For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. 21 million people in India and 1.8million people in West Bengal are disabled. Further, 55% of the disabled in India belong to margnisalised and last-mile communities. Tomorrow's Foundation’s 'Charaibeti' programme, serves children with Special Needs from the slums of Kolkata, West Bengal.The Government of India has created policies around special education, healthcare benefits and rehabilitation for people with Special Needs. However, their implementation efforts have not benefited a majority of those whom it was enacted for.Children with Special Needs from impoverished backgrounds face stigmatisation, exclusion and rejection, even within their own families. Access to education, remedial or healthcare benefits is poor at best. The negative impact of this on families and communities is immeasurable. Families and communities need to be sensitised about issues around disability, counseled how to look after their children and how to access services and benefits.High rates of poverty and illiteracy among these communities adds to the problem of accessing any intervention which is not free of charge. Procedures to obtain government benefits are often byzantine and costly. 
 Tomorrow's Foundation (Charaibeti Project ) focuses on raising overall awareness about disability issues within communities we work with, alongside specialised interventions for the children. The intervention brings special education to children who need these services and lack any means of access to other options. The activities are pedagogical, educational, recreational, behavioral and allow each child to express themselves and grow. Charaibeti also offers regular community outreach with parents to counsel them on various aspects of disability and their own responsibility to not marginalize the child. Referral and guidance for issues related to disability are offered.After a mobile outreach programme conducted inside buses as classrooms, we started a fixed location centre which operated 5 days weekly,offering a range of special services, including therapy. Closed during the pandemic due to financial constraints, we switched to an online model immediately.This model continues to run uninterrupted till date. It has proven largely successful for children who had absolutely no recourse to any form of intervention for over 2 years.Physical and speech therapy, which can only be done in person, are vital for holistic development. Primarily because of this, we are committed to setting up a fixed location centre at the earliest.A hybrid model of online teaching and in person classes will continue, as children with severe mobility or health issues will still not be able to attend regularly. 
 This project aims to increase inclusive development of a society and raise awareness around disability in marginalised communities. This would help reduce stigmatisation, exclusion and rejection. And increase respect for those who are different in any way from us.Impoverished and illiterate families will be able to access facilities and benefits for children who have a disability.Children with special needs will be able to access education, healthcare and livelihood options.Those who cannot be educated beyond a point, will be able to access skill training for self dependence.Children needing lifelong care, will learn self help skills and achieve limited independence in Activities of Daily Living.Once the centre is set up, children who have languished in the last 2 years, will have a safe space of their own.We wish there will be awareness about a happy sanctuary - where they can play, meet other children like themselves and most of all - where they will be accepted and loved as they are.

CHARAIBETI PROJECT FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Project Freedom is planned as an Urban Poverty Alleviation Intervention in the slums of Kolkata, West Bengal - where the target beneficiaries are children and adolescents engaged in exploitative labour situations, without access to education. Some have never had the opportunity to go to school and are kept at home to add to the family income. Others are school drop-outs because they cannot cope with their lessons and their social and peer environment is a deterrent. Many of the children are rag pickers. Some work in leather tanneries or leather stitching home industries. There are instances where they are the only wage earners in the family. Others support their parents and siblings as part of a family enterprise. Not all work directly in the leather industry. There are many ancillary industries of food supply, tea shops, packaging and delivery units, tyre repairs, car washing etc all of which offer jobs for children because little hands work hard and little voices do not complain about the abysmal pay and miserable working conditions. There are also other industries nearby: garment workers and embroiderers. Not too far away are the brick kilns and rice mills. The list of enterprises that employ children is endless. Such children who are forced to work are robbed of their youth, health, freedom and future. They are denied a right to live the normal life of a child: play and go to school. They are children without a future who will, by force of circumstance, perpetuate the cycle of poverty. The Mission of Project Freedom is to provide education and relevant skills to children and adolescents in vulnerable situations and collectivise them to create peer leaders’ groups to promote adolescent issues in the community and with relevant duty-bearers. 
 Overall objective: To contribute to the alleviation of poverty among the urban slum population in the city of KolkataSpecific objectives:·        To ensure access to learning opportunities for 1200 children and adolescents living in urban slums of Kolkata and engaged in hazardous economic activities through the Open School Programme, Life Skills Support, and Community Sensitization on child labour and gender equalities<ol><li> Children and adolescents will be supported to complete primary, elementary, secondary and Higher Secondary levels of education to school drop-outs and working and self-employed children.</li><li>  Life skills training forms a part of the education programme and allows adolescents participating in the programme to improve decision-making abilities about education, sexual and reproductive health, and economic and protection related issues. </li><li>  The focus will also be given to educating parents on gender issues and promoting gender equality. </li><li>  Children below 14 years of age and out of school will be mainstreamed into government formal schools</li></ol> ·        To build relevant skills among adolescents that would lead to income generation<ol><li>By 2022, children enrolled in Project Freedom will receive skill training courses. </li><li>The main purpose of these courses will be to enhance decision-making abilities and improve communication and relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship. </li><li>Ensure income generation opportunities through placement or self-employment of the candidates</li></ol> ·        To collectivise adolescents into peer leaders groups to work on child rights and child protection issueso  It is envisaged that by 2022 adolescent groups will be able to work as peer leaders o  Adolescent groups will be able to mobilise others in the communities to promote child rights and child protection issueso  Adolescent group members will engage with the urban child protection committees, local police station and other relevant stakeholders on child protection issues

