“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Barua who is lovingly called ‘Sir’ and ‘Deuta’ (father in Assamese) by the residents of Seneh. With your help, 80-year-old Group Captain Barua can fulfill his mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless women from dying on the streets, alone. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. "My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. India will continue to add 1 million to its workforce every month for the next 15 years, most of whom come from impoverished backgrounds. Our growing economy with a massive skill-deficit provides real opportunity for them to escape the cycle of poverty, through gainful employment but imparting livelihood training is proving to be insufficient. 
 The/Nudge Foundation focuses on sustainable poverty alleviation by building a strong 360-degree life, learning and economic foundation for poor in residential “Gurukuls”, along with lifelong support system. Our goal is to pull 1 million people sustainably out of poverty by 2020 
 Ayisha is the sole breadwinner for a family of 10, she worked at a garment factory for over 7 years earning hardly anything to support her family. She joined Gurukul in hopes of a steady career path and a better job. Now she earns twice the amount of her previous salary working at a bank and can now take care of her sisters' education. Ayisha is one of the 500 other students we've graduated since we began our journey one year back. This year, our goal is to impact 5X students by graduating 2500.

The problem of youth employability has significant implications for underserved youth, their families and communities. India has a high rate of unemployment and endemic underemployment. The unemployment rate among youth aged 15-29 years in India is 20.2% in urban and 16.0% in rural areas, significantly higher than the overall unemployment rate among working-age adults, which is 8.0% in urban and 5.4% in rural areas (source PLFS 2018-19). The unemployment rate among the 15-24 year age group is even higher at 23% (source: ILO 2020 estimate). In addition, 180m young people are expected to join the labour force in the next 15 years. As a more significant section of the population moves away from agriculture (India expects to lose about 13.5m jobs in agriculture between 2017-2022), there is a lack of sustainable non-agricultural livelihood options in rural areas. As youth seek livelihood opportunities in urban areas, they encounter a significant mismatch between their capabilities and the skill sets employers are seeking. Even youth who have completed high school or college-level education often lack the language skills and personality to get a job, retain employment and build a better future for themselves and their families.  The service sector is one of eight industries expected to create over 100 million jobs by 2025 (Economic Times, 2019). Service sector jobs are also highly aspirational for India’s youth. Given these reasons, the service sector presents an opportunity for youth to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty. Employers in the service sector, one of India's fastest-growing sectors, have highlighted the need for youth to enter the job market with skills like communication, problem-solving, interpersonal skills and career management. 
 India is the 5th largest economy in the world and has pulled over 270m people out of poverty between 2006-2017. However, 369m people still live below the poverty line, of which 50m live in extreme poverty. India’s HDI rank at 131 is far below the world average.The/Nudge’s purpose is to alleviate poverty sustainably and at scale. One of the critical levers for poverty reduction is the provision of livelihood opportunities and income in the hands of the poor, which in turn creates agency for individuals to address their problems and improve their quality of life. Livelihood creation requires a range of interventions that generate opportunities for employment, enable individuals to learn the skills necessary, and facilitate the employment of skilled individuals.Future Perfect is conceptualised out of months of intensive on-ground research with top employers in the service sector and unemployed youth. The study indicated that English proficiency and 21st-century skills remain the top two skills required by employers and the youth for employment.Post the research; the program went through multiple iterations and pilots to design the most congruous program for the employers and the youth. Future Perfect Program is now a 2-month model which focuses on building 21st-century skills and English proficiency through behavioural nudges and experiential learning, thus enabling employability amongst the youth.   Future Perfect is a service-sector employability program which works with unemployed and underemployed youth from underprivileged communities who typically migrate to urban areas for jobs that meet their needs and aspirations. It is a holistic, trainer-supported employability program that delivers languages and foundational life skills (workplace communication, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, interview and career management). Future Perfect is delivered virtually, hence circumventing mobility issues and enhancing access. The program leverages technology to keep complexity low and accessibility and reach high. The curriculum and content are aligned with industry expectations and geared towards language skills, personality development and behavioural change. Through this holistic learning approach, the program aims at achieving the following:<ol><li>Mobilise youth from low-income and marginalised communities for the program.</li><li>an average 1 level jump on the CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Languages) which builds the trained youth to be proficient in workplace English</li><li>Making significant gains in their problem-solving abilities in a professional setting</li><li>Improve their interpersonal skills, support participants to ace interviews, and prepare them for the workplace. </li><li>60%+ graduates would be in employment or education at the end of the course (&lt;40% of students in the NEET category - Not in Employment, Education, or Training.</li><li>Start in a workplace with plans for career growth through interactions with corporate partners and mentorships during the course.</li></ol> 
 With your support, we will mobilize youth to enable online learning for 4,800+ youth in one year, putting them on the path to meaningful employment by improving their English and life skills, guided by trainers.In addition, your financial support would help us invest in the technology, monitoring and evaluation resources and the program teams to deliver on the Future Perfect program priorities. We will use tools and technologies to engage students with learning content, train the trainers of the program, conduct assessments at the program's beginning and completion and manage the program's day-to-day operations such as tracking mobilization, daily attendance, student performance, and managing engagements with colleges and with employer-partners.

Future Perfect - Enabling upward socio-economic mobility for youth  from low income families

According to the 2011 SECC data, 23 million households in India meet at least 3 deprivation criteria the Ministry of Rural Development laid out. They are usually referred to as ‘extremely poor’, ‘poorest of the poor’ or ‘ultra-poor’. The ultra-poor households are characterized by 1) food insecurity, 2) ownership of few or no assets of even a non-durable nature, 3) limited livelihood prospects and 4) social and economic exclusion. 
 The/Nudge started the implementation of the graduation approach* in Jharkhand with Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups and Scheduled Tribes in 2019 with 1170 households, and our endline data (internal program monitoring) has shown promising results:● 90% reduction in distress migration● income increase of Rs. 15,000 among 91% of households,● 66% increase in assets among 82% households● 91% households accessing credit from community institutions● 98% of the households are engaged in two diversified livelihoods (vegetable cultivation andlivestock rearing).These results, despite the impact of Covid-19, have given us the confidence to scale the graduation approach. With India having articulated a vision of “No One Left Behind”, we believe we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to truly make a significant dent in ending ultra-poverty, within our lifetime.*The Graduation Approach is an evidence-rich, carefully sequenced program targeting women and working with them to build agency and resilience in a time-bound manner. It targets the improvement of the woman’s agency, food security, income &amp; savings, productive assets and access to social protection and credit. 
 Our 10-year goal is to pull 5 million unique households in India out of ultra-poverty through the contextualized implementation of the graduation approach. The target below will help with 100 households over a period of 4 years.
