If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. It is said that the only thing constant in life is change. A lot has happened since we began our work with marginalized communities about 19 years ago back in 2001. Various policy changes in government and resulting developments have been instrumental in making us review and revise our own systems and policies at Vatsalya. If you read our latest annual report, you will see a lot of these changes being implemented in the form of a number of major initiatives, the most significant and consequential being our Seven-to-Seven program for destitute children. This new program has replaced our full-time residential care program which has benefited hundreds of orphaned and abandoned children over the last 18 years. Secondly, after becoming a fully solar-energy operated campus, Vatsalya is also taking a lead in other environmental interventions, hoping to make it a cleaner and healthier place for us all to live. There are other exciting initiatives being launched, in addition.In the areas of health and HIV/AIDS, we have been fortunate to have the sustained financial support of the state government as well as a major corporate house. The projects on HIV/AIDS are continuing with the decade-old support of RSACS and JK Tyre, particularly in treating Sexually Transmitted Infection including HIV and AIDS. As part of these projects, we have conducted numerous health camps with outreach community services including treating HIV patients and their counseling. The skill development and economic empowerment projects for women, including commercial sex workers, are implemented in Ajmer and Jaipur with the support of Anchal (USA), iPartner (UK), Anoothi (India) and Fullerton (India). Hundreds of women are earning a decent livelihood as a result of this project.Our residential care program for street children has been modified and transformed in a major way about which you will read in detail in the report. Our cherished partners in this life-changing mission are multiple small foundations, private charities and individuals from across the world who are committed to support us in facilitating the holistic development of poor children. Our renewable energy team has made the entire campus a carbon-free zone and the volunteers from Australia have provided significant support in it by not only raising funds for it but also by being there on the ground, assisting our team to build various systems and resources for a cleaner and greener environment. Namaste India Children’s Fund (USA), Benares Schoolfund Foundation (The Netherlands), Give Foundation (India) and many of our long term friends remain with us as strong and committed supporters. Some are as old as the organization itself! The school library building and the Vatsalya Science Center are our two new great additions to the campus that will go a long way in helping children enhance their learning and knowledge. Completion of the Black Belt Karate program has been one of the greatest achievements this year. Our blessings are countless and we feel very grateful for being so privileged.

Vatsalya society (located in Jaipur) runs a school up to 10th class for children coming from marginalized communities. Since the children come from very poor families, the onus remains on us to bring them to school (full-time and part-time) as the parents generally lack long-term vision and often don't understand the value of attending school. Given a choice, they would rather use them to generate some extra income, either directly or indirectly for immediate support of the family by any means. We see clear evidence of it when we compare the children being picked up by Vatsalya transport with the children coming on their own. The rate of absenteeism is much higher in children not coming by school transport, and so is the rate of dropout in the same group.Vatsalya has one bus and one jeep that ferries children to and fro from the school. Looking at the strength of the school (100 children in total), another vehicle would most certainly help in transporting children comfortably and in time to and from school. In the absence of proper transport for the children, we will either have to reduce the number of children or let their education remain uncertain and at the mercy of the circumstances.Vatsalya was started in 2000 with a vision and mission to create a model village for marginalized children. Vatsalya campus has four major functions: providing safe, healthy, and nurturing living space, providing education up to 10th, providing ample opportunity for excellence in sports and cultural sphere, and providing varied skill-building options. Vatsalya School formally registered as Vatsalya Shiksha Niketan uses unique and innovative ways to educate children. “Smart Classrooms” equipped with LCD projectors are used for showing educational documentaries in partnership with Bayjus to cover part of their syllabus and also for interactive learning through Skype. Learning through educational excursions and outdoor projects is another very important part of our education.

The disadvantaged children from rural Rajasthan lag behind in science because of the lack of opportunity available to them in the early school age. Hardly any school innovates to develop the scientific aptitude and scientific thinking among them. We find a lack of guidance by the teachers, faulty education systems, non-flexible approach of the educationists put the future generation behind their counterparts from urban areas. 
 We have built the science center cum science museum on the campus which is located in the remote rural areas. This science center helps children from neighboring schools and from the community to give exposure to science-related activities. The campus itself is well equipped with adopting a scientific approach using solar energy in cooking, running a bakery, power generation, water recharging, running bio-gas plants, agriculture, learning about planets, and all daily aspects of life. The child enters the campus and immediately gets exposure to scientific learning. The 28th of February is national science day and we would involve the community to visit and participate in the science-based experiments and learning. 
 It will generate interest of school-aged children towards science. The in-depth scientific thinking will help them grow and at a later age opt for science learning. We hope that every year children studying science stream will increase not only from the rural areas but also from the lower strata of the society. every year at least 10% more children from the age of 12 will opt for the science subject to make a career in the science stream.
