imposed during the lockdown were preventive in safeguarding the masses from the spread of novel coronavirus, it confined many of our country’s children, making them more vulnerable to abuse behind closed doors. Your contribution to the Heal Foundation will enable us to reach communities across India through workshops (both physical and virtual) that, crucially, educate children on personal protection and spread awareness among parents and adults to ensure no child has to ever suffer the agony of sexual abuse.Children of all ages, gender and socio-economic class are vulnerable to sexual abuse. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, study on child sexual abuse (2007):<ul><li>53.22% i.e. over 1 in 2 children in India experience one or more forms of sexual abuse before they turn 18.</li><li>60% of sexual offenders were known to the victim and were family members, neighbours, friends or classmates.</li><li>Only 3.4% of the children reported any CSA incident to the police.18.5% shared it with siblings or parents. 72.1% kept quiet. </li><li>The reported cases make for less than 25%. The actual number could be 5 times the reported one. </li></ul> 
 We conduct awareness workshops that are designed for children and adults. The workshops for children are tailored grade-wise to make the curriculum age-appropriate. The workshops for adults target all important stakeholders such as teachers, non-teaching staff and parents.Awareness Workshops - Adults: The workshops for adults are designed with the main goal of making adults aware of CSA and educating them to provide safety to children around them. The particulars include:<ul><li>Generating awareness about CSA and how it affects children, its alarming presence, how it tends to occur, etc.</li><li>Educating the adults about what they can do to protect children.</li><li>Equipping the adults with appropriate responses in case of a disclosure.</li><li>Training adults on how they can provide emotional support to CSA survivors</li></ul>Personal Safety Workshops - Children: The workshops for children are designed with the aim of providing education to children around their body safety. Its particulars include,<ul><li>Educating children on what safe and unsafe situations and behaviour are as concepts</li><li>How to ensure their body safety</li><li>Developing a sense of personal autonomy in children</li><li>Responding to situations that make them feel unsafe</li><li>Generating a ‘Trusted Adults Sheet’ for the children, by the children</li></ul> 
 HEAL has reached one lakh children, parents, school administrators and staff through over 600 workshops mainly in Mumbai, and Maharashtra. In the next five years our work will extend across the whole of India. With every workshop :<ul><li>Children are fully armed with the knowledge of potential abuse (physical, emotional and online) and possible abusers.</li><li>Parents are fully armed to look out for signs of predatory behaviour in adults around their children. </li><li>Teachers are equipped to spot children showing signs of possible sexual abuse by - irritability, sleeplessness, hostility etc.</li><li>Both parents and teachers know exactly what to do and who to reach out to, should they have a disclosure made to them.</li><li>School administrators and staff are also now fully educated and apprised of how to protect a child in their school’s ecosystem.</li></ul>
