I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. In 2018, Upkram started working passionately at Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, which is one of the bottom 20 districts on Education ranking on NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Districts Programme delta ranking with a vision to bring educational equity and change the narratives to a positive one. We believe that every child irrespective of gender, ethnicity, and geography has the right to quality education and to reach their highest potential.On 16th March 2020, Upkram was registered as a non-profit organisation (section 8 company), and an organized effort was initiated with a focus to engage with children from marginalized communities i.e., Dalit, Bahujan and Adivasi groups (DBA) and create a contextual learning environment for them. We do this by focusing on three areas – providing opportunities for experiential learning, exposure to diverse pedagogical practices to develop critical skills, and ensuring the emotional well-being of students.We are working on the problem of “Low learning outcomes due to foundational language and literacy challenges of children in underserved communities.”Our focus challenge areas are -·        Lack of conducive learning environment- The learning process is not inclusive and devoid of the learner’s home environment·        Ineffective teaching practices- Emphasis is still on rote based-traditional methodologies and with biased strong beliefs·        Lack of access to quality learning resources- Unaware of the availability of contextual and quality literature
