“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Born with a speech and hearing impairment, Prathamesh Ramjinandan Gulve grew up in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, watching his father toil as a farmer while his mother managed their home. School was a constant struggle, lessons moved too fast, and words felt like a puzzle he couldn't solve. While his friends secured jobs and built their futures, Prathamesh felt stuck, weighed down by rejections and self-doubt. He longed to support his parents, to stand on his own feet, but every failed attempt only deepened his despair. His solace was the cricket field, where for a few hours, he could outrun his worries and feel free. Everything changed when he discovered the TRRAIN Pankh Programme meant for Persons with Disabilities. Encouraged by patient trainers, he learned essential workplace skills and, more importantly, found belief in himself. The day he secured a job at Big Basket as a Packing Associate was a moment of triumph. Holding his first paycheck, he thought of the nights filled with doubt and the quiet battles he had fought. The world may have taken his Speech and hearing impairment as a sign to silence him but thankfully he never let the noise drown his ability.

Shantagiri, Karnataka, where basic amenities like schools and hospitals are rare, Irappa's journey has been anything but ordinary. Irappa was born to Sulochanavva and Tayappa, who tirelessly worked on daily wages to support a family of five. The family was bound together by love and a determination to face life's challenges as one.  Irappa's life took a drastic turn when he was just six years old. A fall from a bullock cart on his way to school resulted in a permanent spinal injury. He spent 6 months in the hospital, battling not only physical challenges but also a deep sense of helplessness. The weight of medical expenses bore down on his parents, who earned a modest sum of INR 300 per day. They turned to their friends and family for financial support. To ease the financial burden on the family, Irappa’s younger brother had to step up and take a job that could financially support the family. As his injuries gradually healed, he grappled with the emotional weight of losing his ability to move freely, ultimately reaching the point of being labeled as disabled, which left him overwhelmed and depressed.  Amid his journey, Irappa's neighbours often taunted him about how his peers were getting ahead in their careers while he was jobless and completely dependent on his family. Amidst these comparisons, his mother emerged as his bedrock of support, giving him the positivity and motivation he needed to survive this difficult phase. Every day, she accompanied him on his way to school, becoming the source of his moral support. In a world, where giving up seemed tempting, she imparted the strength for him to stand tall. Her nurturing presence turned out to be the cornerstone of his resilience. Having finished his 12th-grade education, and a desire to ensure a steady future for his family, his job search led him to a job fair where he discovered the TRRAIN Pankh Programme. This initiative aimed to skill and provide sustainable livelihoods for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). He eagerly enrolled in the 45-day training session held in Bangalore, a decision that transformed his life forever. A silver lining emerged for Irappa when he stumbled upon an opportunity at Zomato. The company was extending delivery positions to Persons with Disabilities, offering a unique mode of transportation for deliveries: a 3-wheeler electric bike. While the bike was to be purchased by PWDs, he knew that this was his road to financial independence. His only hindrance during his job was organising the money to afford the bike. GIVE Foundation came to his rescue and helped by contributing part of the funds to purchase this bike, giving Irappa the hope to dream of a better, independent life. Now, Irappa has successfully secured a job with Zomato, earning a monthly salary of INR 15,000.His association with Zomato brought immeasurable joy to his mother, whose sole aspiration was his growth and well-being. When asked who is his role model, Irappa's answer was simple: his mother. Her daily encouragement had shaped him into a stronger person, and her motivational words – ‘Believe in Yourself and Success Will Follow’, became his guiding light. Irappa's story stands as a testament to the undefeated human spirit. His strength to stand by his mother and his family to provide for them financially, no matter the circumstances is beyond inspirational. It's a tale of unwavering faith and a tale of unbreakable bonds. Against all odds, Irappa not only found a job but a life that he could live with his head held high and a calling that carried him to the success he deserved. His journey is a reminder that within life's most challenging threads, the most beautiful stories are woven.

