“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. It being part of Pallisree, the largest nursery organisation in West Bengal makes it easier to work on ecological restorations.We are partnering with WWF West Bengal to create a nursery for elephant fodder and repellant plantation to restore fragmented habitats of North Bengal Terai elephant corridors.The NGO’s sole mission and vision has been to intricately work on restoration of fragmented corridors in South Bengal and recreate the rich biodiversity which was at one point a region dedicated to rich flora and fauna but with the advent of population explosion it has got largely fragmented causing man-animal conflict and mass extinction of flora and fauna. This has also broken the connected ecosystem between Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal. Uttarayan is a registered Trust set up in 1986, with the primary objective of providing support and guidance to children, as well as Adults with special needs and mental handicaps which restrict their ability to lead normal lives. Over the past 3 decades, Uttarayan has been striving to help its students and their guardians meet life's challenges in attempting to integrate with the mainstream of society. The emphasis at Uttarayan is to make learning and growing-up a 'fun' activity. As a result of which the students are always happy and cheerful.Due to the pandemic COVID 19, the differently able residents were stuck at the facility and not being able to interact with their family and about 5 kids lost their parents to the pandemic. This had caused tremendous stress and extreme psychological disorders among the residents. 
 To keep the differently able residents gainfully pre occupied to reduce stress, the NGO provided materials to make paper bags, jute bags, diyas so that they could be less stressful and be empowered to generate basic costs. The NGO also has an objective of sustainability in their teachings and activities by the residents. It not only helps reduce psychological disorders but also helps with environment. The unique statement is when a deprived population of differently able people also learn to be self sustainable while caring for the environment. We would like to continue and scale up the self sustainability livelihood training and production for which we appeal for funds to buy materials and machines to continue our objective.

Empowerment of Differently Able People from Uttarayan

Amphan followed by Yaas has largely destroyed the whole ecosystem and livelihood of people in sensitive areas of Sunderbans. It also saw a surge of relief materials brought by NGOs in plastic covers including small water pouches. Those have now become a permanent residue which is the making of a catastrophe in a sensitive ecosystem like Sundarbans.“We have done a preliminary survey that reveals around 26 metric tonnes of plastic have already entered Sundarbans post the cyclone. Several non-profits, local clubs and individuals have made a beeline to provide relief material to the people. The dry ration kits for 5-6 families are being supplied in plastic bags weighing around 9 kilograms despite Sundarbans being a Ramsar site and a blanket ban on the use of plastic. Truck loads of plastic is being brought every day putting its natural vegetation to high risk,” said Sourav Mukherjee, director of Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage, a non-profit working to provide alternative livelihood to locals in Sundarbans.﻿With daily tides, plastic gets carried away too far off places getting stuck in small rivulets, creeks in forest areas, adds to river pollution.This impact won’t be limited to only humans since such waste will not only clog the flow of water but will largely damage the sensitive biodiversity of Sundarbans.

PLASTIC WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM POST AMPHAN AND YAAS RELIEF WORK IN SUNDARBANS

Sundarban has been protecting the city of Kolkata from cyclones as a buffer zone. However, with climate change, severe cyclones have become frequent destroying vast tracts of land area and inundating with saline water. With the anthropogenic pressure of agriculture, fishing, illegal encroachment the carrying capacity of this fragile ecosystem has been stressed. Two severe cyclonic storms Amphan (2020) and Yash (2021) have destroyed the ecosystem, habitation and agriculture fields, plunging the entire region into crisis. With high salinity (we tested EC as high as 17), resulting from inundating water, terrestrial and freshwater aquatic cultivation has become impossible. 
 We focus on two broad landscapes:a.    Agricultural fieldsb.    Embankment/riverside/ degraded mangrove areas.For the category Agricultural fields:·      Focus- The cultivated fields of the 54 inhabited islands.·      These islands have very few embankments or vegetation remaining and a lot of trees were also cut to patchwork repair of embankments.·      We take an agricultural field adjoining a village and divide it into two parts.o  Commercial (10%): It will be The Biofloc system, which is an innovative system where fish can be produced in artificial tanks with high densities. It requires much lesser space than the traditional form of fish farming. The biofloc has reduced climate risk as they are reasonably strong structures and far more resistant to strong winds than a paddy crop exposed to nature.o  Conservation (90%) Rest 90 % will be reforestation with mangrove species and a few salt-tolerant non-mangrove species.For the category Embankment/riverside/degraded mangrove areas:·      Method proposed is scientific reforestation 
 The commercial area will provide alternative livelihood and food security.The conservation area will restore mangroves and sequester carbon.Converting agricultural land to agroforestry and biofloc will ensure food security during climatic hazards.Planting Mangroves along the river stretch will help minimize damage due to natural calamities like cyclones, floods.Women would be the first level workforce which will indirectly address empowerment and the rising issue of trafficking
