“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. “I saw a girl, barely 7 or 8, being pushed into flesh trade. Her cries for help still echo in my ears. There were men as old as 60 r*ping the innocent child. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. The Society is registered under the TN Societies Registration Act and has valid Sec 12A, 80G and FCRA approvals.The Society called SODEWS in short is engaged in Rural Education &amp; Health as major activities for the past 20 years serving mainly in the Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu. Society's objective is economic upliftment of the rural populace with particular emphasis on Education and Health. It is our conviction that better health and education are the main catalysts for the emancipation of rural poverty.In education, the flag-ship programme is running of a hostel with a capacity of 150 (90 boys and 60 girls) for poor tribals and others. The hostel admits children from poor families studying from 1st to 12th standards and gives them all basic facilities like food, hygiene, entertainment including sports. The children are admitted to nearby government schools for education. In addition, extra coaching is given to the children in higher classes.In addition, the society provides teaching support to government schools where there is a shortage of teaching staff. Also, we send our trained staff to government primary schools and anganwadis to supplement the teaching provided by the staff there, as it is our conviction that a strong foundation is imperative as they go higher.In health, we have a team of dedicated staff who go to a few government Primary Health Centres to support the staff. In particular, PHCs find it difficult to cater to a large number of expecting mothers who visit on specific days of the week. Here our staff help the PHC staff in taking care of them and also counsel them on how to take care of themselves and the child. They also are actively engaged in talking to adolescent girls in various schools and counselling them on health and hygiene particular about menstruation and myths surrounding the same.In addition, the society provides medical equipment for government hospitals / PHCs and also in improving the physical infrastructure.The society also takes steps to improve the computer literacy of the children and provides computers/laptops to government schools to further the use of computers.