In the vibrant city of Pune, amidst the bustling streets, resides a remarkable boy named Sanket Varvare. At just 23 years old, he carries a burden that many cannot fathom. Sanket, a young man with Speech and Hearing Impairment (SHI), embodies resilience in its purest form. He is not just a son, but a pillar of strength within his family of six Sanket's father, Kailash, is a tireless farmer, toiling under the relentless sun to provide for his children. His monthly hard-earned income, ranges from a mere INR 12,000 to INR 15,000. Beside him stands Sanket's mother, Jaya, a formidable woman who seamlessly juggles the responsibilities of both home and farm. The family's trials do not end here, Sanket's elder sister too shares the same condition, further adding to their daily challenges. Their journey has been nothing less than a roller coaster. In Sanket's early years, he battled severe health complications until the tender age of 8. Yet, amidst the darkness that threatened to engulf them, Sanket's parents clung to a single belief – the transformative power of education. Sanket and his sister embarked on an educational journey that demanded more than just textbooks and classroom attendance. The school they attended required them to live away from the warmth of their home, a heart-wrenching decision for their parents. The annual cost for schooling of INR 1,000 was a heavy burden on their humble shoulders. However, the physical separation was bridged through sign language, they taught their parents this form of communication, a reminder that love knows no boundaries and communication does not always need a voice. Despite a childhood shadowed by adversity due to his disability, Sanket drew strength from the unwavering support of his family. Upon completing his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), he embarked on a journey with Amazon. However, this path was not without its hurdles. Physical challenges forced him to take a step back, but giving up was never an option. Sanket's indomitable spirit led him to a new opportunity, a position as a Customer Service Associate at Reliance. With a monthly salary of INR 12,456, Sanket did not just transform his own life, he became a sturdy pillar of support for his parents. Countless sleepless nights, filled with worries about their son's future, now began to dissipate. His earnest wish was to alleviate his parents from the weight of financial burdens and provide them with a comfortable life henceforth. But Sanket's dreams did not stop there. His heart aspires to emulate the entrepreneurial spirit of giants like Mukesh Ambani. His journey, his gratitude towards the TRRAIN PANKH programme, which provides comprehensive skill training to bridge the gap for PwDs. His unwavering strength are a living testament to the triumph of the human spirit over the most formidable challenges. They remind us that with the right support and opportunities, obstacles can be transformed into stepping stones toward greatness. Sanket's story isn't just about overcoming, it's about soaring to heights that defy the limits others may impose.

India has been in a complete lockdown since March 25th. Its 1.3 billion people confined to their homes with the exception of those providing essential services, some of which are the Kirana store owners, grocery employees, and delivery personnel.Due to this, an economic slowdown has hit the Indian Retail Sector especially those in the non - essential services of retail. A huge number of employees working in the Indian retail sector – Traditional, Modern, Formal, and in-formal are most likely to lose their employment or not receive their salaries in the period of the next 3 months. The average salary in Modern retail is about Rs 11,000 &amp; traditional retail stands at Rs 7,500. In a large number of families, the associates are the sole breadwinners of their families and due to the prevailing conditions, their families might face huge distress economically, financially, and mentally.  (Source: Prepared with inputs from Professionals from the retail industry via RAI) 
 We have setup a relief fund to offer and provide sustenance support to deserving retail associates and their families over the next 3 months until the COVID-19 situation comes back to normalcy. We will identify retail employees who have no means of income post-April 2020 and provide them with an income bridge for 3 months until they are able to seek alternate employment. We will leverage government schemes for short term relief as well as use the opportunity to link the beneficiaries and their families to long-term financial health solutions such as insurance and pension.The beneficiaries (retail employees) will also be on-boarded onto the TRRAIN Circle mobile app (an app to help and enable a better life for the frontline employees employed in retail &amp; another sector) to have access to over the phone counseling services, additional financial services, and E-learning courses to develop skills &amp; disbursement of financial aidThrough the Relief Grant, we will be offering to the beneficiaries:•	Rs.4000 per beneficiaries over a period of 3 months•	Enrollment to Governments of India Relief schemes for grants starting from Rs.1000/-

