The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Deepak lost his parents when he was very young and had to move into his Uncle’s flat. Unfortunately, he couldn’t acclimatise to his new home and so at the tender age of nine, he packed up whatever little he had and boarded a train to Delhi seeking employment in hotels.

Udayan Care took full responsibility of the young boy and moved him into an Udayan Ghar. Before joining us, Deepak could not read or write. We provided him tuition to prepare him for a mainstream school. As soon as he was ready, we had him enrolled in a good school. Now he studies in class 12, concentrating on commerce as his main subject.

Today he is a talkative, friendly and articulate young man. Each year he has excelled in academics, securing 89% in the Class 10 board exams. His dream is to pursue a B.Com from Delhi University, become a chartered accountant and complete an MBA. Anything is possible for this talented teenager!

In 2002, Ruchi, a 14 year old distressed girl, came to Udayan Ghar, Mehrauli. After her mother had died her father was unable to care of her, leaving Ruchi with very little hope. But we were there to pick up the pieces left behind by her family and took her under our wing.

Now a part of the Udayan family, Ruchi receives all the love and care she has always deserved. She completed her education and honed her skills. Her hard work and tenacity has lead her to the position of trainee with the JW Marriot Group’s hotels in Pune. Excitingly the hotel recently gave Ruchi her first flying experience and flew her to Jaipur for a workshop.

Ruchi says, “I want to excel at my work and travel to many more places!”

India is home to 31 million orphans who neither have access to food nor education. With no family or support, these children are deprived of their basic rights and remain marginalised from the rest of society. Horrifyingly, most of them are abused, exploited, and are involved in illegal activities in order to survive on the streets.There are only 75,000 orphanages and shelters in India, most lacking long term care in a family like setting, counselling, or emotional bonding. Furthermore, adoption rates sit at a very low 0.18%. Based on the belief that a loving home and family is the right of every child, Udayan Ghars are long term, group residential homes that nurture children without parental care, in a family-like environment, through a strategy called L.I.F.E – Living In Family Environment. There are single and multi- unit Udayan Ghars, wherein 12 children (6-18 years) constitute a unit, allowing individual attention to each child. This ‘Group Care’ model ensures children are loved and cared for by a group of Mentor Parents – long term volunteers, with the help of a team of caregivers, social workers, and mental health professionals. Udayan Ghars are located in middle-class neighbourhoods to help children integrate with mainstream society. Children receive quality education in some of the best schools. Once they reach the age of 18 years, they are supported through our Aftercare Programme and continue with higher education or vocational training towards economic independence. Since its inception in 1996, Udayan Ghars have nurtured 1436 children. Presently, 194 children (143 girls &amp; 51 boys) live at our 17 Udayan Ghars, in 4 states - Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan and 45 young adults are being supported through our Aftercare Programme. Sponsor homes for orphaned and abandoned children

In India, girls’ education is often considered the lowest priority, in particular girl’s higher education. According to current transition rates, a girl who enters her final year of primary education (typically Class V) still only has a 54% chance of even starting Class XI. This does not even include girls who drop out during primary school or never attend school at all! The highest percentage of girls drops out between Class X and Class XI. Currently, out of every 100 graduates, only 38 are women (Census 2011).India continues to be a country which largely values a girl’s marriage over her education. Among the lower-income groups, a girls’ higher education is often seen as an unaffordable luxury given a family’s financial constraints and preference to allocate resources to sons rather than daughters. This is coupled with cultural and social stigmas, perceptions and prohibitions, which act against the education of a girl child. All of this adds up to stack the deck against a girl acquiring a degree and reaching her potential.Hence, making a conscious choice to support the higher education of girls, Udayan Care began Udayan Shalini Fellowships in 2002 in Delhi with just 72 girls. 
 Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme of Udayan Care is a unique academic excellence and personality development programme for deserving and talented girls from weak socio-economic background aiming to turn them into empowered and dignified women or Shalinis. It is unique because it goes beyond being a usual scholarship programme by not only supporting higher education but also providing them with individual attention, counselling and grooming through personalised mentoring to assure their mental, moral and over-all development. They are also provided with opportunities to widen their horizon of knowledge on various fields like career choices, social issues and personality development.Moreover, a 5 year planning of employability workshops with defined modules has been developed, which are delivered regularly and progressively to enable the girls to become employable, ranging from writing resumes, facing interviews, etiquettes in office, etc., by the time she finishes her studies. These regular workshops not only motivate them to seek employment after graduation, but also prepare them for entry level jobs. Lastly, the girls develop social sensitivity and a sense of responsibility, so that they give back once they become independent and start earning. 
 Through the USF programme, we aim to transform the lives of 40 Shalinis and their communities by ensuring there is non-disruption in studies for the girls so that there is increased employment opportunities for them. Moreover, the Shalinis get a better understanding of life due to the various workshops, and personalised mentoring, which leads to increase in self-confidence, self-esteem and aspirations and the ability of Shalinis to take independent decisions.Due to financial and moral support provided by USF programme, the Shalinis see an improved quality of life as they can continue their studies further, look after their families and serve society. Additionally, the parents have stopped forcing their daughter for early marriage as they see an opportunity for their daughters to continue their studies and become employable while adding value to their lives. Many of the earlier beneficiaries are now well settled in life as Chartered Accountants, engineers, doctors, nurses, teachers etc.The Shalinis not only support their families with money and informed decisions regarding life matters, they also participate in mentoring the new Shalinis by becoming active mentors; and enthusiastically work for nation building by becoming actively engaged in developing others, who are less fortunate than themselves.

