Livelihood

We, at ‘The New LEED’ develop, train, help empower isolated, sick and widowed, deserted, single mothers to learn skills by educating and employing and while in Thalir-LEED, we promote these blossoming self help group single mothers, and widows by rebuilding, creating, making confident and independent by employing and marketing their creative products ultimately giving a life of dignity.Our highly concerned marshlands of Kallukottai, Perungudi slum community, one of the largest slums in Chennai spread over 370 acres, slum broken into ‘Nagar’ on either side of the Perungudi elevated train station and housing about 20,000 families. More than 80% of the residents are manual labourers who are located in unhealthy and environmentally unsafe areas.The major factors contributing the development of slums is the lack of employment, daily struggling with lack of street lights, no water supply system which makes sanitation and health questionable, high flood risk chances, 204 unpaved streets not only make it difficult for them to commute out of the slum but susceptible to many diseases, health hazards, a few of households don't have access to any toilets and defecate in open. It has no drainage system, rain or sun, water stagnates always which leads to clogging, high issues of ‘feminism’, ‘equality’ which is a distant and fancy concept to those residents. The abundance of litter and garbage in the area inevitably leads to unhygienic conditions of living which make them go through with everyday struggle of living, even higher education mostly pursued by boys, surprisingly, majority of girls are married at the age of 16. The majority of women living here are mostly unemployed, have numerous social taboos and totally depend on their fathers or husbands for their living. Hence, these women and children are often left in a disadvantaged position by the men who are addicted to alcohol or by men who are less committed to contributing to the family. They often are left to face situations of poverty and lack any form of empowerment that may lead them to live a self sustainable life.  
 The New LEED Trust as worked towards empowering women by providing them with a skill development training program which involves basket making and tailoring. These two projects were dedicated to make the lives of these women and their families better, by offering them a hands-on skill through which they may earn an extra income. Similarly, the children of the community are also looked after. Apart from helping them with school subjects, the organisation is keen on helping them develop holistically, through an activity based supplementary education program. This involves providing the children with spoken English classes, library facilities and classes for extracurricular activities 
 These projects have touched the lives of many women and children. Around 80 women are enrolled in the skill development training program and as many as 100 children are a part of the activity based supplementary education program and are regular recipients of scholarships.The initiatives taken by the organisation have enabled many women and children to better their lives even amidst the difficult circumstances. These projects have brought smiles to many faces and have empowered the women and children of the Perungudi slum.

The Perungudi slum community is one of the largest slum communities in Chennai. It lodges about 20,000 families.The women living here are mostly unemployed and depend on their husbands for their living. The New Liberation Education Economic Development trust is a non-profit organisation which was started in the year 1991 that works for the upliftment of the less-privileged living in the Perungudi slum. The organisation focuses on providing education and economic development to the masses. The organisation also provides facilities that promote people's overall wellbeing. The organisation has set up a medicare centre, an activity based supplementary education program for children, skill development training programs like tailoring, basket making for women, library services and computer training program to educate women and youth to be self-sustainable and economically independent. The organisation focuses on aiding the community on its path to progress, by offering its many services.

Burning Problems of the Project: Domestic violence, Unemployment, Poverty, Lack of fundamental facilities Goal of the project:‘To enhance the employability of disadvantaged and poor women, adolescent girls who have successfully completed The New LEED’s Tailoring Training Program.&nbsp; Objectives of the Project:1. To identify marketing areas and employability of disadvantaged and poor women, adolescent girls who have successfully completed LEED’s certified (6 months/12 months) Tailoring Training Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;2. To identify potential retailers/ exporters.3. To enhance self-employment and self-reliance amongst the desolate women.4. Help the students to purchase a tailoring machine.5.
