That is my basic philosophy,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.For rescued abandoned infants from bus stands, railway stations, roadsides and temple steps and orphans adopting whose parents have died, Sharanalayam has been a loving home for close to two decades. Vanitha has also been taking care of abandoned HIV-infected and mentally challenged kids. Today, over 80 abandoned kids are given shelter, food, medical care, education and other amenities at Sharanalayam.Vanitha has tried her best to run Sharanalayam from her own resources and that of her well-wishers, but the last two years have been harsh. “I have never extended my hands asking people to donate, but I have to do it now for the sake of the children under my care,” says Vanitha. It had seven children. The first child to be brought to Sharanalayam was a baby of four, who was mentally challenged, and her mother chained the daughter when she went out to work.When Vanitha came to know about this child, she went to inquire and saw that the baby was in a horrible state. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many have become professionals in various fields, including medical care, engineering, counselling, banking, etc.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of 80 children under its care. Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Our work with the nomadic communities involves continuous travelling across Gujarat. At some point we have been witness to the changing landscape across the country side. In the arid regions there are thousands of acres of barren land waiting to be covered in green once again. With the objective to increase the green cover of the water starved and drought prone regions, VSSM has initiated Tree Plantation Drive in Banaskantha district.  
 We started this campaign as we felt that the water crisis in Banaskantha is worsening with each passing day. The people have been extracting water from the underground and that has caused the depletion of underground water levels. The organization has been desilting lakes in order to increase water percolation. At the same time, trees bring rain as well as it can be home to many vulnerable fauna.In each village selected for plantation drive, Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch (VSSM) along with the people of the village, selects a tree loving, caring and compassionate individual to look after the planted trees. It is this individual’s responsibility to water the trees, dig small trenches around the tree to catch water, ensure they are provided home remedies to fight disease and so forth. The remuneration to these individuals is paid from the contribution received from VSSM’s well-wishers. It is our understanding that if the appointed person is paid well, he/she would be committed towards his responsibilities and the trees will remain well looked after. The tree caretaker is supposed to make efforts towards getting the land cleared, digging the pits, planting the saplings, giving them water in regular intervals as well as provide fertilizers to the saplings. This Tree Care Taker is paid by VSSM. We have 25 tree caretakers who have been employed by VSSM. So far, we could plant 34,626 saplings in the last two years. 
 We could plant 34,626 trees so far since 2019.We are targeting to plant 1 lakh trees in 2021.

A Small Step towards Green Earth - TREE PLANTATION CAMPAIGN

Nomadic and De-Notified Communities (NT-DNT) have always been ignored by society and government authorities. They have lost their traditional occupation due to the advancement of time as well as industrialization. These families, due to constant migration could never stay at any one place neither were accepted in the village. They do not have any constructed houses so far. These people could not obtain any kind of citizenry documents nor any stable income. It should be noted that there is no population made for these communities. Thus, these communities and their issues have to be addressed urgently. At the same time, with rampant depletion of the environment, VSSM has been working towards lake desilting to raise the underground water level as well as plant trees as part of environment conservation. 
 VSSM has been working towards the welfare of the NT-DNT communities. we work towards helping them get citizenry documents such as voter ID cards, Ration Card, Aadhar Card, and so on. We make efforts towards getting them a pucca house on the land that was provided by the government. For the regeneration of livelihood, the organization provides them the interest-free loans and teach them financial planning. VSSM also helps the communities to build their pucca houses. We also run two hostels for the education of nomadic children. VSSM aims to do holistic development of NT-DNT communities. In order to mitigate the dire water crisis in the Northern Region of Gujarat, VSSM has been desilting lakes as well as planting trees in the aridest regions of Banaskantha. 
 Helped 1020 families could get for residential plots, more than 1,00,000 individuals got Voters ID cards, 10,000 got families Ration Cards with the help of VSSM. Around 3200 individuals/ families could regenerate their livelihoods with the interest-free loans, around 938 families got pucca houses and 225 children from NT-DNT Communities get an education while staying in two hostels run by VSSM. VSSM could desilt 115 lakes and plant around 50,000 trees in the aridest regions of Banaskantha.
