And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Our Art Library & life (ALL) programme for institutions in the space of education to make engaging with texts exciting and enriching for children. The ALL programme aims to enhance reading & literary skills through a collaborative arts approach. The approach uses a blend of visual arts, theatre, music, dance, movement and storytelling thereby providing children with a variety of means & methods to explore literature. It also has sessions designed for teachers and parents aimed at fostering a culture of engaging with books. The main objectives of the programme are to provide a sustaining environment for Exciting, enriching & creative engagement with books, Facilitation of experiences with various art forms, Enhancement of language & life skills (LSRW & SEL), Cognitive development, Development of social skills & empathy, Creating cultural equity. Our unique applied art & theatre workshop for teachers equips teacher with creative teaching methods & techniques, engaging facilitating skills, teaching modalities of inquiry learning, process drama and expert framing, class presence & moment of truth, tools & techniques of building connection & retaining attention of students, art of storytelling and using art and performance as tools for teaching non art subjects. Our programmes for higher educational institutes using art to teach Indian knowledge systems is a unique way of incorporating the subject to address understanding the depth of Indian culture, heritage, values & knowledge and its application to the present world and career challenges. We offer creative art-based engagements to higher education institutions for both students & faculty in an endeavour to create educational campuses in making them inclusive.

Art & theatre based workshops, performances & dialogue on Gender constructs, hierarchy & power dynamics, exploring femininity y & masculinity & what it is to be a man or a woman in today’s world, exploring personal agency, autonomy, body & boundaries, freedom & choice, emotion & expression, gender based constructs & beliefs, equity & equality. We run an ensemble of plus size actors called The Big Fat Company which talks about gender & body politics & positivity through performances & workshops. 

Women Empowerment

There are more than 2000 students completing their formal education in fine arts, theatre, music and dance. But most of them end up not being able to practice their art form because of inability to support their livelihood through arts practice. By creating & developing a web of self-sustaining of cultural living rooms among communities we are aiming to build an art educated community that will subscribe to the arts enabling livelihood of artists. We train artists on applied art and pedagogy of teaching art to help them practice aspects of their arts vision to ear a living.

We use theatre and art through performances, workshops & visual art to educate community in aspects of preventing cruelty, providing care, humane treatment & kindness towards other life forms, changing mindsets and attitudes towards animals, developing a viewpoint of treating animals as sentient beings with inherent values. Our initiatives & interventions aim at developing basic civic sense that enables conserving natural habitats and responsible pet ownership.

Our specifically designed visual art & theatre initiatives & interventions  works towards educating and advocating to a set of diverse communities across various demographics and localities in aspects of the role they play and what they can do towards protection of natural resources, promoting sustainable practices, pollution, conservation, need for stronger environmental laws, community engagement, promoting scientific understanding,  supporting the government and other organisations in initiatives to implement and amplify environmental & sustainable practices.

Art & culture is a very strong medium and a tool which enables us to work with the government & other organisations to support them in areas of social development, educating the community on importance of education, prevention of child marriages, reproductive health of women, sustainable resource management, enhance community participation in development activities, and life skills training to enhance employability. The arts practice is one of the best ways to promote fundamental rights, educate community on equality & dignity for all. We use creative customised applied art & theatre based initiatives like workshops, performances exhibitions, community art projects that specifically open dialogue and bring community together towards combating discrimination, safeguarding constitutional rights, developing ways to access basic necessities for all, empowering marginalised communities like women, people with disabilities etc and move towards fostering a just & equitable society. 

Human Rights

We run various initiatives for children. The Sunday reading at Untitled space is a free rehearsed reading performance aimed at developing reading habits and introducing them to various work of literature, performances and workshops in theatre, visual arts, music, dance & creative writing. We have worked with children on storytelling and writing and are in the process of publishing a book written and illustrated by children. We do summer workshops for underprivileged urban and rural children where they get to perform for an audience and showcase their artistic talents.

Untitled Arts Foundation is a company registered under Section 7, now 8 or 25 of the Companies Act as an NGO. Our work focuses on community development through art &amp; culture and developing cultural equity. We are an organisation creating spaces within &amp; for communities to engage, experience, build capacity &amp; collaborate in the arts and culture, to develop vital communities and build strong social capital. Untitled Arts will be the heart of the future network, raising capacities for cultural living rooms that are self-sustaining, vibrant, diverse, and organic art micro life systems within communities that will work among &amp; within themselves. Our current initiatives are in Arts education, creating and curating cultural living rooms, Gender, diversity, and inclusion, Skill development of artists, artists’ livelihood, applied art for community development, Indian Knowledge systems, making of visual, performing &amp; literary art, Arts engagement, and other art and culture related creative work.  We work with children and young adults in Rural and urban areas. Presently, our geographic reach is in Urban &amp; Rural Karnataka and Arunachal Pradesh.