Project Freedom

Findings from ASER (2018) show that in West Bengal 36.6% Govt school children of std III can read std II level text and 35.4 % Govt school children of std III can do subtraction. The national average is more alarming as both the categories stand at 20.9 %.Notwithstanding the good number of schools present in the district, the data indicates a low learning level of students at the primary level reinforces the need for an alternate methodology of teaching. From 2020 to 2022, all the primary schools were closed due to COVID pandemic. A huge learning loss was observed throughout the country , specially to those children who are depend on Government schooling system. In our experience of 36 tribal majority areas of Dubrajpur, and Md Bazer block, we found that over 95% of the children are below their expected competency levels. The condition of the children who belong from Tribal families are alarming. As per our experience , we found 95% children are below as per their age appropriate competency level. Accessibility toward the quality education of the children from tribal families are significantly low. 
 The proposed intervention intends to deploy a multi-pronged strategy over three years which will include:<ul><li>Direct intervention with children will endeavour to improve their learning level.</li><li>Promote alternative teaching methodologies and create a new breed of teachers who will be able to think outside the box.</li><li>Training and capacity building of local youth</li><li>Engagement with the community especially parents to improve enrolment, attendance, learning outcomes and better health and hygiene practices.</li></ul>Over the years, TF has worked substantially on its methodology of activity-based learning and intends to refine that during the project period to optimise its practical use within the government structure and regulations.TF will assign the resource to train the Community Teachers, and Panchayat supervisors and oversee the training outcomes in the centre.TF will provide the teachers with teaching manual hand-holding support materials for further reference and support. 
 <ul><li>Targeted students of ST families of standards I to IV/V with direct intervention show improved learning levels (grade appropriate) in grades 1-4/5 enrolled in government primary school’s/catchment areas</li><li>All students with the direct intervention will show 75% improvement on age-appropriate levels in English, Bangla and Maths</li><li>Over 40000 Parents and community members of the targeted students would be active participants improve in attitude toward child education</li><li>450 community learning centres receive support for Tribal students through Community Teachers</li><li>Grade appropriate learn grade-appropriate students will be as indicated in the grade-wise improvement table shown above</li><li>80% retention will be maintained in all the targeted schools</li></ul>

Agamir Pathshala - Bridging Learning gaps of Tribal students enrolled in government primary schools of 19 block area of Birbhum district, West Bengal

The young adolescents between the age group of 14 to 18 years of marginalized social background are not in a mindset to take education due to various social causes. And higher studies for them is a distant dream. Statistically, this age group shows the maximum school drop-outs and getting into labor intensive work to help their parents in meeting the daily family expenses. This scenario has increased manifold after the Covid-19 pandemic, with job loses being the most common issue. Moreover, the students have lost their focus on school education due to the prolonged school closure in the Covid-19 period. And online education did not have any impact with these students. 
 We train the young adolescents on various market oriented trades viz., Mobile Repair, Robotics, Beautician, Jewelry Design, Home Appliances Repair, Conversation English, Financial Literacy, Preventive Health etc. which help them to be financially independent. Providing them with these skills-set, equip them to support their school studies, their family and give an impetus to be financially independent in their future. The grants or donations we receive are for reaching out to more and more of these students and provide a torch to light up their road to successful life. Each of these trades are delivered for 60 hours to each students and they are given certificates, post their successful class completion. 
 From 2017 till Mar'22, we have reached out to more than 6500 such students in 50 State Govt Schools. The trained students have been successful in earning decent amounts upon course completion. We want to see that the initial teachings we provide result in making them become self sufficient in their life with meaningful and decent means of earning. Their economic growth will bring a change in their immediate society and thus improve the quality of living.
