I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Our ‘Threads of Humanity’ program focuses specifically on young people most ostracized by society i.e. ‘Children in Conflict with Law’ (CCL) and ‘Youth at Risk’. Many of the young CCLs we work with feel alienated, lost and helpless, while others are completely dismissive of the system that keeps them incarcerated. Along with anger and resentment is a deep-seated sense of isolation, of not being given a fair chance by society. The public outrage after the Nirbhaya case completely altered the lens through which we view ‘Children in Conflict with Law’. It not only altered legal modalities but also created a ‘collective conscience’ that appeals for stringent punishment for young offenders. The Juvenile Justice Act lays emphasis on the social reintegration of the child. The problem however lies in the implementation of the Act. A lot of the requirements like mental health and educational services are not being met by the current system of incarceration. Our conversations with Magistrates and Superintendents, and our own experiences of working in this sector have shown that the emphasis laid on reformation is not being fully executed. In the absence of necessary action, we are sending the child back to the same environment thatfirst pushed him into the cycle of crime and destitution. 
 ‘Threads of Humanity’ - a flagship program of The Yuva Ekta Foundation, focuses on the empowerment of At-Risk Youth and Children in Conflict with Law (CCL).Using the arts we create safe spaces, encouraging participants to undertake a journey of self-awareness and take ownership of their choices. This has been one of our longest and most successful running programs through which our team has engaged with over 6000 young offenders and marginalized youth in the last 12 years. Any program therefore that works with young offenders, needs to focus on building a sense of ‘Self’ and the competencies of Emotional Intelligence for them to accept any avenues of change in the future. Our primary project objective is to use Expressive Arts and Psychodrama therapy towards creating a mentally and emotionally healthy child, who is equipped to break the cycle of crime and reclaim his place in mainstream society.  By more interactive opportunities and building safe spaces for young CCLs, we can help inculcate values like Empathy and Respect for those ‘outside’; alongside providing effective role models for those living within these Observation facilities. 
 Working at the forefront of Social Justice and rehabilitation efforts for at-risk young offenders, The Yuva Ekta Foundation is seeking funds for the continuation and advancement of the project ‘Comprehensive program for rehabilitation and Reintegration of Children in Conflict with Law’.This program targets young offenders aged 16 – 21 years of age, living in observation homes under the protective custody of the Judiciary. Through our Expressive Arts Workshops, we delve into issues of Self-Esteem, Self-Worth and other indicators of Emotional Intelligence that are not being addressed by the current systems of rehabilitation.PROGRAM OUTCOMES<ul><li>Increase in Emotional Stability and Autonomy, decrease in Aggression, and an improvement in the overall Adjustment of the beneficiaries.</li><li>Greater awareness of their own emotions and that of the other, the ability to express their feelings and negotiate through challenging situations with maturity and sustained participation.</li><li>A more harmonious atmosphere within the home where the CCLs co-exist peacefully and co-operate with the jail authorities.</li><li>A CCL becoming more aspirational, open to fresh opportunities and constructive choices at the time of release.</li><li>A CCL who has the necessary tools to negotiate with challenging realities and has more control over his actions and emotions.</li><li>A mentally and emotionally healthy beneficiary who has recovered from past trauma and is ready to make a fresh start.</li><li>A Report that documents the process in detail and assesses the efficacy of interventions.</li></ul>
