Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Infant India runs a home called Anandgram that cares for 60 HIV-positive orphaned children from underprivileged backgrounds. Through no fault of their own, these orphans contracted HIV, a serious disease. Without parents or guardians, these children have no access to medicines, doctors and the HIV treatments needed to stay alive. Infant India is an NGO that takes in these orphans and provides them with a home, nutritious food, medication and education for the rest of their childhoods and sets them on a path to have better and healthier futures. HIV-positive orphaned children face harsh discrimination and are outcast and shunned by relatives, neighbours, schools and society as a whole. The NGO has even come across children who have been forcibly thrown out of their schools, once it is discovered that they are HIV-positive. But these children suffer from more than the lack of medication or even access to education. By focusing on holistic and long term care, the NGO provides all that a child needs. Infant India’s safe and loving shelter, food and medical care tends to the children’s basic needs and keeps them safe and well fed and gives them the vital medication their bodies require to fight the disease. The NGO also provides education and skills training to give the children a future in which they can be self-sufficient, financially independent and live dignified lives. But the NGO does not want the children to spend their lives alone, after having been abandoned at such young ages. So when the children become adults, the NGO arranges marriages with suitable partners, something that would be difficult to do on their own. Because of this thoughtful care, these marriages have resulted in the births of around 34 babies who are HIV-free. Each of these children contracted the virus through mother-to-child transmission. In a few weeks Datta Bargaje learned that the mother died, leaving the child orphaned. Without care or guardians, this HIV-positive child was doomed to discrimination and death. One evening in September 2018, Nethra’s alcoholic husband doused her in kerosene, set her on fire, locked the door from outside, and walked away. Hearing her wails, neighbours came to Nethra’s rescue and took her to a government hospital. Despite third-degree burns, Nethra survived after months in the hospital. But she became almost immobile. She could hardly move her hands or head as her chin was almost fused to the neck. She survived on liquid and semi-solid food as she couldn’t chew or close her mouth. “My face was so severely disfigured that my mother hid all the mirrors at home so that I would not see myself,” recalls Nethra. As the low-income family couldn’t afford proper after-care or reconstructive surgeries, Nethra was getting suicidal when Agni Raksha, a Bangalore-based NGO came to her rescue. After multiple surgeries at the NGO’s ‘Safe Haven,’ its critical care unit, Nethra is back on her feet. She is trained in tailoring and now works odd jobs and takes care of her two children.Like Nethra, most burn victims who come to Agni Raksha belong to low-income families and almost 95% of them are women. While some are victims of severe forms of domestic violence by husbands, others try to commit suicide by immolating themselves because of constant harassment. But due to the pandemic and lack of funds, Agni Raksha run by Dr Prema Dhanraj, a burn victim herself, had to shut its free critical surgeries unit. It has been a huge blow to burn victims from low-income families. We have the building, beds and other facilities, but we don’t have funds to pay doctors and support staff or buy critical care equipment and medicines. I feel very bad for victims who require emergency treatment, reconstructive surgery and post-operative care. The most heartbreaking thing for me is when some burn victims are brought here first thinking that we still run Safe Haven,” says Dr Prema.Help Dr Prema reopen Safe Haven and start providing critical care and carry out surgeries on burn victims. Our work with the nomadic communities involves continuous travelling across Gujarat. At some point we have been witness to the changing landscape across the country side. In the arid regions there are thousands of acres of barren land waiting to be covered in green once again. With the objective to increase the green cover of the water starved and drought prone regions, VSSM has initiated Tree Plantation Drive in Banaskantha district.  
 We started this campaign as we felt that the water crisis in Banaskantha is worsening with each passing day. The people have been extracting water from the underground and that has caused the depletion of underground water levels. The organization has been desilting lakes in order to increase water percolation. At the same time, trees bring rain as well as it can be home to many vulnerable fauna.In each village selected for plantation drive, Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch (VSSM) along with the people of the village, selects a tree loving, caring and compassionate individual to look after the planted trees. It is this individual’s responsibility to water the trees, dig small trenches around the tree to catch water, ensure they are provided home remedies to fight disease and so forth. The remuneration to these individuals is paid from the contribution received from VSSM’s well-wishers. It is our understanding that if the appointed person is paid well, he/she would be committed towards his responsibilities and the trees will remain well looked after. The tree caretaker is supposed to make efforts towards getting the land cleared, digging the pits, planting the saplings, giving them water in regular intervals as well as provide fertilizers to the saplings. This Tree Care Taker is paid by VSSM. We have 25 tree caretakers who have been employed by VSSM. So far, we could plant 34,626 saplings in the last two years. 
 We could plant 34,626 trees so far since 2019.We are targeting to plant 1 lakh trees in 2021.

A Small Step towards Green Earth - TREE PLANTATION CAMPAIGN

Nomadic and De-Notified Communities (NT-DNT) have always been ignored by society and government authorities. They have lost their traditional occupation due to the advancement of time as well as industrialization. These families, due to constant migration could never stay at any one place neither were accepted in the village. They do not have any constructed houses so far. These people could not obtain any kind of citizenry documents nor any stable income. It should be noted that there is no population made for these communities. Thus, these communities and their issues have to be addressed urgently. At the same time, with rampant depletion of the environment, VSSM has been working towards lake desilting to raise the underground water level as well as plant trees as part of environment conservation. 
 VSSM has been working towards the welfare of the NT-DNT communities. we work towards helping them get citizenry documents such as voter ID cards, Ration Card, Aadhar Card, and so on. We make efforts towards getting them a pucca house on the land that was provided by the government. For the regeneration of livelihood, the organization provides them the interest-free loans and teach them financial planning. VSSM also helps the communities to build their pucca houses. We also run two hostels for the education of nomadic children. VSSM aims to do holistic development of NT-DNT communities. In order to mitigate the dire water crisis in the Northern Region of Gujarat, VSSM has been desilting lakes as well as planting trees in the aridest regions of Banaskantha. 
 Helped 1020 families could get for residential plots, more than 1,00,000 individuals got Voters ID cards, 10,000 got families Ration Cards with the help of VSSM. Around 3200 individuals/ families could regenerate their livelihoods with the interest-free loans, around 938 families got pucca houses and 225 children from NT-DNT Communities get an education while staying in two hostels run by VSSM. VSSM could desilt 115 lakes and plant around 50,000 trees in the aridest regions of Banaskantha.
