For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Elementary Education: A lot of ground to coverToday over 98% of children enjoy schools situated within a kilometre of their habitation, and almost 92% have access to an upper primary school within 3 kilometers. The Mid Day Meal program, the largest of its kind in the world, provides nutritious meals to children and assists in keeping them in school. We still face many deficits in the field of education, including lack of trained teachers, physical infrastructure and low level of quality. Higher education too faces low enrolment ratios and regional disparities. Research indicates that learning outcomes in government schools in India are well below acceptable standards. VIDYA interventions and learning model helps such vulnerable students in communities by meeting their aspirations in education. Every child in Bal Vihar is a success story and is prepared in each grade by the program support to get admissions in the best of the Delhi-NCR schools to fulfil their dreams. VIDYA ensures the level-based curriculum that includes performing arts and life skill training to all students at an early age. The emphasis is shifting from having a roof over walls to making available enough free learning aids for the beneficiary children.The future always remains unseen, but whatever the future unfurls, one factor that will remain constant will be the significance of sound education based on knowledge and values. This epitomizes the philosophy of schooling at VIDYA Bal Vihar. The educational experience at Bal Vihar is challenging, exhilarating, and sometimes even euphoric. Based on the perception that every child is unique, Bal Bihar provides a conducive, enabling educational environment based on a curriculum designed to accommodate different learning styles nurtured in the ambit of multiple intelligences. The entire educational ecosystem has been reimagined and redesigned to foster a love for learning for the sake of learning. Though the Right to Education Act (RTE) was implemented in 2009, enforcing free and compulsory education for all children between 6-14 years, the act has been less than successful in providing good quality, holistic education, especially in government schools. Problems such as lack of basic resources, facilities, teacher shortages, demotivated faculty and rote learning pedagogies have resulted in extremely poor learning outcomes.Children from underprivileged backgrounds can only afford government schooling. Demographic indicators like low female literacy and an abysmally poor women's labour and workforce participation rate, coupled with a high infant mortality rate have made one of the richest states in the country ironically grapple with economic and social issues.An accelerated decline in the sex ratio and an even lower child sex ratio heavily skewed in favour of men according to the World Bank Report 2017 is an even more disturbing factor. Alcoholism, substance abuse, and domestic violence are gnawing at the society in Haryana.

COVID-19 is devastating for everyone. But the worst affected are those who were already severely disadvantaged to begin with. In most countries around the globe, the pandemic has exacerbated vulnerabilities for traditionally excluded groups, such as youth, women, and migrants. During the pre-covid times, only 32% of the population had health insurance, while now, this percentage is 55%. The data shows that COVID-19 has increased consciousness about the importance of preventive health insurance in India. Unfortunately, the most underprivileged communities cannot afford it, forcing them to dip into their savings, borrow, delay treatment or receive poor quality care. Since the 2000s, India has made remarkable progress in reducing absolute poverty. Between 2011 and 2015, more than 90 million people were lifted out of extreme poverty. Unfortunately, multiple studies have been warning that the pandemic-induced economic crisis would have a cataclysmic impact on the poor globally and be particularly severe in India - home to the maximum number of poor – sending 40 million back into poverty (IMF). <ul><li>There have been 3,20,77,706 confirmed cases of COVID-19 all over India, including 4,29,669 deaths.</li><li>Today, 8.5% of the population is fully vaccinated and 30% has received at least 1 dose.</li></ul> 
 The situation reminds us of how helpless we can be before certain phenomena. The families had suddenly lost their livelihood and in their desperation, they reached out to us for help. We quickly reorganized our activities to face the emergency. Beyond the humanitarian aid such as distribution of dry ration and PPE kits, we have also raised awareness about the virus and the safety precautions one must take to safeguard oneself and their families. Early last year, COVID-19 threw our plans off gear, albeit for a short while. VIDYA’s team's pan India was galvanized to integrate technological tools in the teaching-learning process. In a short span of time, the classroom interactions were digitized, and e-learning platforms were introduced to ensure continuity of learning. We ensured that our children do not drop out, remain physically and mentally healthy, maintain a positive outlook and emerge stronger from the crisis