Support an underprivileged girl to continue school

A family anchors us. Strong family support makes strong adults. But there are many families who fall apart for a multiplicity of reasons – financial crunch, disease, loss of earning member, vices, and addictions, lack of skill, or just strong patriarchal and or regressive social values. When family structures weaken, small children and young persons are the most impacted. We, at Udayan Care, understand that family care and protection are at the core of every child’s development without which they cannot grow up to be dignified independent individuals. Our programs are designed around strengthening families. 
 “Udayan Care believes that strong families make strong individuals and strong individuals make stronger families.  Udayan Care works to empower vulnerable children, women, and youth, in 34 cities across 15 states of India. Let us illustrate the impact of our programs through Shweta's story. “Imagine coming from a family which didn’t have the means to support me to saving hundreds of families during the Covid-19 outbreak,” says Shweta, a nurse at a hospital in Kolkata. Let’s rewind back to a few years. Shweta’s father runs a small stationary shop that can barely support their daily expenses. She had big dreams but decided not to burden her father and got enrolled at a government school. One day her teacher told her about the Udayan Shalini Fellowship Program. Shweta got selected for the program and began a journey of empowerment. She trained to be a Nurse. Today, not only does she sustain her family but also helps numerous other families through her services as a Nurse.  Shweta was the fearless COVID warrior who worked tirelessly during the pandemic to save numerous lives and her family couldn’t be more proud of her.  We have the potential to make many more empowered women, skilled youth, and stronger families. Making Families Stronger

Children under 18 years of age are an important population category of India not only due to their numerical strength as they constitute 35 percent of the country’s 1.38 billion population but also due to their vulnerability to abuse, deprivation, and abandonment. The children growing up in institutional care have to leave care homes on turning 18 years of age. These young adults are highly vulnerable and at risk of abuse and exploitation. They require support in multiple forms – counseling &amp; mental health support, financial support to complete their education or learn a vocational skill, a safe accommodation, life skills to navigate independent living, and access to a mentor for guidance and support.There are millions of children who get separated from their families due to poverty, forced child labour, early marriage, exposed to aggravated smuggling, subjected to human trafficking, and put at risk of violence and exploitation. Such children are vulnerable and need stability, and protection, and deserve holistic development.   
 Based on the belief that a loving home and family is the right of every child, Udayan Ghars are long-term, group residential homes that nurture children who are orphaned, abandoned, or at-risk, in a family-like environment, through a strategy called L.I.F.E – Living In Family Environment. This ‘Group Care’ model ensures children are loved and cared for by a group of Mentor Parents – long-term volunteers who are assisted by a team of caregivers, social workers, and mental health professionals. Children receive a quality education, vocational training, and mental health support. After reaching the age of 18 years, they are supported through our Udayan Ghar Aftercare Program which includes counseling in transition planning, employability skills, higher education, internships, and jobs. Under this program, the young adults are offered safe accommodation, a monthly stipend to manage their monthly expenses and their academic fee or vocational training fee is borne by the program. They are encouraged to learn how to live independently through gentle, yet firm mentoring and a lot of exposure training programs. The Program team supports them by getting their identity papers in order and also connecting them with other government welfare schemes. The program also supports them by organizing and paying for their wedding. 
 Since its inception, we have supported 134 young adults under our Aftercare Program and 146 adults are a part of our Alumni network. During the month of July, 53 young adults are currently being supported and being provided holistic care and guidance. Approximately, 81% of young adults are pursuing their education in schools, colleges, and through distance learning. Moreover, 10% of the young adults are engaged in a job or internship while pursuing their education while 5% are only involved in jobs or internships and are gradually moving towards self-reliance. Our holistic approach aims at helping young adults in becoming capable, self-reliant, and socially responsible citizens.