This problem stems from various reasons, 2 of them being:<ol><li>Lack of access to skilling/training</li><li>Lack of employment opportunities in local areas – 69% of PwDs reside in rural areas. Migration is not a  choice. Accessibility issues hinder it further .</li><li>Ignorance &amp; mindset of family, communities &amp; organizations hinders creating livelihoods as they don’t consider them to be productive members of society.</li></ol>If these problems persist the outcome can be dire. It could result in:<ol><li>Increase in unemployment rate</li><li>Further isolation of communities that otherwise live in a non inclusive society </li></ol>O 
 Pankh - Wings of Destiny is a livelihood creation program by Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India (TRRAIN) for Persons with Disabilities. Pankh provides training and skilling in retail-specific skills and life skills, further with Pankh we provide them with employment opportunities in retail and allied sectors and help them live a life of dignity and become financially independent. 
 Since its inception, Pankh has created an impact on the lives of more than 22,500 Persons with Disabilities, and our dream is to impact thousands more. With Pankh we have been able to create an impact in our beneficiaries lives by providing skilling, helping them become financially independent, better themselves, develop their personalities and improve their communication skills.Impact StoryN Lahari, a 21-year-old from Lankipalli village, Chittoor district, is a bright young girl who is visually impaired. Her father works as a carpenter, and for the longest time was the only earning member of the family. Lahari knew how hard her father worked and wanted to ease his burden by supporting her family financially. However, the journey wasn't easy, she was rejected by a lot of firms due to her poor communication skills and knowledge.  “I was tired of being rejected by everyone. I was scared to reach out to people for a job fearing that they would reject me. Because of this, my father started to search for a guy for my marriage and I was taken aback. I wanted to work and help him!” We met her family, during our mobilisation drive and counseled them about the program. She worked hard to improve her skills, thereby managing to outshine her shortcomings. After completing her training, she was able to secure a job with the Aditya Birla Group. A true hero in her very own right, her will to learn and grow ignited the new light of hope! When asked about her experience, she says:  “After I started this job, I’m more disciplined, outgoing and my priorities have changed. I want to continue to work and provide for my family. My parents are very supportive of me, especially my mom. When I got my first salary, I gave it to her. I still remember the smile on her face, it was an amazing feeling.” Her joy spread to her parents as well. Her father, N Surendra Naidu says: “I am so proud of my daughter. I never imagined her working and becoming independent. My wife and I are so happy with what she has accomplished.”

Pankh - wings of Destiny, Help Persons with Disabilities Live A Life Of Dignity And Become Financial Independent

Persons with Disabilities (PwD) form about 2.2% of our society according to the Census 2011 report. This translates into 21.9 million affected individuals. In the year 2011, about 13.4 million PwDs were in the employable age group and that number has increased since then. Out of these almost 10 million are literate and are either marginal workers or non-workers. In the employable age group, about 2.1 million are marginal workers and the other 7.8 million are non-workers. The Vocational skilling gap amongst PwDs is 9.8 million and will rise to 10.8 million by 2022 if serious skilling interventions (covering formal employment, work contracts/ other informal jobs, and entrepreneurship opportunities) are not undertaken. 
 PANKH – Wings of Destiny aims to intervene and train Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and provide them employment opportunities in the retail industry. The initiative thus aims to create sustainable livelihoods for PwDs and also promote inclusive growth in the retail sector. Our beneficiaries are persons with speech and hearing disabilities and persons with locomotor disabilities between the age of 18-28 years who have completed their SSC/ SSLC. They come from low-income communities whose families are mostly engaged in the informal sector. We also train a small percentage of youths with low vision and other disabilities under the program. Our training programs provide the complete spectrum of skills in a very interactive and easy-to-learn manner with a focus on three key skills - Life Skills, English Language Skills, and Retail Specific Skills. The youth is also provided exposure by visiting Malls covering various formats of retail – QSR, Hypermarket, Supermarket, Apparel store, Luxury store, etc. On the completion of the training programs, retail organizations are invited to evaluate and interview candidates for placements. The Programs aim to achieve a minimum of 70% placement for the trainees under the program. Since its inception in 2011, the program has been instrumental in creating livelihood for people with disabilities in the retail sector. Over 15000 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) have been trained and employed in the retail industry under this program with over 500 retailers taking benefit of the same. 
 The initiative aims to create capability and capacity to provide training and sustainable livelihood for 10,000 PwDs annually through our centers all over India by 2022.<ol><li>The impact of gainful employment is felt by the PwDs on his/her economic status, and softer aspects like confidence, attitude, reliability, etc.</li><li>Sensitize the retail industry fraternity to generate employment opportunities for PwDs </li><li>The Funds raised under this Crowd fundraiser with Train 250 Persons With Disabilities at our Centers</li></ol>

 In 2011, we took a deep dive into the dire situation between the employment gap for Persons with Disabilities and the retail sector's potential of bridging the gap. The retail sector is one of the largest sectors of the Indian economy and while it’s growing at an impressive rate, it also faces challenges related to inadequate manpower and higher attrition rates. On the other hand, the Persons with Disabilities statistics in India shows us that there is a huge untapped talent pool Understanding this, we can align them coherently and support the livelihoods of Persons with Disabilities and empower them to stand tall against society’s stigmas, and help create a more inclusive retail industry. With this thought in mind, the Pankh - Wings of Destiny program was born with the aim to create livelihood opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.  By creating livelihood opportunities for them, Pankh operates with the earnest goal of empowering them to live a life of pride and dignity. The program has successfully extended a helping hand to individuals with Speech and Hearing Impairment, Locomotive Disability, Visual Impairment and Learning Disability.
