I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. The problem we attempt to solve is "Poor learning levels amongst children in government secondary schools in India".  44% of children in Class 5 are only able to read Class 2 level text. Just seven out of ten children in Class 8 are able to read Class 2 text. Further Girls’ face inequitable access, participation, and learning in education. India’s Right To Education ensured near universal enrolment in elementary grades, but dropout rate at secondary is 4 times that of primary, particularly among girls. Evidence shows that girls’ educational achievement is significantly poorer than boys.Transition rate falls from 88.4% in upper primary to 67.8% in senior secondary (UDISE). The overall dropout rate in India in class 8 was at 9.3% (UDISE, 2016-17). The 13.2 million children in rural and 3.9 million children in urban government secondary schools each year need an urgent intervention that works at scale to improve their learning levels, support transition to higher education and better career opportunities. This is urgent requirement to skill what will be world’s largest workforce in 2027.  
 Transform Schools has developed a powerful 200 hour targeted instruction programme for secondary school students - Transform Learning (TL). This proven, competency based program is delivered by trained government school teachers during school hours, to build foundational competencies and pre-requisites for class appropriate competencies and improve outcomes in Science, English, Mathematics, Hindi &amp; Odia. Our programme promotes use of effective pedagogical practices including mastery learning, activity based and experiential learning, interactive methodology and peer learning which contributes to a sustained impact on teacher capacities and better student learning outcomes. Student assessments at the programme commencement and competency based worksheets and activities for students during the course of the programme aid continuous and systematic tracking of their progress and help teachers offer targeted instruction to appropriately support them. Transform Schools leverages State systems and resources to ensure systemic impact.

It has been 18 months since children in India went to school. 18 months since they studied from a chalkboard, met their peers, and dreamt with striking clarity and ambition of what the next school year will look like. Back To School

April used to be a month full of excitement- new books, new sessions, new socks! But for two years in a row now, millions of children in India have not experienced that joy. The pandemic has kept children at home, away from friends, fun, and for those without digital access, away from learning.  The struggling public education system is unable to reach students or support them, leaving kids highly vulnerable to compounded learning loss, drop out and deep emotional distress as they struggle to understand the crisis and its impact on their future. 
 Last year, we created a blended model (digital &amp; in-person) to support schools with digital teaching &amp; learning, training, professional development, and post-COVID school governance and management.This year we are rolling this out across geographies through State governments of Odisha and Chhattisgarh, partner schools in West Bengal, and technology partner DIKSHA via our community-based organisations to help students at home to continue learning while helping them cope with the pandemic. We have curated a compact activity-based 20-hour Masti ki Paathshaala programme which will support students between the ages of 10-16 years on foundational academic competencies, complemented by activities that build socio-emotional resilience.This programme is being made available to grassroots organisations free-of-cost with Transform providing resources and technical support. While the programme is digital-first for easy deployment, we have created printed resources called Masti ki Playbook to complement digital lessons, and for those with minimal or no digital access.We are looking for support to cover the cost of developing the resources, as well as cover the printing of Masti ki Playbooks for communities struggling with digital access. We believe that CBOs deserve to be supported financially for their tireless efforts, so we are also looking for funding to support them. 
 Masti ki Paathshaala aims to engage 1 million students in scholastic and co-scholastic activities, taking the learning and excitement of a summer school to their homes! Even as schools remain shut and peer contact limited, they will be able to participate in experiential learning, prevent learning losses, and build socio-emotional resilience to face the grief and loss during the pandemic.The programme will act as a platform for continuous interactions, and ensure continuity such that students are able and willing to return to school digitally or in-person, once they do reopen.All of the funds will go into actuals only. Transform will not take any management cost. In case we overshoot our ask, we will divert funds to print more Playbooks for the students.

Masti Ki Paathshaala Funwala - Summer School Programme

Despite India’s impressive economic growth, social inequality keeps more than 200 million people in poverty. According to the World Economic Forum, it will take seven generations for India’s poor to reach a mean income. Access to education, particularly for girls, is critical to ending this trend – per SDGs 4, 5 &amp; 10. Evidence shows poverty could be cut in half if all children completed secondary school. Yet, while the Indian government has invested heavily in primary education, attention at the secondary level lags. The transition from primary to secondary is low, with only 50% completing secondary school. Classroom sizes are large. Quality is inconsistent. Access to digital learning is limited. Many school management challenges exist. And teachers don’t always have the support they need to ensure good learning outcomes for all. As a result, millions of children are left behind. So the cycle of poverty continues. 
 Transform Schools, People For Action engages a broad community of teachers, families and local actors in designing and piloting educational solutions for secondary school students that governments adopt at scale.Through our models we work directly with students to address issues of learning losses caused by school dropouts, transition to secondary grades and COVID -19 related school closures. Transforms learning improvement programme to address cumulative learning losses at the secondary level in government schools has shown that it adds up 40-200% learning gains over regular student learning. This proven learning programme has  supported the re-entry of children into mainstream education via community learning interventions. We also partner with state governments to improve learning at scale and strengthen school management systems , which ultimately impacts student learning.
