“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Umoya Sports, an initiative under a Delhi-based non-profit,' The Umoya Foundation' works towards empowering children and individuals with and without Disabilities enabling them to lead an enriched life by equipping them with life skills such as teamwork, confidence, and critical thinking; providing physical and mental well-being; and building an ‘Inclusive Culture’ through Sports and play-based education programs in schools and low-income communitiesWe curate and implement sports and play education programs, which are progressive year-long, in-school programs specially curated considering the needs of students with Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Disorders, and locomotor disabilities. Our unique pedagogy is integrated with academic outcomes, and life skills while developing sports skills. The program is implemented by our specially trained mentors as part of the school curriculum. We also host inclusive sports festivals to change the social narrative about disabilities by bringing children, youth and young adults with and without disabilities to play together and breaking the social stigma.

Play is the first form of learning for any child, but it is also the first form of exclusion for a child with a disabilityAccording to UNESCO N for Nose 2019 report, an estimated ~8 million children aged &lt;19 years live with disabilities in India with limited or close to no opportunities for their participation in fitness, sports, and games, whether for leisure, recreation or competition.This challenge for children with disabilities (CwD) extends to other aspects of overall development impacting them in the long run in their adulthood, affecting their livelihood and their physical and mental well-being also.Currently out of 40 - 80 million People with Disabilities in India, 46% are uneducated, 39% drop out of school and a huge 63% of them are unemployed.This lack of accessibility and social barriers for CwD also results in 57% of CwD being more likely to be obese and 32% more likely to experience high psychological distress and mental health challenges as adults.We at Umoya Sports have identified 3 specific challenges faced by Children with Disabilities (CwD) leading to this crisis, which we refer to as the ‘Disability crisis’–1. Lack of quality programs providing holistic development to students with disabilities in schools.2. Lack of social skills development because of social stigma and misconceptions about disabilities, making it difficult for CwD to integrate into society. Lack of awareness about disabilities in society along with empathy creates barriers for CwD.3. Lack of physical education and physical activity leads to various subsequent physical and mental health issues. Unfortunately, CwD is frequently left out, be it in school or communities, and most often do not participate in sports/ physical education either due to lack of accessibility, neglect or deny participation. Many schools are not equipped with a playground or have an inclusive physical education program in their school. 
 Umoya Sports is on the mission of empowering children and individuals with and without Disabilities enabling them to lead an enriched life by equipping them with life skills such as teamwork, confidence, and critical thinking; providing physical and mental well-being, and building an ‘Inclusive Culture’ in schools and low-income communities.Umoya curates and implements sports and play-based education programs for children with Intellectual disabilities, Developmental Disorders and Locomotor Disabilities with a focus to provide high-quality learning through Purposeful Play integrated with 21st-century skills and socio-emotional skills.Our theory of change involves partnering with (special and inclusive) schools, NGOs and other stakeholders that impact the learning and life of a child with a disability. We implemented our year-long programs integrated with life skills and Early Childhood education through our 2 spoke operational model-•	Direct Implementation: Our trained adapted sports mentors implement our programs in schools on a weekly basis as part of the school curriculum•	Teacher Training: Build mindset and knowledge in teachers, physical educators, and parents to make learning fun and build inclusion in classrooms through purposeful play and sports for children with disabilitiesUmoya through our direct school-level work will work with 8 schools to demonstrate them as our Inclusive Play Labs, providing quality adapted physical education to 750 children. With the aim of making sports and play accessible to every child with a disability, we have partnered with Pratham and ELMS to train and build a capacity of close to 100 educators delivering quality learning to more than 10000 children.
