“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. The unemployment rate in India is around 10% of the total work force, out of which a staggering 48 million are young adults. Most of them possess some form of formal education and are willing to work but have little to no opportunities.At Sree Guruvayurappan Bhajan Samaj Trust, our Unnati program, which means “uplifting” in Sanskrit, provides vocational education combined with spoken English lessons; basic computer skills; values; and life skills, to underprivileged 18 to 25-year-old students, enabling them to find gainful employment. To this day, we have successfully found jobs for over 10,000 students.We offer a 35-day vocational training programme, to the least educated, unemployed and economically backward with an assured job at the end of the training period. Moreover, students from BPL sectors are provided with free accommodation and food throughout the programme.All training areas cater to the demands of the market, including courses in sales, customer services, industrial tailoring, security services, driving, and paramedics. On completion of the course, all students are placed within reputable companies including TCS, Titan, Aubonpain, First Source, Taj Hotels, Big Basket and more.Unnati also provides financial support to disadvantaged young children under the Shiksha programme so they continue to feel encouraged to complete their studies.Our aim is to train and employ over a million young people over the next ten years and are collaborating with various other NGOs and government agencies to achieve this goal.

Lakshaman Reddy lost his father when he was 18 years old, and as a consequence, lost the only source of income his family had. Forced by the circumstances, Lakshman had to give up on his dream of getting a college education, while a simple school certificate was not enough for him to get a good job. With no one to guide him and no resources to study further, he had lost all hopes for the future.

Luckily, one of his friends had previously joined one of our 70-day vocational training programmes and had recommended the work we do to Lakshaman. This saw him go on to join the very next group of participants for our 17th consecutive programme. The training he underwent at Unnati helped him to improve his soft skills, computer literacy and spoken English.

Today, he works as a medical representative in one of the big Indian Pharma Companies, M/s Indoco Remedies Ltd, with a CTC of over 4 lakhs. He can now fully support his family and provide them with a comfortable and debt-free life.

Great turn of events for Lakshaman

Shilpa is a 13 year-old girl whose family couldn’t afford to send her to school on the Rs. 1500 a month her father earned as a carpenter. When Unnati found her, we quickly admitted her back into education and committed to paying for the rest of her time at school.

Now Shilpa is studying in grade 7 and scored a dazzling 75% in her last academic year. Her parents couldn’t be more proud of the progress she has made since joining Unnati and have seen a positive change in her character.  Shilpa is now a confident and enthusiastic student who is excited to explore the different career paths available to her to ensure she has a bright future.

The public education system is failing to keep pace with the demand of the new market and is often of poor quality, leaving an army of young people trailing behind. 
 The students of our 50-day Unnati training programme are divided into different categories and given training in a skill that suits their abilities.Unnati have various training courses in admin assistant, retail sales & marketing, guest care, beautician, for bed side attendant and driving for women conditions apply. We endeavour to provide students with modern classrooms, fully equipped with a computer lab, kitchen, dining hall and library. The last week of training is called the placement period, where we commit to finding the perfect job for all students. So far we have provided jobs to 100% of those who have studied with us. 
 Thus far, Unnati have placed over 10,000 students in reputable companies including TCS, Aubonpain, Taj Hotels, First Source and more; providing people with sustainable jobs as well as the dignity, self confidence and soft skills to become a better citizen within society. The average cost to train a youth is Rs. 12,000, and will support all of their expenses throughout the training period.

According to India’s World Bank, 8.1 million children were estimated to not be in attendance at school. With no qualifications or employable skills, they stand no chance of getting a good job later in life. Ultimately, educational costs are too high for disadvantaged parents. With 37% of the population currently below the poverty line, over 400,000,000 people can't afford basic necessities such as food and shelter. Therefore, educational costs are seen as a luxury. 
 Our programme Shiksha, which means &quot;education&quot;, provides financial assistance to over 400 underprivileged children every year. Scholarships are given based on the scores and grades of students, cover a part of the educational expense, and are paid directly to the school concerned. 
 Unnati have managed to support over 400 underprivileged students every year since the beginning of the programme. We hope to support the educational needs of as many children as possible so they are fully equipped to lead a respectable and fulfilling life.

The food cost per day costs us Rs. 3,000/-. We are seeking your support to provide food to these youth during their training period. 
 India has a large percentage of youth who do not have access to formal / higher education. Around 80% of them don’t even reach 10th standard. Under privileged youth by and large lack direction and purpose in life. Left unattended, these youth could potentially turn to be non-productive and end up being anti-social elements in the society. Transforming such youth to self-respecting, confident individuals, capable of making right choices in life is our sole mission. Unnati enables unemployed youth from economically weaker sections of the society to seek a steady employment, thus augmenting their family income, and raising their standard of living. Any youth aged 18yrs and above can enroll for the course. Unnati strives to inculcate the youth with values and life skills that help them become a part of the main stream and enables them to live with dignity and pride. The principal focus is on the underprivileged sector, enabling them life and vocational skills to secure a decent livelihood. The impact of Unnati’s intervention is a job in hand, immediately after they complete training. With your support, we will be providing hospitality for these underprivileged youth during the training period and stay with us. We are proposing to provide food for the no. of youth getting trained over the period of stay with us. i.e 240 youth per year, considering 20-25 youth per batch in our 35days program.  
 We are talking of inclusive growth, guaranteed job after training and change agents with values. This is indeed unique to our program. The youth has a job after training. Unnati was formed with 3 basic principles: ·        If we train someone, they must be given a job. ·        They must be part of the inclusive society. ·        They must be change agents in the society from where they come. Unnati program impacts our youth in a such a way that, at end of training each &amp; every youth’s attitude changes, his/ her confident levels improves , overcome stage fear, the youth is moulded to become employable, his/ her maturity levels improves, this whole transformation in the youth happens in a short period of just 35 days. This helps the uneducated youth to get corporate jobs with social securities in 35 days. This program enables them not only to become employable, but also to become ambitious, dream big, set goals and progress in life.Secondly, ours is probably the only program which guarantees the job in just 35 days. The methodology and the implementation of the training is quite unique and very different from regular trainings.  The Impact of the youth can be broadly categorized at Individual Level, Workplace Level, Social Level, and Behavioral Level etc. “A generation goes above poverty line in just 35 days—forever”.
