For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. Mental health is an issue that in one way or another affects us all. Mental illnesses are a diverse range of conditions affecting people across the life course, from autism and intellectual disability in childhood, to depression, substance abuse and psychoses in adulthood to dementia in old age. Given this diversity it is not surprising, then, that it is estimated that at least 1 in 10 persons worldwide is directly affected by a mental illness. Apart from the astonishing numbers mental illnesses are also associated with reduced life expectancy, both due to direct causes such as suicide, as well as the poorer physical health and poorer quality medical care often associated with persons with mental illness. The combined contribution to reduced life expectancy and poorer quality of life leads them to contribute to about 15% of the overall global burden of disease. The major issue, from a global perspective, is not only the enormous burden and overwhelming numbers of people affected by these problems, but that the vast majority of these persons do not receive the care we know can greatly improve their lives. Currently, India has the highest rate of youth suicide in the world, standing at 35.5 persons for every 100,000. Globally, there is 1 suicide occurring every 40 seconds. 
 The MINDS Foundation India is committed to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness through education and providing access to cost-effective, high-quality care. Founded in March 2012, MINDS India develops evidence-based educational programming for rural communities, teachers, physicians, and schoolchildren. In order to sustain long-term change, MINDS has also developed a training module for empowering health workers in the community to take on the role of CMHW (Community Mental Health Worker). CMHW works alongside our clinical partners in order to provide access to medical care for those identified as being in need within the communities. Additionally, the CMHW takes on the role of sustaining our efforts by continuing mental health education in their communities, organizing peer-support groups, collecting data, and assisting those receiving treatment with their prognosis and treatment plans. Our vision is to create an environment in which anyone can seek the mental health care they need without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. 
 To date, MINDS has been able to educate over 250,000 individuals in 150 communities. MINDS has been able to provide mental health education to 260 schools consisting of 50,000 schoolchildren and 7500 teachers. Since it’s inception, one of the driving forces of MINDS has been it’s research and development. To date, MINDS has published 18 studies in internationally-recognized medical journals and has had 135 international and domestic volunteers take part with grassroots research on-the-ground.

India is witnessing an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases. The second wave of the pandemic has devastated the country's healthcare infrastructure and life as we know it. The toll this pandemic has had on the mental health of Covid patients and their families, while beyond measure, is a serious concern for the country. There are sweeping anxieties and fears of contracting the infection. And, more importantly, that's twined with the comfort we have in people we trust collapsing around us. As a whole population, Indians are feelings of isolation, anxiety, stress, depression, guilt, and loneliness. Those who have survived COVID have dealt with intensive medical interventions and will deal with long-haul symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks, brain fog, survivor guilt, and PTSD. Children have had their lives disrupted. When it comes to children's mental health, we often seem to be in a blind spot. One reason could be: we don't want to acknowledge it and it's very hard for us as a society to accept it.  <ol><li>MINDS Counseling Centre: Due to the acute need for increased psychotherapy services, MINDS will gear funding and resources towards upscaling our services, delivered virtually to a PAN-India population. These sessions will be lead by trained clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. We aim to bring on 4 dedicated professional to provide a minimum of 200 hours of psychotherapy a week.</li><li>MINDS Distress Helpline: We have been operating a Mental Health Distress Line for a number of years. Typically, we receive calls from all over India and assist in crisis management and connecting folks with local care. Due to limitations of staffing and financial resources, we have had to limit hours of operation. During the COVID pandemic in 2020, we saw an increase of 260% of calls/messages to our MINDS Distress Line from all over India. We propose here to upscale our services to provide 24/7 services with the line staffed by trained mental health social workers and clinical psychologists.</li><li>Content &amp; Resource Development: MINDS is one of the only organizations focused on servicing the rural population with mental health services. Due to lockdowns we are limited in in-person interactions with them, but we will be developing increased multimedia content to be shared and spread across digital platforms such as a micro-website and WhatsApp. Additionally, we will be increasing mental health literacy via guides, toolkits, and coping strategies during this critical time--all of which will be shared across social media platforms, corporate and media partners, and network of institutions.</li></ol> 
 We aim to make our Counseling Centre services and MINDS Distress Helpline available to anyone in India regardless of where they are or who they are. We will ensure to hire staff to cover a number of languages as well. Our content &amp; resources will be available for a larger global audience.Our hotline will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our counseling centre aims to provide by starting 200 hours of psychotherapy weekly.
