We have seen people picking food from the garbage out of extreme hunger.”, recalls Ayesha of Mitti Cafe, while talking about the extent of hunger faced by senior citizens. According to Ayesha, there are thousands of elderly who have been either chucked out of their homes or have been left behind in villages by their children. “Our elderly don't deserve this life and it is our responsibility to come to their aid. But their job is not yet done. “There are still many villages which have many malnourished and hungry seniors and we have not been able to reach them. “A blind child is seen as a curse or as a burden to the family. These children are left on the street. I have picked up children from roadsides myself. I also lost my eyesight as a child but today I am a senior officer in a public sector company. Since its inception in 1989, over the three decades, VASANTHAM has empowered thousands of individuals with special needs and their families. VASANTHAM functions with a mission statement of empowering every individual with special needs to be as independent as possible. Services such as special education, communication therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vocational training, yoga, dance, music, play and several activities are provided based on every student’s interest and needs.Vasantham is a NGO that runs predominantly through support from several well-wishers and organisations.

Despite the increased incidence of developmental disorders such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, learning disability, cerebral palsy and multiple disability, professional services available are limited. Further, acceptance by family and society is also a challenge. 
 Vasantham provides professional support to these individuals through special education, communication therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pre-vocational training, vocational training, yoga, dance, play and music therapies. Children and adults with special needs at Vasantham function with individualized programme plan, designed to strengthen their abilities and function as independent as possible. This is done through multidisciplinary team working in collaboration with the family. 
 Over 30 years, Vasantham has empowered thousands of individuals with special needs and their families. This individualised programme for individuals with special needs will continue to support approximately 134 children and adults at Vasantham to function as independently as possible. Further, Vasantham's awareness activities will continue sensitizing general public about developmental disorders.
