And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. The marginalisation of children is made acute when they belong to at-risk families, are children with disabilities or abandoned, destitute, and in conflict with the law. While the Constitution ensures children of their right to education and health, another basic right — Right to Play — remains unrecognised, undervalued and unadopted.  With our ethos, “It’s easier to build strong children than repair broken adults”, we aim to ensure every child’s Right to Play by mainstreaming play in every life and at the policy level. We do this with three programmes:  Our Play2Learn programme ensures children have uninterrupted access to play opportunities and materials in their schools or communities.  Our Conscious Play™ programme helps build critical thinking, communication and socio-emotional skills through carefully curated play sessions.  Our Play Practitioner Programme aims at equipping teachers with knowledge, mindsets and actions which helps them bring the power of play to classrooms. In 2022-2023, we reached 75,000 children and trained 5,000+ teachers through our play programmes. We also set up 528 Play2Learn centres across seven districts in Maharashtra. Rachna, a student from one of our play sessions, exclaims, "I had fun playing games such as Discover India and solving the puzzle of the Indian map. It helped me learn about the states I was unfamiliar with, and also helped me learn about the country." Play isn't just about fun; it's about building curiosity and a love for learning. Our carefully curated play materials and play sessions create a safe and joyful space for children to thrive.
