For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. By then, Preeti had spent years of hardship as a homeless person. When Ashadeep found Preeti, she was malnourished and was diagnosed with severe mental illness. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. But the rise in costs of medical care and other essentials have begun to pose a huge challenge for the couple.Dr Anjana is struggling to keep the doors of Ashadeep open for more people. The fate of women is even worse. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. They have been rescuing the homeless from the streets and giving them a safe home for decades now.A beacon of hope for mentally ill homeless"Our main objective is to provide the best treatment and psychiatric care to those we rescue so they can live active lives. We enable our residents to live a life of dignity through medication and different therapies. We also try to find the families of those patients who have lost their way home and reunite them with their loved ones. To date, we have been able to reintegrate over 1000 people with their families after completion of treatment,” the NGO founder says.The nonprofit not only provides treatment to the people they rescue but also gives them skills training and a wide array of employment opportunities so they can live with their heads held high.But after four decades of selfless service, Dr Anjana today faces a challenge like never before. Undeniably, a rampaging Covid-19 (CORONA) second wave has hit the world so hard. We are currently living in a strange, confounding period, full of uncertainty and bizarre events. People with financial security and ability are able to combat the virus with necessary measures but few others like tribal communities that are stranded, daily wagers in solitary and differently abled people stuck at home are facing massive difficulties. Many hospitals are in lack of beds and equipments due to flooded patients and also a vast majority of patients and families are in dire need of mental health support. Owing to this, Thuvakkam has developed this Covid-19 Response fund. 
 Thuvakkam has formed an Emergency Response Team (ERT) for combating the impact of this second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India. We are working towards gratifying the mental health needs of covid-19 patients and families, creating stability and security for lower-income and underprivileged families and satisfying the needs of hospitals Already the process has been started by finding, listing and prioritizing the beneficiaries for the usage of the fund. The funds raised for COVID-19 Response will be disbursed for the following relief activities by Thuvakkam NGO;<ul><li>Mental Wellness - Under the concept of 'friend in need', mental health support for Covid-19 affected patients and their families will be given. Talk sessions will be conducted and a helpline number/ chat system will be set up for catering the needs of them.</li><li>Hospital aid - Various equipment that are in demand currently will be provided to various Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs), clinics and other hospitals. Blood donation and Plasma donation campaigns are also aimed to be conducted.</li><li>Supporting the lower-income and underprivileged families for Daily sustainability, Providing Ration (groceries) and essential kits for Tribal Community, Daily wagers, Differently abled people and Roadside shopkeepers.</li><li>Gift of giving - Orphanages and Old age homes will be given indoor activity items (board games, books, kits like knitting). Under the concept of 'giving wall', a box at different locations will be kept where people can drop in essentials/food packets that can be taken &amp; used by the roadside people; food packets/blankets/sanitization items distribution to roadside people</li></ul>Transparency: The money raised is accounted for and receipted for each penny. The Donation made also has a 50% tax exemption for Indians alone. The records of donation and recipients would be maintained both in terms of funders and beneficiaries. This would be published on our website and social media. (Discretion will be maintained for confidential information) 
 UPDATES ON THE PROJECT﻿The following are our achievements from the funds that we received in the past year (2020):<ul><li>Supplied Covid-19 Response kit to over 1900+ families</li><li>Reached out to 7600+ individuals</li><li>Provided dry ration and hygiene kit worth of INR18.5 lakhs to the people in need across 30+ localities</li><li>Created Covid-19 awareness to over 50,000+ people</li></ul>By this project, we intended to create a secure and sustainable life for the lower-income, underprivileged families and indigenous people in the past year. But now we have expanded our horizons to mainly cater the mental health needs of the Covid-19 patients and families, aiding the requirements of hospitals and through gift of giving we also focus on orphanages, old age homes and road side people. The main locality where we are working to implement this current project is in Tier III, Tier II, and Tier I cities at Tamil Nadu, India.  Through this fund, we believe that after taking all the necessary precautions, we will venture and use all of our time and manpower to help those in need. The following are the impact that we aspire to create:<ul><li>Through provision of medical facilities to hospitals, the current scarcity of medical equipments, beds, etc., will be mitigated.</li><li>By supporting the livelihood of the underprivileged, their financial burden will be reduced; thereby reducing their mental worries.</li><li>Through our mental wellness program, the patients and their families will be relieved from their mental stress.</li><li>Through Gift of giving, we aim to quench the needs of homeless, roadside people, orphanages and old age homes.</li></ul>Fundraising Target: INR 20,00,000 (In Indian Rupees Twenty Lakhs Only)

According to India State of Forest Report 2019, there is nearly 25 percent (one fourth) of India’s total land area is now under forest and tree cover. However, there is still a long way to go – as per the government India will take a decade to reaches its target of having 33 percent of its total area under forest and tree cover.Due to the lack of green cover, there are huge climatic changes, environmental issues ranging from carbon dioxide emission, soil erosion, habitat destruction and loss of biological diversity. To tackle this issue, Thuvakkam started a project called "Give a Tree".

Thuvakkam's "Give a Tree" initiative is your way to help contribute to increasing India's greenery.In this initiative, Thuvakkam under your name will plant, nurture your trees and let you know the exact location of where your trees are planted and their picture. Los of bright and smart children and youngsters are not able to continue their education, due to financial distress in some form or the other. Even though these kids have big dreams and want to go into big jobs in the future, they are in lack of support to help them achieve it. These people struggle to survive in the society for their basic needs. Therefore, their dream for education becomes a question and this leads them to drop out of schools and colleges to take up the financial burden of their family or self-survival. Sponsor for success - Scholarships aims to bring these kids closer to their dreams.  
 Thuvakkam has initiated the program “Sponsor for Success - Scholarship” to help the kids and youngsters who are struggling to continue their education in school and college level. Students who need help, st,udy well and are parentless, single parent and/or from an underprivileged background are chosen for sponsoring post background verification. While the student’s personal details such as their age, name, faces are maintained confidential while posting requirements in open forums we update the individual sponsors privately by sharing the kids name, fee receipts and marks sheets.The funds collected will be used for paying the kids school/college fees, exam fees, books and stationery requirements. Students studying from different backgrounds Engineering, Medicine, Arts &amp; Science, Social Work, Agriculture, Literature and etc are currently being supported under this program.  
 “Education is the most powerful weapon used to change the world” we as a group who wish to see a change in the world planned to support our future generation to continue their education thereby building their weapon for the change.By sponsoring a child and supporting them in improving their knowledge through education, we believe this would help us reduce the dropout rate in schools and colleges and therefore impact and create a change in society.UPDATE: For the last fiscal year, we were able to fulfill 181 educational requests. 100+ donors had contributed to educating 50+ students. More than 62% of the students sponsored were girl students.
