“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Although Indian family as a social institution is well known for the emotional and physical support that it provides to its extended members, many times it fails to respond to the needs of women, especially for women in a difficult circumstance like widows, destitute and deserted women, women ex-prisoners, victims of sexual abuse and crimes, including those trafficked and rescued from brothels, migrant or refugee women who have been rendered homeless due to natural calamities like flood, cyclone, earthquake, mentally challenged women, women victims of terrorist violence etc.Often the support of immediate or extended family is not available due to reasons ranging from economic instability of the family to provide such support to the breakdown of the joint family system to the social bias against the marginalized women as also the attitude and value attached to such women. Sometimes society itself drives such women out of the system to lead lives of sub-human existence. More often vulnerable women in distress end up as beggars or prostitutes for their own survival and at times for survivals and maintenance of their dependent children. Also, Women are given poor education and subjected to poor living conditions, strained family relationships and specifically oppression, violence, sexual abuse, subordination, and devaluation inherent in patriarchal oppression. Society has a significant presence of a large number of socially disowned women such as widows, abandoned divorcees, and victims of deceit and cheating; besides a number of women and their parents or husbands discard young girls after becoming victims of rape, single mother etc. The number of homeless women is increasing day by day. We also noticed there are many Divyang women (deaf-mute) who are suffering from different types of violence(domestic/sexual abuse, mental torture, etc.) cannot speak for themselves and need legal help or any other kind of help/support for themselves. In most of the cases when these women suffer from any kind of violence or torture are stranded by their own family and are in need of immediate help and shelter (we would like to help them with the same)For such destitute women, an organization or a temporary shelter is required where a number of dependent/ destitute is taken care of. Special needs of these women are properly taken care of and under no circumstances they should be left unattended or abandoned which could lead to their exploitation and desolation. They require help and guidance to regain confidence in them, to meet the situation and to acquire skills/training to become self-reliant and to develop, relationships with people that could help in the re-establishment of their status and themselves back in society.  
 Women with their children,old-aged and girls who left their homes on account of family tension or discord and are, as a consequence emotionally disturbed, victims of mental maladjustment, sexually assaulted victims and those facing social ostracism for a variety reasons and due to many issues are in need of immediate help or temporary shelter.Our NGO “Vama Jankalyan Sewa Samiti” runs a Project “SeetaAshray” since the year 2005, where we take cases of women irrespective of their caste, creed or religion, who are physically or mentally ill-treated, we offer them counselling and shelter, as well as guidance to secure legal, medical and financial help whenever needed to become self-reliant and financially independent.<ul><li>  With the temporary residential shelter, women are provided with emotional support, counselling, awareness generation and behavioural training</li><li> Along with the provision of food, clothing, medical treatment and care of the women and their children in distress and who are without any social and economic support.</li><li> For Rehabilitation they are given vocational training /skill up-gradation training (as per their ability to learn ) to make financially independent to such women.</li><li> Also, provide them with legal aid and guidance to enable them to take necessary steps for their readjustment in family/society.</li></ul><blockquote>“Seetashray” is not just a place to have shelter, we try to provide all destitute women with a homely environment to enjoy, learn to become self-dependent and just come out of their past ill-treatment given by their own people. Apart from shelter homes for destitute women, we want to initiate with shelter for women/girls in need with the disability of being deaf-mute and old-aged. So they can be brought together into the mainstream of society.</blockquote>Beneficiaries: <ul><li>Women or old aged people who are deserted and are without any family support;</li><li> Widows survivors of natural disaster who have been rendered homeless and are without any social and economic support;</li><li> Women victims of domestic violence, family tension or discord, are made to leave their homes without any means of subsistence and have no special protection from exploitation and/ or facing litigation on account of marital disputes;</li><li>Trafficked women/girls rescued or run away from brothels or other places where they face exploitation.</li><li>Those who escape from their homes due to family problems, mental/physical torture and need shelter, psychiatric treatment and counselling for their rehabilitation and re-adjustment in family/ society.</li><li> Women affected by HIV/AIDS; Women prisoners released from jail and are without family, social and economic support;</li><li> Widows survivors of natural disaster who have been rendered homeless and are without any social and economic support;</li><li> Includes destitute women(Deaf-Mute) disability with above-mentioned issues.</li></ul> 
 A large number of women are homeless because they have escaped situations of violence at home or are turned out of their homes for various reasons, including HIV and mental illness. Homeless women, particularly young women, suffer the worst kinds of violence and insecurity and are vulnerable to sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.When distress/violence victim/deserted/destitute women old aged are able to provide with the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing and strongly surround herself mentally &amp; emotionally with the love and support, then they are motivated to achieve the other needs in the hierarchy and move towards achieving it with full potential.Women in Distress are in immediate need for temporary shelter where they can be helped and taken care emotionally through counselling, provided with legal and medical help/facilities if needed along with daily needs of food, clothing etc. Once they regain their confidence and positive towards their future, they are being rehabilitated as per their desires like, if they again want to go back to their families or they want to become self-dependent (they are given vocational training or they are counselled several times even their families are counselled Or if they want to live independently they are helped with getting better income opportunities) hence restored back to the society.<ul><li>Under this project, there have been more than 500 women &amp; 450 children Beneficiaries who are provided with given shelter, training and support. </li><li>We helped 5 girls to get settle in their lives and help them to get married. </li><li>Around 3500 cases were positively compromised and settled through family counselling provided by our Counselor. </li><li> Around 2500 women were given a different kind of income-generating training and are now financially independent and helping their family economically. </li><li> Around 5000 women were counselled/trained and helped with micro-financing for establishing their own small business.</li></ul>Our Shelter home ”SeetaAshray” provide essential aspects of protection, services and resources which enable women who have experienced abuse and their children to recover from the violence, to rebuild self-esteem, and to take steps to regain a self-determined and independent life. It also contributes to awareness-raising and social change as part of broader efforts to prevent violence against women and girls altogether.
