“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. “A blind child is seen as a curse or as a burden to the family. These children are left on the street. I have picked up children from roadsides myself. I also lost my eyesight as a child but today I am a senior officer in a public sector company. Despite the increased incidence of developmental disorders such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, learning disability, cerebral palsy and multiple disability, professional services available are limited. Further, acceptance by family and society is also a challenge. 
 Vasantham provides professional support to these individuals through special education, communication therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pre-vocational training, vocational training, yoga, dance, play and music therapies. Children and adults with special needs at Vasantham function with individualized programme plan, designed to strengthen their abilities and function as independent as possible. This is done through multidisciplinary team working in collaboration with the family. 
 Over 30 years, Vasantham has empowered thousands of individuals with special needs and their families. This individualised programme for individuals with special needs will continue to support approximately 134 children and adults at Vasantham to function as independently as possible. Further, Vasantham's awareness activities will continue sensitizing general public about developmental disorders.
